I'm scared that it'll make me miscarriage, but my doctor says it's fine. Would be very reassured to hear from anyone who flew at roughly this stage of pregnancy - with positive or negative impact.
I'm only flying short-haul to Italy, probably a two hour flight.

Thank you in advance

I did - to Greece - and it was fine. I was very uncomfortable as I was at that bloated stage, but no problems otherwise.

kitstwins · 14/02/2008 10:34

I flew to Cyprus at just over seven weeks pregnant (and then back when I was just over 9) and I was pregnant with twins. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Just drink lashings of water and make sure you move about as much as you can.

I flew to India & back at 6 and 9 weeks pregnant(10 hr flight). I was fine - drank lots of water, wore compression stockings and walked around alot. While there I also took a short 1 hr flight, I was 7 weeks then.
It's a personal thing, but wasn't a worry for me at all.

Haylstones · 14/02/2008 10:38

I flew to france when about 8 weeks pg with dd 4 years ago and it was fine (actually had 2 flights there and back as changed at Stansted). Biggest PITA for me was when boarding the plane I realised I was desperate for the toilet and I couldn't use it until the seat belt signs had been switched off. I was almost in tears but they wouldn't relent. Other than that I had no problems- just advise you to use the loo before you leave the departure lounge!

CatIsSleepy · 14/02/2008 10:40

i flew to indonesia when I was around 8 weeks-it was fine in so far as a long-haul flight in economy class is ever fine!
don't think mc is a risk at all (and I had an mc with my first pg so wouldn't have taken the risk if there had been any)
think i was lucky as I didn't have bad morning sickness
take plenty of water and little snacks

Jane7 · 14/02/2008 10:46

oh, thank you, thank you. this is all so encouraging. i feel much happier about it already.

I was on holidays in the US/Canada when I found out I was pregnant. So I would have been about 7 weeks pregnant when I flew home.... no problems with the flight though morning sickness seemed to kick in as soon as I found out I was pregnant so I didn't really enjoy the holiday as much as I should have...

doggiesayswoof · 14/02/2008 10:58

I've not heard of any risk. I flew at just over 4 weeks - I'd only just found out I was pg - and then again at 11 weeks.

(I've also flown another couple of times since and I'm 26 weeks now)

Just make sure you drink water, wear flight socks and move around a bit. And as someone else said - plan your toilet visits!

florenceuk · 14/02/2008 11:00

I flew to Venice - not a problem - apart from queuing for the loo.

Onlyaphase · 14/02/2008 11:02

I flew to Maldives when 7 weeks pregnant and back when 9 weeks. Made sure I drank lots more water than normal, wore those lovely flight socks, did lots of leg and ankle bending and walked around a few times. No problems.

nicand2 · 14/02/2008 11:02

Yes flew to Dublin just before I found out I was pregnant so around the same time and then to Portugal when I was a bit further on, didn't give it much thought really just trying to cram in the holidays before lo arrived! Make the most of your holiday while you can!!!

violeta · 14/02/2008 11:05

Yes, found out I was pregnant in Spain and flew back around 6 weeks or so - thankfully before the morning sickness kicked in!
Enjoy the trip!

TigerFeet · 14/02/2008 11:07

I flew to Amsterdam and back at about 7-8 weeks.

It was fine. I felt really ill though, but did anyway so no difference caused by the flying I think.

lollipopmother · 14/02/2008 11:07

I went to Barcelona at about 7 weeks and it was brilliant, haven't had a miscarriage yet, got back in the beginning of Feb. It actually did me the world of good because it took my mind off of pregnancy, which was really winding me up, I couldn't think of anything apart from all the things I shouldn't have eaten and what I shouldn't have had to drink before I knew I was pregnant. I came back from holiday with a fresh mind and was much better for it. I'm now going to Egypt when I'm approx 16 weeks, absolutely bricking it as I'm sure I'm going to get food poisoning, but my mother has forced me in to going and I'm too much of a sap to say no.

MrsMattie · 14/02/2008 11:07

Flew to Portugal at 6-7 weeks. No problems.

AllBuggiedOut · 14/02/2008 11:13

Flew to Australia at 7 weeks, back at around 11. No problems. Agree with others to wear flight socks, drink plenty of water and have snacks with you, especially if you're feeling at all sick.

castille · 14/02/2008 11:14

Me too, short flight at 8 weeks. No problems, just found travelling v tiring!

Moomin · 14/02/2008 11:18

I flew to New York at 8 weeks. Threw up like a good'un as we came into Newark but apart from that, no worries at all. Return flight was only 5 days later too. Only thing I'd say is take plenty of your own food that you know you like to nibble throughout flight - the airplane food tasted just minging to me though I was really hungry.

Heated · 14/02/2008 11:22

I flew back from the US (not knowing I was pg) and had taken travel sickness pills so was a bit worried, especially given I'd taken part in some extreme sports and been to a theme park and been on all those rides that say not to go on if pg! I realised then that babies can be pretty resilient. And thanks to a dodgy business lunch whilst pg, babe then managed to get through severe bout of food poisoning at 18 weeks. I do believe in what's meant to be, and from what I subsequently read, flying is ok but you might feel a bit queasier than normal.

digitalgirl · 14/02/2008 12:51

Flew to Mauritius, 12 hour flight, at 5 weeks then flew back at 7 weeks. Had a scan before and after and everything was fine (despite spotting the entire time i was there). The doctor at the EPU said that flying would not harm the baby in the first trimester, it is after week 30 that the change in air pressure can sometimes be problematic.

Buy a bottle of water after you pass security, bring your own snacks to nibble on, wear layers so you can strip off or pile 'em on if you get too hot or cold.

If you suffer travel sickness you can buy acupressure bands from boots.

Ask for an aisle seat so it's easy for you to go to the loo.

Oh, and enjoy Italy!

whinegums · 14/02/2008 13:42

Flew to France at about 7 weeks, didn't know I was pregnant. Ate all of the goregous French food (and drank the wine) that you're not supposed to - pate, cheese, raw shellfish, etc. Oops. Didn't understand why I was quite so knackered though!

Then flew to North Africa at about 14 weeks. Got hideous stomach bug just before coming back, but flights were fine. Wore flight socks and dranks lots - I was very hot so you might want to wear layers. Agree with digitalgirl - ask for an aisle seat too, so you can get up to the loo easily, and spread out a little more. When you check in if you tell them why, they might even leave an empty seat next to you if the flight isn't full. Have a fab time!

Blu · 14/02/2008 13:44

went to NY - no problems, go along to First Class if there is a queue for the toilet.

Jojay · 14/02/2008 13:46

Flew back form honeymoon in Bali at 6 weeks - no problems at all, although I didn't actually know I was pregnant at that stage!!

PetitFilou1 · 14/02/2008 14:02

I flew at 7 and a half MONTHS pregnant! Really, don't worry about it. Just keep drinking and move about a bit.
