First nhs appointment at 10 weeks, is that too early?

I've got a nhs appointment at bang on 10 weeks post period starting. Is that not a touch too early to get the blood test done? What can I expect?

I imagine that's your booking in appointment?

BackOfTheMum5net · 04/04/2023 23:23

At your booking in appointment your midwife will ask you 101 questions about your health and probably ask for a urine sample.

I think most areas do them between 8 and 12 weeks so you are golden 😊

amummyy · 04/04/2023 23:36

It's the perfect time. They do a blood test to check many things such as your blood type, any medical concerns or infections and other things, it's also good for them to check incase you need to make any medication for any deficiencies

amummyy · 04/04/2023 23:37

*take, not make

anna2101 · 05/04/2023 08:34

I had mind at 8 weeks. Lots of questions, urine sample, blood test :)

Yourteaisgettingcold · 05/04/2023 09:20

My first appointment was just after the 8 weeks point, they're usually done between 8 and 10 I think (unless you don't realise you're pregnant till later on!).

Twoinapod · 05/04/2023 09:48

It’s fine, your booking appointment is done between 8-10 weeks, then your scan between 12-14 weeks.

Sagittarius25 · 05/04/2023 09:49

I had my first appointment at 10+2, bloods taken, lots of medical questions, carbon monoxide test, blood pressure taken. 16 week appointment was also booked in at the time.

If you want to have the combined screening test more bloods will be taken at 12 week scan.

SophiaSW1 · 05/04/2023 09:55

That's the usual timeframe

Rainbowmama2023 · 05/04/2023 09:55

Mine and the majority of my friends were at 8 weeks

Is it a booking appointment as well as the scan?

You wouldn’t usually have a scan until after the booking appointment. I didn’t have any blood tests at my booking appointment, it was over the phone, just taking lots of info. Have you had a booking appointment?

cm1255 · 05/04/2023 13:31

Depends where you are in the UK. In NI you get your booking appointment and scan on the same day.

allgoodthings84 · 05/04/2023 13:34

My booking in appointment for bloods etc was at 10 weeks and my scan was 12+4 weeks.

It's an appointment where I go to the hospital, so not over the phone. It's not named at anything. Just really early in the morning. How will they know the baby is viable?

Not sure from your posts if you mean you've definitely got a scan at 10 weeks but if this is the case please ring up and query it- I was called a day or two too early so they wouldn't scan me, I think I was 11+2 or similar. I then had a massive argument to get them to rebook me properly for screening, had to get PALs involved as it wasn't my error.

So they do get it wrong. 10 weeks is perfect for booking but if you're saying it's for your dating scan, for definite, then do phone them up and ask the question.

Does the letter give you any instructions that you would need for a scan, like drinking a pint of water, etc? If not then it's just your booking appt as others have said.

They won't. There's absolutely nothing that can be done in the first trimester anyway, other than taking the requisite supplements. But this will almost certainly be your booking in appointment, which is basically just a history taking, and a few tests if in person. Dating is most accurate between 11+1 and 13+6, so scans are always scheduled in this window.

allgoodthings84 · 05/04/2023 13:45

If it’s for the scan then my letter also told me what they would be looking at during the scan etc as well as instructions how much water to drink an hour before appointment and so on. It also said on the letter that it was for the dating scan.

If it gives no details about a scan then it’s booking in.

Cotswoldmama · 05/04/2023 13:52

You won't have a scan before 12 weeks my date were slightly off so went when I thought I was 12 weeks but was 11weeks and 2 days so I had to go back as you need to be at least 12 weeks for them to take accurate measurements. A booking app is usually at 10 weeks but as others have said can be earlier. They just ask general health questions. They'll estimate how far along you are according to your cycle dates so a scan can be booked in.

Twoinapod · 05/04/2023 14:01

northeasrer · 05/04/2023 13:21

No scan at 10 weeks correct

No, no scan at 10 weeks as it’s too early to accurately date. You’ll just have height, weight, bloods, urine sample and blood pressure done plus a lot of questions about yours and partners health. The first trimester seems really slow as there’s nothing they can do.

Hazelnuttella · 05/04/2023 14:26

They won’t know the baby is viable at that point. They are just collecting info - like your medical history and personal circumstances.

They will book you in for a scan a few weeks later probably. If you were going for a scan you would be told specifically and given instructions like attending with a full bladder etc.

northeasrer · 05/04/2023 15:05

The appointment is as via me self referring and they sent the appointment via a web link.

So it's just a booking appointment. Cool.

What info do I need to have about the father?

OP posts:
allgoodthings84 · 05/04/2023 15:21

@northeasrer the midwife asked me if the father had any medical conditions himself or if his parents did. They also asked if we were together and if everything was ok between us (they check for domestic violence). They don’t pry or ask why not together etc if you’re not. They just ask to make sure you’re ok.
