Cake and gestational diabetes?

Can I have a slice of my birthday cake tonight at my party? I have GD, and I’m controlling it well with my diet. However I don’t know if I can eat a small slice or not?

You can have a small slice and then have a walk, or go up and down the stairs, or do any sort of moderate exercise. I've had GD in my two pregnancies and when I really really really wanted to cheat, that's how I did it.

Thank you guys! I have seen a dietitian, she actually said the same thing after seeing my readings (well, she said that I can have the occasional treat as long as it’s a one off and not everyday), but I haven’t felt comfortable to eat any dessert. Only 7ish weeks to go so not too long!

@Albgo this is from the website you linked to:

"One high reading does not cause major complications with gestational diabetes."

So I would say you are scaremongering. I would be doubtful that one cigarette would cause problems either tbh. The risks are that these things become habitual.

I had GD, but only found out with 6 weeks to go, so I would have had plenty of days with high readings (so many lovely pasta meals 🥺) and my baby is absolutely fine. Please ignore the "one high reading and your baby will have 7 legs and you will explode" crowd. A small slice, eaten slowly, followed by a good walk should be fine. Type 2 diabetes is a lot to do with long term lifestyle, so the idd slice of cake amongst a healthy, fairly low-carb life will be fine.

Happy birthday and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I am in the group yes, should I ask there?

That group is the biggest load of shite I’ve ever read in my life. Don’t listen to your midwife or doctor hun just us! Yay for frankenfood recipes. You’ll also be told you’re killing your baby if you dare post that.

I’d love to know why the founder hasn’t retrained as a dietician.

I digress. I would have a very, very small slice if it’s homemade and definitely don’t have any icing or fillings. There are a lot of recipes out there for lower carb cakes. Searching for keto recipes brings a lot of results.

Sadly I couldn’t tolerate any flour at all so avoided it but diet controlled is trial and error at first.

I was told by the diabetes nurse that it's continuous high levels which are dangerous. A one off high reading is a one off. 8.5 might be high but some women have seriously higher readings than that. I've had a couple over the last two months over 8 and I haven't beat myself up about it because im still learning ! My midwife told me some women don't even bother to control it, so op don't feel guilty. You're doing your best and that's more than some do!
I was also told it's the fasting readings that are problematic and usually lead to medication, what are your fasting readings like op?

dreamerkr · 19/09/2022 19:16

Thank you guys, you’re all really helpful. 😊

My fasting levels are always perfect actually, once or twice they’ve actually been lower than 4 but they’ve never been high. Usually, my post meal readings are around 6 which is all good.

Sounds similar to me.

Btw I've found a bowl of Greek yogurt with berries and pecan nuts seems to help my sweet cravings !
