What does your pregnancy diet consist of?

This has definately been done before but I can't remember the outcome and I'm curious. Mine has consisted of soooooooooooooooooooooooo much junk it's unreal. Masses of crisps, biscuits, cereal, gallons of milk, bananas, a little chocolate, cakes, chips chips chips etc etc.

However, I've started feeling REALLY ill the past few days and can't bring myself to eat.

I have two questions.
Firstly, at the moment, I'm living on orange juice (and last night I managed to eat a pitta with chicken in it)... is this enough? I've barely eaten for 3 days so far and I can't see me feeling any better any time soon. I'd put on a lot of weight but obviously it seems to be slowing down now because of the lack of eating and the being sick.

Also, has everyone else been eating junk? What's your daily diet like? I think we should all confess our sins on the safety of mumsnet.

Mumbles If this is your first pregnancy you will regret eating the junk when you realise how long it takes to shift the weight afterwards! I used to drink hot chocolate with cream the first time round. This time (third time) I am sticking to a healthy diet with my usual occasional treats. I am having to eat a lot more than I normally do though but little and often.

Don't worry about not being able to eat much at the moment, your body will look after the baby first and you second. Just take your pregnancy vitamins and try and nibble on whatever you can stomach/keep drinking.

How many weeks are you?

speak2deb · 05/02/2008 11:52

I had bad nausea for the first 12 weeks and lived on cereal and milk. It was the only thing I ould stomach.

Agree whole heartedly with petitfilou re: the junk food and weight. My dd is 9 months old and I'm only just starting to resemble my old self despite long daily walks and watching what I eat.

moominsmummy · 05/02/2008 11:53

i ate lots of lasagna and chocolate first time around - put on 4 stone and was devastated to discover that you don't lose all 4 stone in the delivery room

this time i had HG so lost weight but now am putting it on - biggest weakness is peanut butter and jam sandwiches (thank god they lifted the ban on peanuts!) am now 28 weeks and have put on 7lbs overall. still plenty of time left to overeat though....

Rantmum · 05/02/2008 11:55

I ate nothing but white bread and cheese and orange juice because they were the only thing I could manage through the nausea of the first 3 mths. I did regret it as petit says because even though I ate very healthily after the morning sickness subsided, the weight I gained in those early months was what I think made it so hard to shift the weight after ds was born. Next time I will force myself to eat healthily even through the morning sickness, I am quite determined.

Mumblesmummy · 05/02/2008 12:00

I'm 26+2 and I went from a size 10 to a size 12 when we were trying (because I'd lost 5 stone over 10 months so i didn't want to put any weight on. Me at size ten means me eating next to nothing). Then the only way to stop the sickness was things like bread, pasta, jacket potatoes, chips, plain crisps etc as everything else was just disgusting. Then I had an entire phase of eating just cheerios and milk and bananas. Then I had a phase of troffing anything and everything and nothing could fill me. Mega comfort eating stage!!!!

Now I'm eating nowt at all, and I'm about a 14-16 in maternity clothes. but have stabilised at this for a few weeks now so don't think I'll go any bigger. My bump is huge and solid and has stretch marks and is most definately full of baby as the midwives told me.

I am worried about my fat arms and huge boobs though.

Fortunately, I know that when i put on a lot of weight it is usually because I've been eating a lot of wheat and dairy (which I have) and I'm intollerant to both, so if I cut them out, the weight just falls off.

I have had a good few bingey days whilst pregnant though, I've got to say.

Hope there's a couple of people out there who have done the same!!!! Come and spill... don't leave me as the fat loner

mumblesmummy - you are not alone - what i omitted to say was that I never did lose 1.5 stone of the extra weight put on the first time around.......

Rantmum · 05/02/2008 12:14

Not bragging, btw, because it was too much hard work to brag about, but I did lose the weight, but it took more than a year and a half (if I had got pg again during that time then it would have been a different story).

LoveAndSqualor · 05/02/2008 12:38

Hmmn, I've been eating sensibly-ish throughout (will be 34 weeks on thurs), but have developed a sweet tooth (never had one before) and have been mainlining chocolate and carbs. Yesterday, for example: toast for breakfast, mozzarella and sundried tomato sandwich for lunch (heavy on the olive oil), Yorkie bar, jacket potato with ham and cheese, broccoli and spinach, and a caramel magnum for pudding. Have balanced this a little bit by staying reasonably fit (still cycling in and out of work - about 20 mins each way), but have def put on weight on arms and legs. Gained about 10kg so far, I think. All looks in proportion now because of the bump, but I have a feeling things will be a lot less rosy once the bump has deflated!

ThePFJ · 05/02/2008 12:59

I keep lots of fruit in the house and make myself eat 1/2 pieces everyday. I also try and eat a bowl of cereal.. rice crispies normally or drink a glass of milk daily too. My appetite sometimes goes completely for days and I have to make myself eat for the baby's sake. As for other foods, anything goes within reason. I also take pregnacare plus daily. I have put on a bit on extra weight though. I think the pure orange juice and the milk had something to do with it. But I am not huge.. just festively plump. :P

missvicki · 05/02/2008 14:07

I'm still being sick quite regularly so although i'm craving giant chocolate buttons i'm hoping it's being counteracted by the sickness!!!!

Other than that i'm finding my diet is reduced/limited, i've gone off foods (mainly because of taste or smell on sickness TMI sorry!)

catsypug · 05/02/2008 16:30

I'm a total lard arse this time round! I blame eating loads on the cold weather and having a 2 year old to look after! My diet seems to be mainly cheese and carbs - breakfast cheese and worcester sauce on toast or sugar puffs, lunch sandwich and soup - afternoon crisps, crackers with cheese and coleslaw and chocolate - dinner lasagna chips and veg or pie veg and mash - pudding and maybe another packet of crisps! I'm trying to be good with fruit but just really don't fancy it much oh and ribena is the only thing I'm really drinking other than tea. All the weight seems to be bump at the moment but I've got 4 and a half months to go !!!

littlelamb · 05/02/2008 16:39

I am guzzling orange juice like there's no tomorrow and romaine lettuce for every meal. All with a healthy dollop of chocolate (thank god I am pregnant at creme egg time!)

systemsaddict · 05/02/2008 16:40

WAY too much chocolate! Try and have healthy stuff too but am definitely adding in more sweet carbs than usual (although my 'usual' is a very controlled-carb diet which I can't do when pregnant or exclusively breastfeeding anyway). This is my second time around in 2 years and I had sworn not to do this again - put on loads of weight last time, 'all in the bump' though or so I thought, till I delivered him (OK he was 9 lbs 15 so there was a lot in the bump) and discovered there was a lot more under the bump!! Had only lost about 1/2 of it when got pg again - but sadly I'm going down the same road again. I know it's not sensible but I feel I need that sugar boost to get through the day a lot of the time, as a pregnant working mother of toddler (excuses excuses). Am being tested for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks though (since ds was so big) so all of this may have to change ....

Oh and mumblesmummy don't worry about short term food aversion, the baby will take what it needs while you're off eating.

spugs · 05/02/2008 17:43

ive eaten loads of junk with all of mine and was determined that this time (number 3) i would behave! i too remember the horror of realising that the 3 stone does not magically disapear when you have the baby. unfortunatly i have failed miserably and though my meals are very healthy i still manage to get through a couple of choccie bars a day. i know ill pay for it in a couple of months but hey its not worth worrying about. plus im starving alll of the time

slim22 · 06/02/2008 00:54

No point agonizing over weight now.

If you can reduce wheat and dairy, great. Whatever makes you feel better. Too much sugar also makes me feel queasy, I tend to nibble on dry foods such as pretzels/digestives/popcorn etc...

My tip: eat little and often so as not to overload. Oranges are good.

Just remember to eat enough protein for baby.A great protein snack is simply a big bag of assorted nuts.

Also, if you eat lots of protein you'll feel less peckish (eggs on toast great morning or lunchtime).

Blocky · 06/02/2008 12:28

With my first I ate loads - whatever I wanted and whatever I could, as much as I could. My GP was worried about me because for 3 months I didn't gain any weight! My second (12 years later) was a different story. I developed gestational diabetes and had to eat really healthily which was brilliant as I gained very little weight and felt brilliant. However, since giving birth I have gained 2 stone

I found out I was pregnant a couple of days after Xmas, I put on a stone at Xmas
and I've just carried on eating, I can't stop! I have always hated carrying weight but it's not the end of the world, we aren't meant to look like Victoria Beckham and it isn't worth getting depressed over. I find if I deny myself food I get really pi**ed off and depressed and it just isn't worth it, I'll deal with being a lard arse when it comes to it!

Mumblesmummy · 06/02/2008 17:37

Slim22- eggs on toast homonahomona... I'm off to make that another craving on it's way I imagine...

Leonie- Eeeeeeeeew I used to love curry so much but since I've been pregnant even the thought makes me queesy!

Oh well, as long as I'm not alone in my scoffing and muching. I'm STILL off my food at the mo though!

Hello! Any advice welcom. This is my first pregnancy and I'm so worried. Some days I can't eat anything at all. Other days I'm fine with bread and some fruit. But I can't eat any dinners or hot food and definitely no vergetables. Is this okay. Am I normal?!

lollipopmother · 06/02/2008 20:40

Cleo - it's quite normal to not be able to eat, but are you not eating because it's all coming back up, or because you feel so rough that you don't have an appitite?

Lots of women end up throwing up so much that the best thing for them is to go to hospital and be put on a drip, it sounds scary but it just means that your baby gets everything that it needs and that you dont' need to worry about being so sick all the time. Make sure you voice your concerns about your sickness to your midwife or doctor because you needn't suffer in silence, there is lots of help out there.

Nasreen · 06/02/2008 21:51

I think of you suffer from nausea/sickness at the begininng or all the way thorugh, eat what you can tolerate.
My nausea went at 12 weeks and i have eaten fairly sensibly until now (35 weeks - i cannot get enough of galaxy chocolate! Trying to limit the amount i eat as i don't want to gain more than i need to ...Mmmmm....it's hard tho..try to eat lots of fruit and drink plenty of water.

cleo123 · 08/02/2008 17:17

Thanks for the reassurance lollipop and nasreen. Still having good days and bad days but am managing to eat enough I guess. Only nauseous and off food- haven't been sick yet. Will continue to eat my fruit and drink lots (of water!).

Mumblesmummy · 08/02/2008 19:20

Ok tell me what you think of this for a day of the pregnancy diet (this was yesterday's intake):

  1. Banana 2)Small jacket potato with cottage cheese and pineapple 3)Chicken breast in tomato and basil with mash and buttered mix veg.

I'm either an overeater or a real diet freak- always one or the other- so I'm trying to find a happy medium to eat whilst pregnant, and really don't know if I'm eating too little, too much, just right... what does everyone think?

I'd eaten nothing for days and then had started eating like this (which is much less than I was eating) but I still seem to be putting weight on.. is this normal? (26+5)

when I was pg with dd1, after mc, I was having a fit about my diet as all I could keep down was lucozade and beans on toast
in one of my more neurotic meetings with EPU midwives I was pouring my heart out about how I couldn't manage fruit/veg etc and how it was bad for baby etc. She looked me straight in the face and told me to keep down whatever I could, the baby would take what it needed and we all had cravings for a reason!

2nd pg I managed to be more sensible with diet - mainly helped by lack of ms although terrible indigestion merited copious white toast/pineapple and milk! I only put on 19lbs second time round and dd2 was 11lb of it!
