Better

But there is more than one maternity unit in my Trust area - it's a large rural one

(same as Piff's probably!)

spicemonster · 25/01/2008 19:51

Least well. Frankly am not surprised as my care during cs was great but after was shocking (no food for 24 hours, no help with bfing and got thrown my DS in the night because I couldn't get him out of the bassinet when he was hungry and told 'what's wrong with you - broken your legs?')

Hated it beyond words and fought to go home 2 days after CS

The hospital i had dd in is rated as 'best'
Compared to the one i had ds in, it was brilliant

eandh · 25/01/2008 19:59

mine was better didnt have sheets canged for 4 days I was tehre after c section, has c-diff and superbugs that have been on national news (Maidstone) and although the odd midwife was lovely the nursery nurses and few old bids were plain horrible

eandh · 25/01/2008 20:03

duchessof norks I must be nearish you??

tribpot · 25/01/2008 20:10

Mine is Fair, and I think that is too low based on my individual experience at least. It's a nice hospital (yes, they do exist), I had a midwife that I knew from antenatal care (yes, they do exist too) and good breastfeeding support. I think it was a bit hard done by, to be honest, but that's just my review!

whomovedmychocolate · 25/01/2008 20:13

I think there is a real problem with this study - my hospital only rates as 'fair' but possibly that's because the other local hospital has closed to all complex cases and it's workload has gone up 60% over three years with no extra staff or funding . They now take all complex cases for the county. The local midwifery units have a wonderful report in all studies - of course they do - fart at the wrong time during your pregnancy and you will transferred to the regional hospital.

I'd be quite interested to see these figures against a staff to patient ratio list - ie perhaps the hospitals which are coming out really low are just overstretched.

I agree standards are low in some places, but I think it's partly to do with poor 'reorganisations' making things untenable.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/01/2008 20:22

Least well, but again more than one hospital makes up the Trust, and mine is far better than the other IMHO.

carmenelectra · 25/01/2008 20:23

It is most definitely due to staff shortages why some trusts are coming out at the bottom.

Have just downloded my trust ratings and the one i had my last baby on and ive surprised at some of the 'ratings' out of 5. For my trust we have a rating of 2/5 for womens choices in labour which im shocked at. We are very much for active childbirth(generally) so as i have been with the trust for several yrs, i would totally disagree. Probably not very pro active though when understaffed(most of the time) and are looking after 2 or 3 labourers.

However, we did get 5/5 for the extent that staff are trained in core midwifery skills. Clearly, due to the fact that im off on mat leave at present.

ScoobyDoo · 25/01/2008 20:29

The 3 near me are, least well, fair & best.

I was under the one which is best when pregnant with ds but moved house, i had both my children at the lest well one, both births were ok but not overly impressed!

gigglewitch · 25/01/2008 20:34

the rubbish one where i had the DSes is rated the same as the excellent one where DD was born both called "better"..... wierd.

WingsofanAngel · 25/01/2008 20:36

Best

MrsJohnCusack · 25/01/2008 21:43

fair for the one where I had DD
but then there is only ONE in London that is better - all the others are fair or least well.

had DS in New Zealand - much MUCH better in every way

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 25/01/2008 21:44

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 25/01/2008 22:50

i cant imagine why a 10 year old hospital should have problems - they should have got it right

OP posts:
FoghornLeghorn · 26/01/2008 07:26

The hospital where I had DD's is Least Well. The hospital where I will be having DC3 is Fair.

I had 1 good experience at my previous hospital and one horrendous experience - luck of the draw I reckon.

squimlet · 26/01/2008 07:29

good grief. ours says better. I dont think so, it was positively grubby when I was in there and its flipping brand new

eidsvold · 26/01/2008 07:41

wow - the one I had dd1 one has a Best - the one near where I worked ( that I was fearful of having dd1 in and was berated by midwife for expressing that fear) got a fair.

eidsvold · 26/01/2008 07:42

oh and it was brilliant - they were fabulous in caring for us and our very ill somewhat early dd1!!!!

scaryhairycat · 26/01/2008 08:54

Better, we'll see.

yurt1 · 26/01/2008 09:01

Gave birth to 3 boys in 2 different areas. Both hospitals are 'least well'. The frightening thing is the hospital we have ds3 in was about a million times better than the one ds1 and ds2 were born in. So they really need a 'truly diabolical' section as well!

edam · 26/01/2008 09:17

my two local trusts are least well. Oh dear.

Tbh the national picture is shameful. Trusts have been getting away with dangerously low staffing ratios and poor provision of scanning for far too long - because pregnant women and new mothers are a bit too busy/vulnerable to protest loudly. They are hardly going to go on a protest march about maternity services. And the government writes the NCT off as too middle class.

edam · 26/01/2008 09:20

Can't believe St Thomas's where I gave birth got 'better'. I hope things have changed radically since I had ds. There was one midwife to seven women in labour on the midwife-led (hah!) birth centre and the same in the hospital birth centre. Ds and I are just bloody lucky nothing went wrong. Apart from the third degree tear because there was no midwife in the room to tell me not to push.
