Accidentally ate mince pies with alcohol

Hi guys, as the title says I accidentally ate 4 mince pies that contain alcohol and wondered if the alcohol amount was anything to worry about? I'm 11weeks pregnant and ate them over three days before realising my mistake (box says infused with Brandy and lists alcohol in the ingredients) - really silly of me as it was clearly written but I just completely missed it. I didn't cook them before eating them so the alcohol won't have evaporated.
Just concerned as it's my first but maybe (hopefully) I'm worried about nothing!

I wouldn't worry about the amount of alcohol in a mince pie, but please be aware of the possible effects of eating sugar during pregnancy.

Imagine coming on a thread to reassure an anxious woman about one thing and then trying to sow the seeds of anxiety about something else.

You and your baby will be fine OP.

I think they were referring to raw pastry, rather than minced meat?

Don't most kids eat mince pies at Christmas? That's a good clue that they're OK.

They say raw mince. That’s kind of you to try and justify it though.

You know, mince pies are often made with suet and are not vegetarian. Perhaps the PP has seen ‘not suitable for vegetarians’ and thinks it’s meat because of that.

A small amount of alcohol is fine - the advice was only reduced to no alcohol (as opposed to restricting it to a few units a week) in the 2010's when they decided women were "confused" by the advice!

This book is full of good scientific advice for pregnant ladies.

Mothers in 60's & 70's were told to drink 1/2 pint of stout per day for the iron & their children are fine too.

@musingsinmidlife

It's fruit mince in the pies, not meat pies. Are you in the UK?

I use mince to refer to fruit mince and to refer to minced meat - I was kind of joking but I don't think that came through! I didn't actually think she was eating raw meat pies!

The most surprising thing about this is that someone thinks mince pies are made of mince.

This was my biggest open mouthed moment.are there people among us who don’t no what a mince pie is?

the comment about raw mince made me laugh. Reminds me of Joey from Friends and Rachel’s beef mince trifle 😂

When I was little I thought they were made of mince meat but I'm sure all my adult life I have known they aren't.

The beef mince trifle though 😱, made me feel a bit sick in Friends.

Eating raw mince would be more harmful than the alcohol. Are you sure they weren’t already cooked?

You can't be living in the UK, and thinking there's meat in them...

Jusmakingit · 30/11/2022 17:17

I drank jack daniels on and off for the first two months of my first preg cause I didn’t have a period , suffered a miscarriage prior so falling preg again wasn’t even in my mind . My DD is absolutely fine and has zero health conditions.

preg again and not drank at all, had some salami a few months ago and had a sip of gin other day at a Christmas market. All fine :)

it’s scary when it’s your first and your so worried about everything , please don’t fret ! X

elorana · 30/11/2022 18:26

Thank you again everyone, really appreciate it 😊
As many of you said it's most likely because it's my first and I'm just worried about doing anything wrong. Thank you for the reassurance

Just made a batch with homemade mincemeat and I certainly put in a good glug of brandy! Currently week 27 ;) Enjoy the rest of the box when you get chance!

Yarrawonga · 30/11/2022 19:54

As somebody has said, if they are cooked, there won’t be any alcohol left in them. It boils at less than 80 degrees.

gogohmm · 30/11/2022 20:16

When I had my dd we were advised a few drinks a week was fine - babies were born just fine, in generations before mine, Guinness nightly was recommended!

Alcohol in cooking isn't a worry, just eat a balanced diet and try to relax

Hooverphobe · 30/11/2022 20:20

Can I eat a whole box and still be safe to drive? Are 14 year olds binging on mince pies at the park after school?

If they're the standard sort of boxed ones that I get they're already cooked, but you can heat them up again (instructions on the box), so the mincemeat in them isn't raw, so to speak.

Also, I seldom see any for sale that aren't vegetarian now. Might be a bit of a nuisance as it means I have no excuse not to shove them in my face regularly.

Misty er...about what? Heating them, eating them, or veggie ones?

Gmchristina · 09/12/2023 20:16

They have not got meat in them😂😂

Gmchristina · 09/12/2023 20:17

Are you American?😂😂 They don’t have mince meat in them, it’s fruit

The most surprising thing about this is that someone thinks mince pies are made of mince.

I made some with real mince, once, following a medieval recipe - they were lovely.
