Hospital appointments on 19th September (Queen's funeral, now a bank holiday)

Hi all.

Does anyone know for certain that NHS hospitals will now be shut on the 19th September due to it now being a bank holiday?

I have my 20 week scan scheduled (and also an internal scan to measure my cervix due to a difficult previous labour) and I assume it will be cancelled and re-scheduled?

They are so busy I really doubt they have the time to reschedule these things. If in doubt ring up and ask but I really don't think any appointments will change.

EverydayIsPJday · 12/09/2022 11:56

I'm wondering the same OP. I have my preop appointments for my c section next week and I am waiting to hear if it's all being put back. Praying it's not as I am feeling pretty desperate now and expect there would be some backlog. Strange circumstances though isn't it. Fingers crossed we find out soon.

Cattenberg · 12/09/2022 11:57

I have an appointment on that day and I’ve phoned up to ask. Apparently, the Trust will decide sometime today and let us know if there’s any change to our appointments.

EverydayIsPJday · 12/09/2022 12:02

Thanks @Cattenberg that's really useful. It's an awkward situation isn't it as I feel bad for asking but the knock on for missed appointments presumably will be quite significant. I can understand though that people are entitled to leave the same as everyone else.

hopingfor23 · 12/09/2022 12:10

I've just had a call from my midwife saying my appointment will go ahead as planned x

KA19911 · 12/09/2022 13:22

I work for the NHS. Likely to be a decision made by each trust, not the NHS as a whole. We are waiting for an update.

MintJulia · 12/09/2022 13:25

I hope so. I have an appt with an oncologist to prepare for a treatment the following day.

if it gets cancelled, it'll knock everyone off schedule for months.

TheFeistyFeminist · 12/09/2022 13:34

Our local Trust has said most things will happen as arranged; individual patients will be contacted directly if their appointments need to change.

peachykeenjellybean1981 · 12/09/2022 13:36

I'm booked in for surgery on the 19th. Not emergency but is something that needs doing pretty soon as it's starting to effect my health. Can't imagine if it's postponed that I'll get another date before the cut off of my pre-op appointment runs out.

Laurakiaora · 12/09/2022 14:15

Thank you all for the replies. I've messaged my midwife to ask but can sometimes take the best part of a week to get a reply.

Fingers crossed for you all that the appointments continue. I'm frustrated at having to take a forced unpaid day off work that I can sorely afford.

My Trust is cancelling all out-patient appointments and elective surgery.

I personally think this is pretty crap for the patients and think they should be given the option if they want to attend or not

Cattenberg · 12/09/2022 14:29

I think the hospitals have been put in a difficult position. If they cancel appointments, patients will be adversely affected. But if they go ahead, some staff and patients will have childcare issues due to the schools being closed.

EverydayIsPJday · 12/09/2022 15:21

I've just managed to get through to the clinic where I am having pre op tests and they have confirmed all clinics are closed on the Monday. My tests have been moved to first thing Tuesday morning thankfully so with any hope the results should be back in time for the section on the Wednesday. The maternity DAU at the hospital confirmed they were going ahead with electives on the Monday so nothing should be 'bumped' that week providing the pre ops can be done somewhere fast enough. So it really does look like it's subject to which trust you are at.

Goodluck to everyone also waiting to hear.

UseOfWeapons · 12/09/2022 15:49

We've been told to cancel all non-urgent activity and re-schedule. Our clinical team is part of cancer services, so some of us will be working, some not. All patients with appointments on the 19th have been contacted, and cancelled if their appointment is not going ahead.

It's very much up to the individual service whether they are running, so do get in touch to ask them. If texts go unanswered, go through the main service number.
Blood tests here have also cancelled all their clinics for that day, so all those patients had to be rebooked too.
Hope it's all ok for you.

AliceS1994 · 12/09/2022 16:33

I'm NHS, in our trust all non essential activity is cancelled. Generally maternity care is considered essential, planned operation can vary depending on the nature of op. It will vary by hospital- call to check as they should have a protocol to work from by now!

AliceS1994 · 12/09/2022 16:37

Just to add this isn't because we think patients shouldn't have treatment on a bank hol. We all know the situation and the last thing we want to is to deny patients treatments they have likely waited a long time for, or to make workload harder for ourselves. It's because public transport and childcare is affected. As a mother and nurse in central London, for example, I would have huge difficulty finding someone to look after my baby and travel into central London with only a week or two notice!

Mistysmom · 12/09/2022 16:41

I've just re arranged my 31 week midwife check up from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd - spoke to my midwife and she said nothing has been decided yet so to save any messing around, i made the decision to move the appointment as my other children will be home from school due to the schools closing

Laurakiaora · 12/09/2022 16:47

Thanks for the replies!

I called my maternity centre this afternoon and they're still waiting to hear whether they're staying open or not. It seems to depends on staffing levels at the moment due to those either childcare needs.

Ds was due a big multidisciplinary appointment next Monday but it has been pushed back a week. A good outcome for all in this case.

BestCatMumEver · 12/09/2022 16:57

I work for the NHS and my Trust hasn’t put out any communication yet. So we’re all waiting too.

HitsAndMrs · 12/09/2022 17:15

I'm nhs and it's our choice so you may be okay.

whatdodos · 12/09/2022 17:19

I work in outpatients OP and we've been waiting to hear all day (even the consultants didn't know if their clinics were still on!). I'd be happy to come in anyway and help out as luckily my mum has offered to have DS but if clinics are cancelled I'll appreciate the day off (don't come at me)

SnottyLottie · 12/09/2022 17:19

I work for an NHS trust and we’re waiting for official confirmation but have had an update saying only 2 week waits and fracture clinic appointments are expected to be going ahead.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 12/09/2022 17:20

My flu and covid jabs this Wednesday have been cancelled because of the funeral???? Moved to the end of the month. Guessing they’re rearranging various clinics at the GP surgery but annoying as it wasn’t even on Monday.

AsterixInEngland · 12/09/2022 18:21

Honestly everyone is in a shit place with the extra bank holiday.

If they cancel appointments, how will they manage to fit people in?

If they don’t and expect people to be in, how do they expect those nurses/consultant etc… to find childcare at such a short notice (because schools WILL be shut). Plus there is the issue of pay (working in a BH) etc….

Regardless of the answer, I expect a lot if unhappinesses
