Cake and gestational diabetes?

Can I have a slice of my birthday cake tonight at my party? I have GD, and I’m controlling it well with my diet. However I don’t know if I can eat a small slice or not?

Yes you can and you can up the insulin for the carbs in the cake

Dogtooth · 19/09/2022 17:52

My friend who had gd was told she could have Christmas dinner and it'd be fine. As a one off.

Albgo · 19/09/2022 17:54

No.
You can't eat anything like that with GD.

Whoever told her that was wrong. Every time you go over your sugar levels your harming the baby.

I haven’t had any dessert since I found out I had GD at 27 weeks (I’m almost 33 weeks now). I’ll probably try a small slice then and hopefully my glucose levels won’t get too too high. I’m not on insulin or medication

If you insist pair it with something. Are you on the GD UK Facebook group? Join it if you're not.

I probably won’t have any other carbs tonight as dinner will be salad and chicken as usual, so let’s see.. I don’t want to do anything that will harm baby in any way. I was confused

Have a very small slice and try to go for a brisk walk afterwards (about 15 mins).

I would. You'll get much better advice on there than here.
Happy birthday btw.

Couldn't you pair it with some double cream? I've been able to pair 70% dark chocolate with double cream and sugars stay in the 5/6's, though I am aware there will be way more sugar in cake !

I couldn't have any of my wedding cake and it looked delicious !

Iliketeaagain · 19/09/2022 18:20

Honestly, I had (diet controlled) GD and had cake on my birthday - I suppose it depends how high your blood sugars go, but for a PP to say that every single time your blood sugars go up, you're harming the baby is just scaremongering - that level of stress and anxiety is more harmful to any baby than one piece of cake in 6 weeks.

Have a piece of cake, it's your birthday. And if you're worried, go for a walk afterwards.

I did think the same to be honest. My midwife told me we're allowed the odd treat ! If you're diet controlled too and it's staying good then even better

Albgo · 19/09/2022 18:26

It's not scaremongering.
It's like saying the odd cigarette is fine when pregnant. It's not.

dreamerkr · 19/09/2022 18:34

The highest my blood sugar has been is 8.5, that was after a dinner out. I don’t want to take any risks as I’m so scared, this is the furthest I’ve been in any pregnancy, but my midwife has said that I can have the smallest slice and then go for a brisk walk for 15-20 mins afterwards and drink lots of water. I might not have it though tbh

I would pair it with cream and maybe eat a babybel or nuts for good measure. Happy birthday!

Albgo · 19/09/2022 18:37

8.5 is high though. Was that one or two hours after?

dreamerkr · 19/09/2022 18:40

Thank you!

It was 1 hour after dinner last week. And the midwife still thinks I don’t need medicine although I messaged her! GD sucks 🥺

It really does. I hated it. But it's only for 12 weeks. You'll get through it.

mathanxiety · 19/09/2022 18:48

Wrap up a big chunk of your cake in wax paper and foil and freeze it.

It will be waiting for you in seven short weeks.

You are only cheating yourself if you have it. You're not on the GD diet in order to avoid being sent to the Principal's office.

GD carries with it a heightened risk of developing Type II later in life, so if I were you I'd consider starting now on a Type II prevention eating habit.

mathanxiety · 19/09/2022 18:49

Your midwife isn't inspiring much confidence in me.

Have you seen a dietitian?
