Cholestatsis in subsequent pregnancies

Hello,

I was diagnosed with OC/ICP at 35 weeks in my first pregnancy. Ended in a horrible induction and emergency section.

Was told I am likely to have it again but am currently at 32 weeks and other than the odd
itchy/tingling I feel ok so far. If I was to develop it again I would want a scheduled c section but not averse to natural birth if all is well.

My question is how many people DIDN'T get cholestasis in subsequent pregnancies? I feel like i'm in limbo waiting for it to happen when it may well not?!

Following as I had this in my first pregnancy at 37 weeks... currently 28 weeks and so paranoid!! X

Flamingosarepinkpinkpink · 24/11/2022 13:56

I didn't get it the second time around. I was very worried about getting again as well. Especially as I had to insist on testing me for it.
I was only diagnosed with it the week before my dute date with first so was induced on due date. Both healthy babies. But needed to be induced for both. Good luck with your pregnancy.

edibletreats · 24/11/2022 22:21

Thank you!
Since writing this I’ve had an itchy palm and arms lol. I’ll see how I get on as I have a couple of appointments at the end of next week so might just have some bloods done then. I know it takes a while to show up so don’t want to pre empt but I’ve also heard some people only have ‘moderate’ itching…

@Flamingosarepinkpinkpink were you tested at all in your second pregnancy?

I didn't get it the second time. However I was very paranoid and got my blood taken at every little itch. I think the midwives were sick of me by the end! It is definitely worth getting checked out if you're worried. They can control it with medication to an extent I believe.

Dentistlakes · 24/11/2022 22:30

I had it wk36 of my first pregnancy and didn’t get it in my second. I was also told it was likely I’d get it the second time so I was on the lookout for it.

Flamingosarepinkpinkpink · 25/11/2022 10:58

@edibletreats I had to ask to be tested but I think they were a bit fed up of me asking like @blackcat26.

Novemberhater · 25/11/2022 11:00

Three full term pregnancies. Only had it in the second.

MochaHoldTheMilkAndCoffee · 25/11/2022 11:11

There's an 80% chance of getting OC in future pregnancies - so a 20% of not.
I'm currently suffering from it in my second pregnancy, I was diagnosed with it at 36w with both pregnancies.
I had the itch for weeks before my bile acids were high enough to diagnose.
Good luck

CristinaNov182 · 25/11/2022 13:46

I am also curious about this,

I didn’t have any itching at all during my first pregnancy, but following not feeling well after birth (also didn’t feel well before), the go discovered high elevated liver enzymes and he said I probably had this during pregnancy and that you can have it without being itchy.

I’m pregnant again now, 2nd trimester, so far my liver enzymes are ok.

do they test you for this too, or just the bile test? (And what’s that?)

edibletreats · 27/11/2022 10:57

@CristinaNov182 I'm definitely not an expert but found this website helpful icpcare.org/

@MochaHoldTheMilkAndCoffee have they said if you will have to be induced by a certain week?

Good to know that some if you managed to avoid it. Will push for bloods this week for peace of mind if nothing else.

I had severe itching and was diagnosed only in week 36, my levels were tested twice a week and I was induced a few days before due date. My itching took 4 months after birth to completely dissappear it was horrendous! I'm hoping to be tested if I get pregnant again and going to opt for a csection. Good luck OP

MrsBudd · 27/11/2022 11:19

I had it bad with my first (baby boy). My levels never got very high with my second (baby girl) though I did have itching so had weekly bloods and induction at 39 weeks to be on the safe side. Mood

MrsBudd · 27/11/2022 11:20

Sorry not sure why it says mood at the end of that 😂😂

MochaHoldTheMilkAndCoffee · 27/11/2022 13:02

@edibletreats my hospital follow the latest RCOG advice, my levels stayed between 19 and 40 but as I had gestational diabetes I was to be induced before 39 weeks.
With any other health issues I would've been able to go a further week

I delivered my little girl yesterday, induced at 38+3 💓

Aww congrats @MochaHoldTheMilkAndCoffee. Hope you are recovering well and enjoying all the newborn snuggles

Did you end up developing OC again?

Munches · 27/12/2022 07:06

I had it very badly in my first pregnancy. It was only my husband telling the midwife at one of my appointments ( was quite a way through already) that I was constantly itchy and scratching myself everywhere- not just palms, that I got diagnosed. Had liver scans etc , was checked at the hospital three times a week and had bloods/ scans etc. It actually heightened and I had to be induced early which resulted in an emergency section.

Second time around I never had it but I was incredibly worried about it. I was so paranoid about any kind of itch pretty much all the way through.

edibletreats · 27/12/2022 07:44

Hi @Louiseem

I’ve been having weekly bloods which have all been fine so far. Currently 37weeks and the itching seems to have ramped up. Next blood tests tomorrow so will know more then. How are you doing?

Ah hope they go OK! I'm 32 weeks nothing currently but not having weekly bloods and I didn't develop until 37 last time.. really hoping I'm lucky this time!

Kittylickingplate · 27/12/2022 09:02

Five pregnancies and I had it for all five. All babies induced and born before 37 weeks. I still have scarring from scratching myself with a hairbrush (don't do that)

edibletreats · 27/12/2022 13:17

@Louiseem fingers crossed for you!

@Kittylickingplate ahh how unlucky! Haven’t had to use the hairbrush as yet. Its doubly cruel as its not the easiest to contort a heavily pregnant body to scratch the very soles of your feet!

OP posts:
Kittylickingplate · 27/12/2022 23:20

I loved my coir door mat, I used to scruff my feet on that. Oh, the itching, I swear my eyeballs itched.
My babies all had decreased movements as well, so scary, so closely monitored and early inductions.
Best of luck and you have my utmost sympathy.
