Hello everyone

I am new to this so bear with me

FTM here, unfortunately high risk pregnancy with me:( so I’m having to have a LOT of ultrasounds and I mean a lot. I know they’re medically necessary but I worry there may be a risk though doc says no

Has anyone else had a lot and their baby developed as normal as they got older??? Am I being silly?? How many did you all have??

By the end of my pregnancy I would have had around 16

I had 22 scans with DD2 and 20 with DD1, both were premature pre 29 weeks, so over a scan a week at times. Both are perfectly healthy, with perfect hearing, eyesight & development. Any risk from scans has never been proved in any peer-reviewed medical study

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 12:29

@DesignerRecliner this has made me feel so much better. Thank you so much! Do you mind sending me a PM? Would love to talk further if you didn’t mind

I had 2 a week from 16 weeks. DTs are 2.5 and both perfectly healthy.

milawops · 11/10/2022 12:34

I had 2 a week and a weekly cord scan from 32-37 weeks. Had an emergency one at 6 weeks and 2 private ones plus the normal 12 and 20 ones. Daughter is now 18 months and developing perfectly normally.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 11/10/2022 12:36

Out of interest do any of the posters answering babies have birthmarks?

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 12:39

@Eek3under3 @milawops ahh thank you so so much! You don’t understand how much I appreciate it

I would have had around 15 with one of mine and around 25 with another.

Not much idea what you are asking really. The one with lesser number has no issues at all. They are left handed whereas none of my other kids are, nor are DH or I but the majority of relatives on my side are so probably genetic, plus left handed mess is hardly an issue as such. Apart from that no differences to my others that just had the usual number. In fact one of mine that had the usual number has many neurodiversities.

The one that had the greater number is pretty fucked physically with a wide range of issues including those stemming from birth defects, which is why they had the large number of ultrasounds so not sure what you are after there, some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy?

Essentially, don’t take notice of what you read on the Internet or ‘studies’ that are not actually recognised studies in the medical sense (peer review accepted), or what Doris down the road tells you, or a bunch of randoms on Mumsnet. Listen to Dr’s who have trained for years in this and do it for a living.

HoppingPavlova · 11/10/2022 12:42

*left handedness

KitchenSupper · 11/10/2022 12:45

Average of at least once a week, although once I had 8 in a day. There’s no risk.
Without the scans he had a 95% risk of being stillborn, so some risk would have been acceptable, but ultrasound doesn’t carry risk. Compare where the operator stands during an x ray and during an ultrasound.
He does have a birthmark, as do I and his sister, so very little chance of it being related in any way I would think.

eurochick · 11/10/2022 12:47

One of my friends is a paediatrician and if she had some quiet time she would scan herself to say hi to the baby, if that gives you any comfort.

I had many - daily in the final weeks. There don't seem to be any issues. My daughter is left-handed. This seems to be the only "issue" that comes out of lots of scans.

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 12:50

@HoppingPavlova thank you! Tbh you’ve answered what I wanted to know. Was just curious as to whether ultrasounds cause any issues for baby’s future development. As I say, I think I’m being silly but the reassurance helps so thank you

@KitchenSupper tysm hun!

@eurochick thank you so much. This is very reassuring as I once had to have 2 in the space of 24 hours

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 12:55

@KitchenSupper hello :) is your little one all okay now? I just ask as I had to have two in 24 hours which I was particularly worried about

OP posts:
PinkButtercups · 11/10/2022 13:01

No, they're absolutely fine.

I also had two within 24 hours and again, fine.

I was in every 2 weeks with DS but only have a scan every 4 weeks with these:3 twins.

PinkButtercups · 11/10/2022 13:01

These twins*

20viona · 11/10/2022 13:02

I had about 15 scans with both of my pregnancies and my girls are fine. I found it a privilege having extra scans, loved it!

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 13:10

@PinkButtercups @20viona thank you so much. Just goes to show, stay away from Google! 😉

Eek3under3 · 11/10/2022 13:35

Neither of my DTs have a birthmark. Interestingly, the one that showed cause for concern and the reason for the extra scans looks to be left handed.

Chattycathydoll · 11/10/2022 13:38

I had to have scans every 2 weeks after 12 week scan showed an issue. I was also warned it was likely DD would be born prematurely, and to have my bag packed from 24 weeks.

She stayed in til 39 weeks and was born completely healthy, had additional examination including an x ray after birth but… no problems at all. She’s now a healthy 7 year old. She’s dyslexic, but so is her dad, so I don’t think it’s related to anything from those early days!

Strokethefurrywall · 11/10/2022 13:42

Multiple scans with both babies, no issues with either, unless you count being a southpaw as an issue!

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 13:43

@Chattycathydoll thank you so much. Glad your little one is okay

Demigibbo · 11/10/2022 13:44

@Strokethefurrywall thank you love. How many do you think u had, roughly? X

I'm another who had ever second weekly scans for both DC between 13 weeks and 30 weeks. Both DC are absolutely fine. I did read at one point that there is a theory that more scans can make it more likely that you are left handed - first DC is and second DC isn't - but sounds pretty nuts to me!

Good luck!

HerculesMulligan · 11/10/2022 13:45

I had upwards of 20 with my now 3yo (having had about four with my DS in a lower risk pregnancy). She's extremely well, energetic, fearless and has no birthmarks!

Waitwhat23 · 11/10/2022 13:48

I had pre existing high blood pressure and gestational diabetes so lots and lots of scans (20+ I think). No problems with the wee one whatsoever.

Am interested to hear from pp about a possible correlation to left handedness though - had never heard of this. My wee one is still using both hands more or less equally so will look out for it in the future.

She does have a birthmark but then so do I and I know my mum didn't get (any?) scans.
