Abnormalities on 6 week scan :(

According to my LMP I should be 6 week today. I have done 4 pregnancy tests (including one today) and all are positive. I had a private scan today and the scan/report findings are are follows…

seen within the endometrial cavity as spherical cystic structure measuring 5.2mm in diameter. Adjacent to this, an irregular shaped structure see, which is suspicious of sub-chorionic haematoma.

she did not mention seeing a gestational sac etc.

i have had no pain or bleeding etc. The Sonographer tried to refer me to the EPAU but was told I’d need a GP referral as I am not bleeding, which will likely take some time. It looked like there was two black sacks on the screen, I asked why there is two, she said she thinks it is one and collapsing down the middle to look like two.

This wait is going to kill me. Has any one experienced anything like this? What does it mean and what was the outcome? I done a clear blue test over a week ago which said 2-3 weeks.

I’m booked in for a d&c on Tuesday. I started spotting 2 days ago and it’s been on and off since. It seems to have gotten a bit heavier now but not as much as a period. Does any one know when the pregnancy is likely to pass?

Just giving an update incase any one in the future is having a similar experience. I started spotting a week ago, I expected the miscarriage to happen naturally because I had started bleeding. The bleeding eventually got heavier over the past week but it did not pass naturally. I was booked in for a d&c today any way, I just expected it to have happened on its own by now. The d&c went as well as can be minus some really
embarrassing things I said while coming around from the anaesthetic 🙈. I’m glad it is finally over, it has been a rough few weeks. I am currently bleeding quite heavily, going to go to bed and hope the bleeding doesn’t last too long so I can finally move on from this. I had a coil fitted during the procedure to prevent having to go through this again.

Sending love and hugs. Take it easy, maybe hot water bottle, blanket and lots of chocolate xx

Sorry to read this thread and all you've been through - thanks for keeping us updated and so sorry for you - take care of yourself xx

Dan521 · 02/05/2023 19:40

I’m just back to update this post incase someone in the future is having the same experience. @MLN89 turns put you were right, I’ve recently had a call from the hospital. The tissue is sent off after the d&c for testing, they wouldn’t tell me much over the phone and said I need to go in to discuss the results but mentioned a molar pregnancy. The tissue has been sent off for further testing so I am awaiting those results before I go in to find out exactly what they found.

@Dan521 I'm really sorry to hear this. I also had a molar pregnancy last year and so know the waiting can be very tough. I hope you manage to find things to put your mind at ease during the time it takes them to get back to you. Did they say how long they are expecting it to take? Unfortunately for me I had to wait for a month until I heard back, but they were pretty certain that it was a molar from the outset. Please drop me a message if you have any questions.

Dan521 · 02/05/2023 20:05

@AnotherStory23 thank you! She was reluctant to tell me anything on the phone, I think I’ll phone back tomorrow and ask further questions. I don’t know any details over than it’s a molar. It don’t know if it is partial or complete or what treatment I will need. I didn’t bleed very long after the D&C maybe a week or so. I haven’t had any sort of symptoms but I haven’t had a AF since or done a pregnancy test (I will do one tomorrow) so I am not sure if there could be any tissue remaining or not or if I’ll need any further treatment. She said the first test is standard procedure to diagnose abnormalities and the second test is more thorough. I’m awaiting the results of the second test she said it may take a couple of weeks and I will need to go in to discuss the results within a month. I’ve been advised not to get pregnant again in the meantime, which isn’t an issue because I had the coil fitted during the D&C.

My worst fear at this point is needing chemo, did you have to have chemo? I did ask during the ultrasound if it could be a molar pregnancy because she mentioned there being cysts in my uterus but the sonographer brushed it off and said molars are very rare.

my partner and myself both already have healthy kids to other people. This would have been our first together. I am wondering if we are genetically incompatible.

AnotherStory23 · 02/05/2023 20:19

@Dan521 Ah okay. Hopefully the results come quickly for you. Yes, they suggested I come in to discuss my results too, though by that point I had read so much about it, I basically knew more than the doctor!

I know, the possibility of chemo seems very scary but I didn't have to have it for which I'm extremely grateful. I had a complete molar and my HCG levels were very high (over 100,000 at the time of my op) but luckily they came down very quickly and I got my period back 6 weeks later. It did take me just over three months for my bloods to be back to completely normal though and I was still showing as pregnant on tests a lot of that time - I did quite a few tests but I really would say that they were more anxious-making than helpful. But I think more often than not women won't have to have further treatment for a molar once it's been removed - and I found each period I had really helped my levels come down further.

I don't think molars are anything to do with genetic incompatibility or anything like that - from what I've read they are just really really horrible bad luck. If it helps (I don't know if you were planning on more children later) I am currently 24 weeks pregnant.

My heart really goes out to you - I know how tough this is. I remember thinking a lot 'first a miscarriage, and now this??' It really sucks. Sending you lots of strength.

Dan521 · 02/05/2023 21:43

@AnotherStory23 that’s what I’ve felt like finding this out, thought it was finally over and then this. We won’t be trying to conceive anytime soon so at least I don’t have the stress of itching to try again. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

OP posts:
SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 02/05/2023 21:46

I've had a partial molar and didn't need chemo. In fact my levels went down very quickly.

I hope it's the same for you Flowers

Dan521 · 03/05/2023 14:04

I’ve done a pregnancy test today which was negative so that is a good sign. I’ve called the hospital back for more info they’ve confirmed that it is a complete molar.

OP posts:
AnotherStory23 · 03/05/2023 14:36

@Dan521 Glad you've had some clarification, but I'm sorry to hear that. But that's excellent about the test! Hopefully because you had the op fairly early this will mean your HCG will be back to normal much more quickly than me (I was 11 weeks by the time I had the molar removed).

Just saw the update and so sorry you're going through this!

Like you no one mentioned molar to me until after my D&C. They noted that the tissue was abnormal looking when they did the procedure and sent it off for testing but no one said anything to me. First I knew about it was when I got a letter in the post with a leaflet explaining and an appointment with a consultant. By the time I got to the appointment the consultant was busy and sent his junior and she was absolutely clueless and told me I'd need chemo. I was pretty certain mine was a PMP as we'd seen a heartbeat and knew that she was being waaaay over the top so kicked off and asked to see the consultant. He apologised profusely and said I wouldn't need chemo necessarily but that molars are so rare they're always treated by one of two specialist centres in england. I was treated by Sheffield (you don't have to actually go there, it's all phone/post)

It took about 6 months for my levels to return to normal but I never needed any chemo.

I now have a happy, healthy 2 year old so I don't think it's anything to do with incompatibility, it's sheer bad luck. Basically all women/men will have some eggs/sperm that aren't perfect. It's like any cell in your body, they won't all work correctly. The odds of that egg/sperm meeting, fertilising and implanting are super rare which is why molar pregnancies are so rare. But it could happen to anyone. You just won a particularly shitty lottery.

I joined a support group on Facebook and I found it super helpful!

The fact you've had a negative pregnancy test is great. Mine didn't go negative for about 4 months and then another 2 to get to 0 on my blood tests. Fingers crossed this is over for you quickly!

But don't let it put you off if you do want another. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you or your partner ❤️

Dan521 · 13/05/2023 07:59

@MLN89 thank you for getting back to me that information was really useful. I’m currently having my first period since it all happened (I stopped bleeding within a week after the procedure) and it’s not my usual period. i usually start quite heavy then it becomes less over the following 3-4 days then stops. This current period has gone from spotting to really heavy to spotting again then back to heavy. I’m currently on day 3. I went to the toilet earlier and there was that much it had dripped down the side of the toilet. I’m not sure if this is normal because it’s the first one, because of the coil or if it is a sign that something isn’t right. I’ve also since read that you shouldn’t have a coil fitted after a molar because it can rupture your uterus 😭. Obviously at the time of having it fitted no one knew it was a molar.

OP posts:
AnotherStory23 · 13/05/2023 17:32

@Dan521 Try not to panic. Are you going to call your EPU or doctor? The first period I had after my operation did get increasingly heavy, and was extremely heavy on day 4 which was a bit shocking. It stopped immediately after though. I also do remember that when I got my coil in I bleed on and off for ages, so it might just be a double whammy for your poor body! Has it got better as the day's gone on?

Dan521 · 13/05/2023 17:43

@AnotherStory23 its been off and on again today. It’s seems to be spotting and then quite a big gush and then spotting again. I’ve had this type of coil before and it made my periods lighter. When the gush happens I’m sitting on the toilet and it’s dripping like a tap.

OP posts:
AnotherStory23 · 14/05/2023 08:30

@Dan521 I'm sure it will be okay. Also, I remember the molar clinic I was referred to told me that bleeding does happen sometime afterwards too, it's the body getting rid of the last cells. The coil does make periods lighter but in its immediate implantation it can make you bleed more. But I'm sure if you call your EPU someone will be able to advise.

Dan521 · 14/05/2023 09:00

@AnotherStory23 thank you, I did call them but it was the out of hours EPAU for emergencies. She advised to call the clinic I’ve been attending on Monday.

OP posts:
Dan521 · 14/05/2023 14:36

I’m on day 5 (my period usually lasts 3-4 days) I’ve had a tampon in for less than an hour and it’s flooded and leaking past it. I can usually leave one in over night even on my heaviest days and that doesn’t happen. 😔 I might have to have the coil removed.

OP posts:
pyjamalife · 14/05/2023 14:50

Sorry to hear what you've gone thorough! Did they mention molar or partial molar?

Dan521 · 14/05/2023 18:31

@pyjamalife they diagnosed a complete molar

AnotherStory23 · 14/05/2023 18:34

@Dan521 I'm sorry you are going through this, it all sounds very stressful for you. I really do think that the period after a miscarriage is often very different from our normal ones. Hopefully you can get some answers tomorrow - will be sending you my best

Dan521 · 14/05/2023 18:31

@pyjamalife they diagnosed a complete molar

Hey lovely,

Have you heard any more about your follow up? Depending on where you are (assuming England) you'll be looked after by Sheffield or Charing Cross.

I ask because I'd call them for advice about the coil/bleeding.

I knew I was being referred to Sheffield and managed to get their number as I had a million questions the terrible doctor I saw at my local hospital had been unable to answer. I called them before they even received my referral and they were amazing. Answered all the questions I had and even chased up my local hospital for the referral so I could get started with monitoring right away.

If you know where you're being referred I'd 100% give them a call and speak to one of the nurses for advice. I know if it's Sheffield they'll be absolutely fine for you to do that!

Dan521 · 14/05/2023 21:28

@MLN89 that’s a really good idea, thank you. I’m still waiting to hear back from the second testing of the tissue. I am not sure what they’re testing for when they’ve already diagnosed. I think the tissue has been sent to Sheffield to be tested that’s probably where I’ll be referred to as it’s closest. Do you know what the department is called? I can call the switch board tomorrow and ask to be put through.

OP posts:
pyjamalife · 14/05/2023 23:14

Sorry to hear that, I did a lot of reading when I had a suspected partial molar.

I can't remember the ins and outs of a complete but I'm wishing you all the luck in the world! X
