Myths to help get labour moving

Mummytobe333 · 16/09/2022 13:45

With my due date approaching in a few days just wondering what people tried to get things moving and if they felt it worked?

personally don’t believe in all the myths but just thought as a bit of fun would be interesting to hear 😀
I have just been doing loads of walking to try engage babies head as still not engaged at almost 40 weeks! But nothing is working.

I had been having period-like cramps in the night. Didn't think anything of it, as it was 8 days prior to my due date, and the pains were very mild. We DTD that morning. Then my waters broke at 11am. After a very quick labour, baby popped out at 3pm. I genuinely think doing the deed helped bring on labour.

Raspberry leaf yes definitely made my contractions stronger and more frequent in early labour and I think helped speed it along.

My midwife told me to relax with a glass of organic red wine. It didn't work but I enjoyed it 😂

georgarina · 17/09/2022 18:47

I drank raspberry leaf tea and took baths with clary sage oil for a few days when my dd was nearing. Went into labour v quickly.

Eating chilli (didn't work,induced) - good luck!

Babdoc · 17/09/2022 19:09

Semen contains prostaglandins which help to ripen the cervix and encourage contractions, so having plenty of sex is a good idea. Mind you, if your baby’s head is not engaged, be careful not to be too vigorous with your DH - you don’t want your waters to break and risk a cord prolapse.

I think I tried just about everything; nothing worked for me lol

Always4Brenner · 17/09/2022 19:12

Caster oil was one. Ergot but very dangerous used to start labour off.

Scarecrowrowboat · 17/09/2022 19:15

Tried dates, spicy food, pineapple, lots of sex, raspberry leaf tea, yoga, comedy. With my first I had about 8 sweeps too.
No babies until after 42 weeks.

I drank raspberry leaf tea for a couple of days, but more like a couple of weeks, maybe 2, I think, don’t remember but Followed some recommendations I got, they said you need a build up in your body) and while I had to be induced at 40 weeks, I reacted quickly and was in a lot of pain, just from the one pessary (no drip until 24h later cause I wasn’t progressing). I was the only one from 5 women that were induced to react this way.

I wonder if this tea didn’t make it worse, safe to say I won’t touch it this time around.

Go on the swings in the park for half an hour.

miltonj · 17/09/2022 19:30

The doctor 'prescribed' for us to go out for a meal without our toddler and then have sex. Went into labour an hour after. She did also give me a 'very good sweep' that day too so maybe it was a combination! So ask for a very good sweep 😂

DNAshelicase · 17/09/2022 19:32

A sweep from a wonderful midwife with the biggest hands I’ve ever seen 😇

CristinaNov182 · 17/09/2022 19:32

I will have a sweep this time around too. Good to know to follow up with sex :)

I’ve tried sex in the week before induction and it didn’t do anything, fingers crossed doing it after sweep helps, I don’t want the pessary again.

Mummytobe333 · 18/09/2022 17:07

I am booked in for a sweep in a couple of days fingers crossed that helps!

Sweep didn’t work for me either time but using a breast pump did. However labour was very very very slow (and painful!) and I wonder if it was because the breast pump started off labour pains when I wasn’t really ready. So don’t recommend.

Where you at 40 weeks already? How long was it?

WinifridSanderson · 18/09/2022 19:32

I was overdue by about a week at that point. From first twinges to baby out it was 3 days 😬

CristinaNov182 · 18/09/2022 19:34

@WinifridSanderson a long time indeed :/

barneymcgroo · 18/09/2022 19:35

Sex worked for me... 😁

basilmint · 18/09/2022 19:37

I ate almost an entire fresh pineapple when DC2 was overdue. No idea if it was just coincidence but I went into labour a few hours later. Not great for heartburn though.....

HadEnoughOfBears · 18/09/2022 19:44

Sex worked both times for me 🙈

twoandcooplease · 18/09/2022 20:18

Sex Grin

Mummytobe333 · 19/09/2022 11:48

Sex seems to be a popular one however don’t even know if I can manage!! 😂
