Waters gone at 34 weeks?!

My waters went today at 34+1, been into hospital and they did a test to make sure it was fluids and it was positive. They aren't doing anything tonight but want to scan in morning and make a plan from there apparently. Lying in hospital bed googling everything now! I had threatened premature labour at 29 weeks, so have had both doses of steroids thankfully.

Anyone had this happen?! I'm wondering if they're likely to want to deliver tomorrow or not. She said she wants to do a scan because his growth has been slowing over my last two scans and she wants to make sure it's not fallen off the chart before she decides on delivery. Does that mean she'll deliver if he's too small or he'd need more time to grow? I didn't ask enough questions and now have loads!

I can't answer your questions but sending you lots of positive thoughts. My mum volunteers in NiCU and says she is constantly amazed by how well the tiny tiny babies do. Good luck x

I don’t have answers for you OP, but wanted to send you positive vibes - you’re almost at full term and looked after in hospital, all will be well 🤱

My waters went at 33+5 with my DD. They gave me steroids and a magnesium sulphate drip which was not pleasant to try and protect her lungs and brain. I ended up going into full labour naturally at 34+1. She was 4lb 10oz when she was born and needed to stay in NICU for two weeks - not for anything specific other than keeping her temperature steady. She is now almost 2 and has caught up in every way imaginable - she is really tall! It was a scary time going into labour 6 weeks early. I'm here if you want to vent or ask any questions! Sending you lots of positive thoughts xx

My waters went at 33 weeks. They kept me in hospital for two nights for monitoring then let me go home. I was booked in for a C-section (baby was breech) at 36 weeks as that was when the risk of infection due to lack of waters outweighed the benefits of being in the womb, it but at 35+5 went into labour. Baby didn't need to go to NiCU or anything like that. He stayed with me but was in an incubator for a day as he had difficulty regulating his temperature. He had a bit of jaundice which I think is common in premmies. We were discharged after 2 nights and baby is now a healthy six year old.

My ds2 was born at 34 weeks after my waters spontaneously ruptured. I think it happened about 11pm and he was born at 5pm ish the next day. I remember them giving me steroids but he was a good weight for dates at over 5 pounds.

Hey sweetie. firstly keep calm and know this: At 34 weeks your baby's long term prognosis is as good as a full term baby.

I had a similar experience. My waters broke at 33+6 but no contractions. I was terrified. I had the NICU come and talk to me and tell me all about it. Doctors told me that they'd keep me in for 72 hours and if I hadn't gone into labour naturally then they would release me and check me two-three times a week and induce me at 37 weeks. I was horrified at that and convinced my baby would get sepsis.

A family friend who is a retired obs told me that generally speaking if your waters continue to go then it's likely you will go into labour within the 72 hours if not then the week. If they go and then stop then likely it has sealed and you can wait.

They debated giving me the steroids, apparently the cut off is 34 weeks but I had such severe diabetes that they were worried they would cause my sugars to go out of control and harm the baby or me.

So we waited. my waters had broken at 7am Sunday. On Tuesday morning at 3am I started to get cramps, she arrived at 6:59am pretty much bang on 48 hours after my waters broke weighing 4lbs 11oz. They had two pediatricians in the room as they were worried she'd need resus. She came out screaming her lungs out, she fed straight away and then preceeded to wee on me. lol. They took her to the NICU and 45 mins later brought her back saying nothing wrong with her and she could stay with me on the ward.

She needed some UV for Jaudice and some IV antibiotics as she'd picked up a minor infection. But on Saturday night (Christmas) she came home.

She's just turned a year old and she is the most active, chatty and funniest one year old i know. She is tiny but she was even in utero but bar her size you would never guess she was prem.

If you want to message just pm me. I know how scary this can be. Happy to provide any advice

feellikeanalien · 03/01/2023 19:40

My waters started to go at 25 weeks. I had the steroid injections, intravenous drips and total bed rest until DD decided to come out naturally at 28 weeks. She was less than 3 lbs and spent 3 months in NICU. She is now 15 and although she has SN (not caused by prematurity) she is just a normal teenager and we often joke together how she would never fit down my t-shirt now.

It is worrying but if the medics think it is best to deliver they will do this and your little one will get the best treatment if s/he ends up in NICU.

It's scary but they are little fighters. Wishing you all the best.

I'm not having contractions but I've got really bad stomach pains almost constantly in my bump and discomfort in lower back. I've buzzed the midwife twice in the night to say it's getting worse and just been given paracetamol and told to try and sleep. Stomach is really hurting and can't sleep and getting a bit pissed off! She said I'll know when its contractions and to not wish baby out, better he stays put.

Of course, but I'm in pain and something is obviously causing it?! My waters broke yesterday? So tired and want to cry Sad

Have the put you on a monitor?

PaperBagsAreUselessInRain · 04/01/2023 04:59

Is this your first? That pain could well be your way of having contractions surely. Some of mine were less contraction like and more constant pain?

Poor you you must be exhausted

doingitalllagain · 04/01/2023 05:04

3rd pregnancy, 1st born at 37+5 via emcs as started to dilate and he was breech, 2nd pregnancy was a miscarriage at 17 weeks was induced for medical management and the pains felt more contractiony than this (for lack of a better word!) but definitely in pain and feel like it's being ignored just because it isn't coming and going in waves and is constant!

Last had monitoring at 10.30pm last night, I noticed the bottom chart was really up and down but when I questioned the midwife she said all looked fine. Usually it's just a flat line for me on the bottom contraction bit but it definitely wasn't that time. Can't wait for the morning midwife to take over hopefully I'll get taken a bit more seriously by her Sad

It's infuriating isn't it. I actually find they do tend to listen to you more when it's not your first rodeo. Sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

I would definitely tell next shift that you think you're having contractions as you're in permanent pain and hopefully they will take you more seriously :(

Have you had enough to drink etc.?

Patronising bullshit imo!
Buzz and ask for monitoring again now. Flowers

doingitalllagain · 04/01/2023 06:16

Health care worker came to bring me more paracetamol and asked if pain had subsided, I said no, she said midwife will come do a CTG

Same midwife came as last night and said a CTG won't pick up constant pains as they aren't contractions and that later pregnancy is uncomfortable. She was chuckling to herself! I said even if it's not contractions I'm just wondering what's causing it as I'm a bit worried as I am pre term and they said last night my urine showed signs on infection and she took my obs and said no signs of infection and left again. Am I over reacting or is this a bit odd?! Sad

Wait for shift change at 7 then ask to be checked again
My waters broke at 36 weeks with my youngest. 2am. Delivered at 8.30am, 7lb1oz. A week in scbu on cpap
Kid is 14 now, and 6ft tall!
Good luck!

doingitalllagain · 04/01/2023 07:18

Shift change done, new midwife came to say hi and as soon as I mentioned any pain she's gone to get a monitor and said that contractions can present differently with different women and apologised that I wasn't taken seriously. Hallelujah.

As I was reading and you said previous MW wasn't taking your pain seriously I was like wtf!
Trust your gut, sending love

Glad you're being seen to properly now OP! Hope you start getting some answers

dakel · 04/01/2023 07:27

Good luck op. My nephew was born at 35 weeks due to his growth slowing down.

He didn't need any after care just under the lights for 24 hours for jaundice. He was a good 5lb and was home in 48 hours

doingitalllagain · 04/01/2023 07:42

What a surprise ctg is showing contractions!

Hope everything goes well, one of my little ones was 34 weeks and came home with me after a little sunbathing! She's 21 now 😊

Bells3032 · 04/01/2023 08:08

Good luck op. I had the same experience. They kept insisting it wasn't contractions. It wasn't even showing on thr ctg (which you should be havkng every 4-6 hours) and she was born 4 hours later.

The upside to a smaller baby is ususally a faster labour and Iess tearing lol

justcouldntthinkofausername · 04/01/2023 08:20

Good luck OP ❤️
Please try not to worry, my niece (now 3) was born at 30 weeks weighing 2lbs 13oz
They know what they're doing. You'll be fine xxx

PaperBagsAreUselessInRain · 04/01/2023 10:07
