Bleeding in early pregnancy- please comment in you've had it?

I'm 4 weeks 1 day pregnant..got BFP at 12 dpo (which is 2 days late for my period as I have a short lutueal phase). Tested positive on 13 and 14 dpo (yday) too but stopped myself from testing today.

I've had cramps on and off faintly throughout but def noticed more today and last night and now I've had some brown Cm/discharge/bleeding. Enough to see on pantyliner and when wiping. I'm so so worried. I know it could be implantation bleeding but if I got positives from 12dpo then surely by 15dpo this should have happened a while ago?

If you had bleeding when did you have it? How much was it? So so worried this is a chemical and wish there was something I could do to stop it going :(

I had bleeding with both my sons around the 6/7 week mark. Both times it was like someone turned on a tap the amount of blood was horrific. Both pregnancies ended in healthy babies.

username8888 · 19/11/2022 21:06

Yes, and baby was fine. It's very common

Partyprofessional · 19/11/2022 21:10

Yes I bled with my son right up to 6 months pregnant. Every month I had a bleed. Not heavy or anything. I dreaded going to the toilet. I didn’t enjoy my pregnancy at all with the worry. Every time I bled I went to the hospital and had a scan, everything was fine. They said it was one of those unexplained things. He was born healthy at 38 weeks. He’s 12 now. I did have a miscarriage two years prior to this.

Ivyonafence · 19/11/2022 21:14

I've had bleeding during two healthy pregnancies- now 3 and 5 and perfect.

I think a third of women bleed during pregnancy.

The faint/strong line on a pregnancy test isn't reliable, I'd stop doing them if you can because it will probably just stress you out.

The most reliable thing would be two blood tests a few days apart, to see if the hormone level is going up or down. Can you book in to see your GP?

Rosiestraws · 19/11/2022 21:37

Thank you all so much for taking time out of your evening to reply. It's so hard to know what to think and do. This is my first pregnancy and I'm 36 so that's against me already. It helps to hear all the good stories when I've got nothing to compare it to myself. Even though I feel like it's more likely to end in chemical as time goes on. I'm having browny discharge whenever I wipe still.. not much at all right now but its definitely there and it's just like I am when I spot before my period... I usually have this for a few days (and then convince myself it's implantation bleeding 🙄 ) and then have proper heavy red flow. So I'm wondering if this will follow a similar pattern. Gosh I almost wish I'd never done those tests and found out i was pregnant a few days if it was going to end like this. I know it's not definitely over but just if it does. .

sorry I also meant to ask, to those who are saying I should get it checked out. . what do you mean? just call gp on Monday you mean? I was only 4 weeks 1 day today so hadn't called gp to inform them I was pregnant yet so got no details of midwife or epu or anything...

OP posts:
CornishGem1975 · 19/11/2022 21:43

I went to EPU, had bloods and they scanned me at 5+1 as my HCG was really high. Nothing to be seen. They scanned me again at just over 7 weeks and there was a heartbeat.

The truth is, at such an early stage there nothing anything can do to help you and there's not a lot of reassurance to be had at this stage either. EPU were supportive but quite blunt.

It's a waiting game. Fingers crossed OP, lots of people experience bleeding and go on to have healthy pregnancies.

Badhairday101 · 19/11/2022 21:44

With my missed miscarriages I had no bleeding at all until I actually miscarried at around 11 weeks and also really strong positive pregnancy tests right up until I actually miscarried.
I had some spotting early on with my healthy pregnancies and have friends who had heavy bleeding and everything was fine.
I hope everything works out for you, the waiting is awful.

Margo34 · 19/11/2022 22:00

If it does unfortunately end as a chemical pregnancy @Rosiestraws still contact your GP to tell them and ask them to log it on your record, they won't do much else but record it at such an early stage.

I had bleeding in early pregnancy/chemicals, 5 days worth of a little bit of brown then a a bit more and still tested positive for a few days after bleeding started properly. I wish I'd logged my chemical pregnancies with the GP - so that I might have had some help TTC/checking fertility when I subsequently miscarried at 7/8w, (then had DC1), 9w and 6w. That last miscarriage at 6w I was still testing positive a further 6w after bleeding!!
The anxiety is awful and it never really leaves you either. Good luck in your journey.

Chubbycheeks0203 · 19/11/2022 22:12

Hi OP I had light bleeding from around 6-16 weeks and now have my 18m old boy. I did notice at 8 weeks I had significantly more and I called 111 who advised me to go to A&E. I had an internal scan and everything was fine. Never found out why it happened but apparently some women more susceptible especially if you have underlying issues such as endometriosis. Go checked out to be safe and if you absolutely cannot wait try and find a private clinic for an early reassurance scan to put your mind at ease.

Fleabea · 20/11/2022 07:33

I have had both - bleeding that was the beginning of a miscarriage and also implantation bleeding to the extent that I didn't realise I was pregnant as I thought it was my period. Best of luck x

Paddleducks · 20/11/2022 07:40

I had brown and red spotting randomly with my third pregnancy. It was a fair bit if I remember, the pregnancy was fine though and it stopped in the 2nd/3rd trimester. I also spotted after sex in the first trimester. I have had a miscarriage too and the difference was the spotting was very quickly followed by period type cramps and a total loss of pregnancy symptoms. It was very sudden for me.

Best of luck OP.

Paddleducks · 20/11/2022 07:41

I should add the spotting from the successful pregnancy was worst around 4/5/6 weeks.

Rosiestraws · 20/11/2022 09:25

So I've done another two pregnancy tests this morning. First response is faint line.. much fainter than the last few. Clearblue still says "pregnant 1-2 weeks" but I think my breasts fell less tender and less swollen too and there's more brown bleeding still. I feel like deep down it's over but I'm still clinging to hope.. Not sure what to think or feel. Especially as my partner is going away for a week today. It's so horrible...I wish I knew for sure one way or another. I guess all I can do if I'm still testing positive tomorrow is call gp and ask for blood tests?

Hi, just reading up on this thread.. sorry you’re experiencing this @Rosiestraws.. I’m kind of in the same boat. Had positive pregnancy tests Monday, Wednesday & Friday last week. Started spotting on Friday night and bleeding properly yesterday with worse cramps than I’m used to. So pretty sure it’s a chemical as AF was due yesterday anyway 🥺

I wasn’t going to call the GP but reading the comments on here I’m thinking I should? I also hadn’t been in touch with the GP as it was so early.. I think I was about 4 weeks 3 days 🤔 I know some people are saying they bled through their pregnancies but I don’t think I’m still pregnant 😢 however wondering if it’s worth a conversation/blood test at the GP anyway? X

Rosiestraws · 20/11/2022 19:49

hi @Laul89 well I ended up calling 111 today as figured there's always a teeny chance they might be able to do anything. I'm meant to have a call back from some out of hours place later. It's just because I read something about progesterone sometimes being able to stop a miscarriage and thought well maybe they'll do something and give me that. But I'm pretty convinced I'll end up being told to just wait and do a test in a week or something.

Have you done anymore tests? If I hadn't done them I wouldn't have been as worried but my line today is seriously fading so think it'll be gone tomorrow

I would defo have told my gp regardless tho as then means if I get pregnant again I might be able to ask for progesterone.

Bleeding in early pregnancy- please comment in you've had it?

@Laul89 as horrible as this sounds, I would call GP because if it does end in chemical/early miscarriage, you want it recorded. The NHS will only act after three losses so you need any loss to be acknowledged on their system. However, I hope for you both this is not needed.

2bazookas · 20/11/2022 20:15

I had bright red spotting for several days at 6 to 8 weeks. GP said " just take things easy for a few days, and see what happens". It stopped, never came back, baby arrived safe and well.

Laul89 · 20/11/2022 22:11

@Rosiestraws please keep me updated with what 111/GP says to you? I’m keeping everything crossed there’s a good outcome for you! I used first response tests on Wednesday and Friday but I feel Fridays line was fainter.. then I tested yesterday morning and there was basically no line there 😢 however it was a different brand of test, not sure that would make much difference. Isn’t it horrible being stuck in limbo, I’d much rather someone could confirm what has happened but I’m 99% sure it’s chemical for me 😢

@IWillBeWaxingAnOwl thank you so much that’s really helpful, I will call in the morning. I just hate how you have to tell the receptionist what you want to speak to the GP for 🥴 my bleeding seems to have slowed now so I only really had that one day yesterday. However I usually have quite light, short periods so it’s so difficult to tell!

Rosiestraws · 20/11/2022 22:29

@Laul89 well I was supposed to have a call back from the out of hours provider at 7.40 but I haven't heard anything. I appreciate it's not an emergency or anything like that but just wish they wouldn't say that would happen when it hasn't...guess I'll try and sleep. Keep crying though and feeling so sad..and my partner is away now so that doesn't help it all..

I'll call gp in the morning...or maybe do an online consultation thing we have for my gp I guess...might be easier..

OP posts:
Laul89 · 20/11/2022 23:02

@Rosiestraws yeah it’s annoying when they give a time & don’t call 😳 bless you, it’s so hard isn’t it. I feel like I’ve kind of blocked it out but then I’m reading all these ladies saying everything was fine for them but I’m too scared to let myself have that little glimmer of hope!!
It probably feels worse for you that your partner is away, I know it would for me too. But yes try and get some well needed sleep and call your GP in the morning. I’m going to call mine and see what they say. Please keep me updated, hope you’re ok ❤️

Rosiestraws · 21/11/2022 11:22

So they did call back last night but it was about 11.15. Lucky I couldn't sleep.

Contradictory information from them as she said I should go to A&E in the morning and they could refer me to early pregnancy unit. I said surely it wasn't an emergency and I should call my GP but she seemed to say it would be quicker/better to go to A&E.

Obviously I did not take that advice, but I called my GP - after getting 2 clear negative tests this morning. He did contact the EPU as he'd originally thought I should be seen by them but they advised him that as I was before 6 weeks they don't scan me. All I can do now is wait a week and do another test. If it's negative then that's that but if it's positive (which it clearly wont be!) then they'll see me. I still haven't had a proper bleed yet though - just sort of browny/grey spotting - so seems like CM mixed with a bit of brown blood. If I hadnt got the negative tests I might have held out some hope but clearly it's done. Guess I just wait for the bleed now 😔

I'm only just realising now that I didnt ask about if they're going to test my TSH levels (I have had high TSH a few years ago and had heard it could affect pregnancy etc) or anything else.. I guess maybe when I contact them to let them know the result of the pregnancy test I can mention it then..

OP posts:
IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 21/11/2022 11:25

@Rosiestraws in your position I'd be asking the GP to recheck thyroid and note you are explicitly TTC so it should be in x range. Sorry to hear the tests are fainter and wishing you all the best x

Laul89 · 21/11/2022 12:17

@Rosiestraws glad you got to speak to someone. I have called the GP this morning and was told by a receptionist that a nurse would call me back as there was no need for me to see a GP 🙄

The nurse simply said that as I’m testing negative now, the pregnancy ‘wasn’t viable’ but next time to try and wait to test until 1 week after a missed period (I mean my god how much will that drag 😩). Also I wouldn’t need any blood tests at this point but if I hadn’t successfully conceived in 3months to make an appointment and they’d check my hormone levels. She said some people do still bleed during pregnancy but I’ve had the negative test now so.. I know I’m not pregnant anymore and at least it’s down on my records.

Thinking of you and hope it all goes well in future ❤️

I think as it's so early
