I’m freaking out! My sonographer said baby has Morton’s toe but neither me or my partner has it?
It says it is inherited so now I’m freaking out.
I’ve 10000% not been unfaithful what is going on?

Why would anything more complicated than you both have it as a recessive gene and then have given it both to your child.

chevvyroo · 24/01/2023 20:52

Is that when your 2nd toe is longer than your big toe? Forgive me if I am missing something but how would this be significant on a scan?

ConfusedNT · 24/01/2023 20:53

It can be both dominant and recessive so you could both be carriers

365names · 24/01/2023 20:54

My daughter has it - I don’t and neither does her Bio dad or her brother or her grandparents

however my mothers sister had it and my daughter has hyper mobility.

it is very common and hasn’t caused her any issues - her hyper mobility had but not the toes!

Honestly nothing to worry about

It was picked up on my daughters scan and yes she has hyper mobility

FlounderingFruitcake · 24/01/2023 20:55

Isn’t it polygenic? So controlled by more than one gene.

DottyLittleRainbow · 24/01/2023 20:56

You could both be carriers for this as it can be either dominant or recessive - and so then it can appear in your child.

365names · 24/01/2023 20:57

Well considering the gene is likely to have come from both of you or two recessive genes in each parents - carrying the gene - your genes have just combined together

Even if it is dominant - and there seems to be some debate, then it is probably just a one base pair mutation. That is how evolution works, the odd change here and there, some are fairly disasterous, others give a small advantage, others are neutral. Your child just happens to have a slightly different mutation, thankfully nothing too serious. If the error in copying your DNA had been elsewhere it could have a much larger impact.

Thank you all so much.
Sorry for being so stupid I was under the impression a parent had to be presenting with Morton’s toe for the child to have it 🤦🏻‍♀️
Sorry guys, been a long day.
Thanks for the explanations make complete sense.

Well what a good job she made a post about it otherwise who would you have had to make a snooty reply to?

bestbefore · 24/01/2023 21:41

@firsttimelondonmummy 😂😂

firsttimelondonmummy · 24/01/2023 21:46

@holierthanthou73 I did extensive googling and you can’t find exact genetic discussions like you can with other conditions just the fact that it is genetic.
Please feel free to be my guest and waste half an hour of your life having a google too.
Luckily most people on here are helpful and don’t mind giving advice/ reassuring others. Shame there’s still some people like you lurking around with nothing better to do than be negative.

Well, who's have thought it ? I've got this, very pronounced, but never knew it was called that. You learn something new every day !

Peckhaminn · 24/01/2023 23:37

Wait I have that too! My big toe looks like a thumb and my second toe is like a a finger lol!

Palmfrond · 24/01/2023 23:41

Why is Morton’s toe significant? And how on earth can they pick it up (definitively) on an ultrasound!?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 24/01/2023 23:43

I have it too, although the second toe isn’t very much longer. Made dancing on pointe which I was younger a bit more challenging.

FredaFox · 25/01/2023 06:22

I have this why is it an issue I'm confused?! It's never caused me an issue, Disney even realise it had a name

FredaFox · 25/01/2023 06:22

Didn't

postwarbulge · 25/01/2023 06:27

Me too! It hasn't bothered me for the last seventy-odd years

teachingbean · 25/01/2023 06:31

I have this!! Just learnt it had a name Confused

BowiesJumper · 25/01/2023 06:33

I just had to look at my feet to check but I have it too. Will have to check my parents feet to see if they do 😂
