Abnormalities on 6 week scan :(

Dan521 · 23/03/2023 20:19

According to my LMP I should be 6 week today. I have done 4 pregnancy tests (including one today) and all are positive. I had a private scan today and the scan/report findings are are follows…

seen within the endometrial cavity as spherical cystic structure measuring 5.2mm in diameter. Adjacent to this, an irregular shaped structure see, which is suspicious of sub-chorionic haematoma.

she did not mention seeing a gestational sac etc.

i have had no pain or bleeding etc. The Sonographer tried to refer me to the EPAU but was told I’d need a GP referral as I am not bleeding, which will likely take some time. It looked like there was two black sacks on the screen, I asked why there is two, she said she thinks it is one and collapsing down the middle to look like two.

This wait is going to kill me. Has any one experienced anything like this? What does it mean and what was the outcome? I done a clear blue test over a week ago which said 2-3 weeks.

@Dan521 The departments are normally called Trophoblastic Disease Centre/Service something like that so you can Google and find the direct number

Dan521 · 14/05/2023 21:28

@MLN89 that’s a really good idea, thank you. I’m still waiting to hear back from the second testing of the tissue. I am not sure what they’re testing for when they’ve already diagnosed. I think the tissue has been sent to Sheffield to be tested that’s probably where I’ll be referred to as it’s closest. Do you know what the department is called? I can call the switch board tomorrow and ask to be put through.

Hey,

I've no idea what they're waiting for either. As soon as they confirmed a molar pregnancy they should have referred you to Sheffield. They need to check your HCG asap so they really should have gotten it sorted by now.

Google Sheffield Trophoblastic Centre, it's located at Weston Park Hospital and hopefully that'll get you the number.

100% call them today and tell them everything that's happened and say you've not heard anything about your referral and they'll likely chase it up. As soon as they got involved with me everything got sorted and my monitoring started really quickly.

The fact you've had a negative test is really positive but home pregnancy tests are not sensitive enough to ensure all is well. It's about 3 and a half years ago for me but at the time it was urine samples every 2 weeks to ensure levels were dropping then when you get to a certain point the urine isn't accurate enough so you switch to blood tests every 2 weeks till you get to zero.

If you've had a complete molar they're slightly riskier than the partials so it's really important you start monitoring.

Dan521 · 15/05/2023 10:07

@mln89 I’ve just called them, they’ve received my referral and the results from the second test are back but the lady on the phone said she couldn’t discuss with me so she’s passing on a message to one of the nurses to call me back.

Ahh that's good news. Yeah the girls on reception can't tell you anything but the nurses are amazing and usually call back pretty quickly.

AnotherStory23 · 15/05/2023 11:03

@Dan521 Excellent news. The nurses who work in this area are amazing so they'll be able to help and advise

Dan521 · 11/04/2024 01:55

Hey everyone, OP here. I have come back with an update. After the original hospital testing the tissue after the d&c they confirmed a complete molar pregnancy. They then referred me to the specialist clinic in Sheffield and sent the tissue to be retested. Over a month later I received a letter in the post telling me the second test confirmed it was not a molar, so no further monitoring was required. I've since had my doubts about the second result because I cannot understand how one place can be so certain and also confirm which type of molar. Apparently if you conceive within a year of a molar pregnancy there's a high chance it could happen again.

A year on... I have been ttc ever since but got no where, was about to start IVF. The most recent cycle I give clomid a try as a last ditch attempt. I had follicle tracking scan which confirmed 14mm dominant follicle, a 10mm follicle and some smaller (below 7mm), according to bbt I ovulated 3 days later on cd15. I was gobsmacked when I got a bfp on a digital at 8dpo (pretty much a year to the day from when I miscarried.)

Of course my nerves have been gone so I went to the hospital to get checked. HCG at 13dpo was 240, 15dpo was 695 I haven't had hcg tested since but 17dpo I had 3+ on cb digital so it must have been above the 2800 threshold or above at that point. It has almost trippled and above the normal range.

I've searched what could cause this the three main reasons are twins, molar or downsyndrome. I doubt that 10mm egg would have had enough time to grow big enough to be fertilised and I had a scan at 4w6d, although it was too early to see much it did show 1 sac so I've ruled out twins.

I think the most likely outcome is a molar and it makes me wonder if last year was a molar and I've been high risk of it happening again. I know a few people on this thread commented saying they'd had molars, can I ask what your hcg levels were?

I was looking back at this thread to see what mine were and they were rising but not doubling. I have another scan on 18th April, I will be 6w2d at that point so I am hoping to see a heartbeat. My previous scan showed things appeared to be in the right place but it was too early to confirm a viable pregnancy. Last year I had zero symptoms, this time I have really sore boobs but that's about it.

CadyEastman · 11/04/2024 18:44

I had a partial. Can't remember what my levels were. The Hospital were pretty reluctant to talk to me about anything but when I googled it was pretty obvious what was going on.

Try and keep to fact based websites and looks after yourself OP Flowers

AnotherStory23 · 11/04/2024 21:15

@Dan521 Hi there, I'm so sorry you've had all this confusion about this. I'm surprised they could give you the diagnosis and go back on it. This all sounds really rough.

I'm not sure that it's true that if you have a molar you are more likely to have another one in the first year. As far as I've read it seems if you have a complete molar it's more likely you'll have another generally, but even then it's still a very small possibility. Not sure about partial molars as the issue there is different (two sperm who may have had faulty functioning which effects the egg sealing). The worry about getting pregnant again too quickly is that the molar tissue could grow back if it hasn't all been removed. I had a complete molar pregnancy which was removed in May 2022; I went on to get pregnant with my son in December 2022 (more quickly than advised but after my levels had returned to normal) and had him in August 2023. I was given extra scans quite quickly at six and nine weeks. I understand you are worried but as far I as I know some people just have higher HCG levels. I know it's tricky but just wait for the next scan - try to keep yourself occupied with lots of nice things. Before my two early scans I was convinced it was another molar and was dreading them; each time I saw the baby I felt a little more reassured. Pregnancy after loss is hard enough, pregnancy after a molar is its own particular kind of scary. I will be thinking of you, and I hope everything is okay for you at your next scan.

Dan521 · 13/04/2024 15:57

That makes sense, I think I've got mixed up. I just remember them telling me how important is was not to conceive within a year and I've took it as there is a risk of it happening again. I wasn't monitored but I have been ttc ever since and done millions of pregnancy tests in that time which were negative so I don't think anything has grew back.

I had the early scan at the epu that diagnosed a molar so they are wanting to mentor until the pregnancy is confirmed as viable. I am booked in with them for another scan next week's but I just can't rest, my nerves are gone so I have booked a private scan for tomorrow. I don't even know why because I know its probably still too early but I feel better for doing it. After everything that's happened I just want reassurance and to be able to be excited over the pregnancy. The wait is mental torture.

Holy shit OP...I've just read all the PPs, what a journey you've had. Congratulations on your twins, you must be beyond excited. Very best wishes to you all.

Dan521 · 14/04/2024 21:47

Thank you every one, I wasn't even expecting to see a heartbeat so early, never mind two! It's still early days but every thing looks on track so far. I'm still in shock. We have the epu scan booked for Thursday still.

Oh wow didn't realise this was an older thread when I opened it and I'm so delighted for you!

YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna · 14/04/2024 22:21

Amazing news. I had a molar pregnancy Sept 2021 and had d&c with a very late diagnosis of molar. So late that I was, in fact, pregnant again with twins! A roller coaster of a time but now I have 2 healthy 19m old identical girls. All the best to you and for the pregnancy.

Dinnerlady12 · 14/04/2024 22:50

Wow congratulations! I started reading this thinking it was a recent thread was only when I got to the post from April 1st I got confused as April 1st was a Monday that I realised it was from last year 😂. Sorry for what you went through last year it sounds like a really difficult time its no wonder you are worried and booked a private scan. What an amazing update so happy for a stranger whose story I just came across 5 minutes ago! Hope you have a smooth and healthy pregnancy.

Dan521 · 24/04/2024 16:43

I'm back with another update. Unfortunately the pregnancy ended in miscarriage and I've been in for another d&c 😔. There ended up being only one baby and the heart had stopped just before 7 weeks.
