Giving birth a little early

Hello everyone

I got a call from the hospital to book me in for a caesarean when I will be 38+6. Which I know isn’t exactly majorly early but it seems a little early still. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have my baby as early as is safe.

Did anyone else have their baby early and all was fine?? (What stage did you have your baby)

Thanks x

I was induced at 38+2 and baby was born a day later due to gestational diabetes. She was perfectly healthy and is now a thriving 18 month old

RatherBeRiding · 14/10/2022 13:02

Isn't it classed as full term from 37 weeks these days? I had my first at 38+1 and this was classed as full term. He was fine. Once you've passed 37 weeks it hardly counts as 'early' I don't think.

NoSquirrels · 14/10/2022 13:02

Sounds like perfect timing to me. By 38 weeks you’re usually pretty desperate to get going!

Rockingcloggs · 14/10/2022 13:03

I was induced at 37 weeks exactly! He was 9lb 10oz and he was perfect except for his blood sugars but that's because I had GD and they were fine after a few good feeds!

Good luck!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/10/2022 13:04

DS 1 - 35 weeks via induction
DS 2 - 39 weeks exactly via planned CS

Both were absolutely fine. DS1 had 10 days in special care, but came home at 5lbs. DS2 was 10lbs at birth, had a bit of jaundice but no real issue.

Both are now in their 20s and fine.

38+6 is basically full term. It should be fine, good luck and enjoy your beautiful baby

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 14/10/2022 13:04

37 weeks for mine.
Absolutely fine.
With no2, I was home within 24 hours with my teeny tiny baby.

Ivy90 · 14/10/2022 13:05

I think it’s to try to avoid you going into spontaneous labour

Sprogonthetyne · 14/10/2022 13:07

Our trust aims for 39 weeks for planned sections, which your only one day before. I had DD at 39+1, she was a little smaller them my first (41+3) but absolutely fine.

MrsSamR · 14/10/2022 13:11

They book c-sections in for as close to 39 weeks as possible. With my DD I was booked in at 39+1 but my waters broke when I was 38+5 and she was fine. Currently pregnant with DD2 and I've been booked in at 39 weeks exactly.

RoachTheHorse · 14/10/2022 13:12

My eldest arrived naturally at 38+2. They're fully ready by then so no issues. If you are wanting / need a c section then they're probably trying to get ahead of Labour starting and it becoming a potential emergency, as a PP said.

Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone! X

one day shy of 39 weeks sounds good to me. Definitely better to go sooner if it's a C-section than risk going into spontaneous labour at 39 or 40 weeks. I think I had my daughter at 39 weeks on the nose.

Cats23 · 14/10/2022 13:27

I had my first at 27weeka, 19 yrs ago ...
My 2nd at 38.
Your baby will be a week early, it will be fine

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 14/10/2022 13:30

I was induced with DD2 at 36+6, she was born at 37+2. Tiny but otherwise fine, she just needed warming up in one of those resusataire thingys!

Erber · 14/10/2022 13:32

I had mine at 35+1 and 38 weeks exactly and there were no issues with either. Neither needed to go to nicu or had any issues. They had to be wrapped up warm but that was mostly due to size (5lb 1oz and 6lb exactly), they could lose heat quickly if not well wrapped up but even then after the first few days this wasn't such an issue.

Demigibbo · 14/10/2022 13:36

Thanks so much everyone. Guess I overthink too much x

I've had three kids
35 weeks emergency section
39 weeks scheduled section
36 weeks emergency section (was booked for 39 +1)

All kids came home no problems

First born was in scbu for 4 days then I took him home against their advice but he was fine- they wanted him to have more established feeding but I couldn't cope with trying to breast feed in public
39 weeks went home next day
36 weeks two nights at hospital and home next morning

MeowMeowPowerRangers · 14/10/2022 13:50

That's full term not early or even a little early.

Good luck!

Soubriquet · 14/10/2022 13:57

Dd was 38+4. 5lb 13oz. Home the next day
DS was 37+3. 5lb 4oz. Home the next day

Georgeskitchen · 14/10/2022 14:30

Had my last one at around 37+5 he was my smallest at 6:14.
He was fine, mild jaundice and swallowed mucus but now in his 20s and over 6 feet 😀

Demigibbo · 14/10/2022 14:54

Thanks so much ! X

My 37+2 weeker was a full pound heavier than my 38 weeker! My first - the 38 weeks - was 6lb 11oz and my second 7lb 12oz.

One is racing round the living room and the other is asleep on my shoulder. Both were healthy at birth.

Good luck OP, you'll soon be enjoying those baby snuggles!

Loulou1712 · 14/10/2022 18:33

Devils advocate but Due dates are an estimate anyway, so you could actually be closer to 40 weeks anyway 🤷‍♀️
Good luck, and enjoy that extra week with baby :) x

Sandcastlesinthesky · 14/10/2022 18:35

39 weeks is now considered to be full term.

BeanieTeen · 14/10/2022 18:53

Went in to labour at 38 weeks exactly, all fine. Went home the same day as giving birth. Anything from 38 to 42 weeks isn’t considered a concern.
