Hospital appointments on 19th September (Queen's funeral, now a bank holiday)

Hi all.

Does anyone know for certain that NHS hospitals will now be shut on the 19th September due to it now being a bank holiday?

I have my 20 week scan scheduled (and also an internal scan to measure my cervix due to a difficult previous labour) and I assume it will be cancelled and re-scheduled?

I've been told to ring tomorrow morning to find out if my antenatal appointment is going ahead. Its an extra scan to check on an anomaly with my last scan over 2 months ago so I am anxious it is not pushed back.

I’m due to see my neurologist, I will be 26 weeks and I’m epileptic so I need to discuss birth plan and possible complications of my medication.

I got through to neurology to be told the receptionist has gone home so I’ve had to email the appointment line to find out if it will go ahead as planned.

Itsnevertheend · 12/09/2022 18:38

I had my 20 weeks scan on Monday 19th as well but had to cancel as no childcare due to schools being closed. Our hospital NHS didn’t say they were closed as I asked for an appointment later that day and she said they were fully booked as well.

NHS don’t do bank holidays , my step son nearly had an operation on Christmas Day due to a broken arm but started to heal the so they didn’t do it. But he still had to go in Christmas Eve for an X-ray and pre op incase

Yeh, it's pretty crap all round. I work in childcare and am being forced to take an unpaid day off I can ill-afford (I work term-time only so don't have spare gomodaus days I can use). Plus I would need to take the day off anyway as my daughter's school is closed.

I appreciate how much of a huge event the queen's funeral is, and that it demands a level of respect, but causing so much disruption to millions of people for the sake of someone who's died is thoughtless and unnecessary.

I really wish the Queen’s funeral could be held at the weekend. I’m not begrudging anyone an extra bank holiday, but our essential services obviously need more notice.

chickensandgorillas · 12/09/2022 22:06

Agreed, @Cattenberg !
I work in the private (medical) sector and I'll be seeing patients as planned.

My Dd has a been waiting for a follow up appointment (her last apt was in July) with the cardiology department at our local hospital and they called me this afternoon offering a choice of appointment times for Monday 19th.

I was a bit suprised that date was offered and she must of been able to tell as before I could double check she meant the 19th she said, yes we are still doing appointments that day.

Perexi · 12/09/2022 22:29

I called up this morning as my 12 week scan was on Monday and I was told it wouldn't be going ahead, luckily I got it brought forward to tomorrow so now super nervous worrying about it 🤣

The NHS do do bank holidays.. and it’s always the same staff that end up working them.. Emergency medicine and ward work continues. General OutPatient work will be cancelled (at my Trust).

Our Trust is “replying on the good will” of staff to work it. Unfortunately there is no good will left after their treatment of some patients / the government over covid and many are taking it as a day off and refusing to work now it’s a BH.. one member of staff is “looking forward to a long weekend to get the garden done”

we have staff now without childcare as schools are closing and unable to work with short notice of lack of childcare plus our Trust doesn’t allow children into scans so patients are cancelling as they can’t find childcare..

Cheshiresun · 12/09/2022 23:24

Routine/non-urgent appointments and operations being cancelled in the Trust I work in, as they would be on any bank holiday. Usual out of hours etc available.

CristinaNov182 · 13/09/2022 08:36

I had two appointments, one for my daughter, one for myself - both were cancelled.
good luck with yours

Cattenberg · 13/09/2022 12:05

Mine has been cancelled. To be fair it wasn’t urgent, but I really feel for those who’ve had maternity appointments, surgery or cancer treatment postponed.

Sparklesocks · 13/09/2022 12:30

I’m due my first midwife appointment on Monday but they said a decision hasn’t been made yet. Hoping it will stay put as they’re so busy I potentially wouldn’t be seen until after my 12 week scan if they rearrange.

Sparklesocks · 13/09/2022 13:04

Aaand it’s been cancelled. Unfortunately they can’t say when it will be rebooked for. Doesn’t fill me with much confidence it’ll be soon but what can you do I guess!

Laurakiaora · 13/09/2022 14:17

I had a call earlier to confirm my appointment is still going ahead.

Seems to be rather random between trusts about what's happening.

I had a call to say my surgery has been cancelled for Monday

Weathergirl1 · 13/09/2022 15:35

I was going to try and change the time of my community midwife appointment but have had a call from them about it this afternoon. I was offered a different day but I'm just postponing by a week as I want to see the same midwife. Doesn't actually bother me as I want to be able to watch the funeral, but I understand others might not feel the same. Sounded like they're prioritising certain clinics here and reshuffling.

Cattenberg · 13/09/2022 15:43

I felt sad and almost tearful when the Queen died, but I won’t be watching the funeral now. The complete lack of consideration for ordinary people has been astounding. I can’t believe some people have had the funerals of their loved ones cancelled at short notice, just so others can watch the funeral of someone they’ve never met on TV.

iRun2eatCake · 13/09/2022 17:39

Can't believe it!! Was inboxed via here by a journalist

Hi, I hope you are well and keeping safe. I hope you don't mind me reaching out I am Health Correspondent for the Independent. I'm looking to speak with patients who might have been impacted by surgery cancellations next Monday on the bank holiday and I saw your post. No pressure but if you would like to speak with me in confidence my details are [email protected], take care Rebecca

nocoolnamesleft · 13/09/2022 17:50

Closing the schools and childcare caused this. Most clinicians don't want to cancel, but so many of them have children and a BH has bollocksed up the childcare.

Justanoldnana · 13/09/2022 18:02

I was due to be admitted to hospital on Sunday for major surgery on Monday but this has now been put back two weeks at very short notice, entirely due to the funeral Bank Holiday. If NHS hospitals will do that to a cancer patient I'm pretty sure they can cancel Outpatient appointments. Totally gutted and I feel for you too.

begoniagal3 · 13/09/2022 18:06

My scan was booked for Monday and now has been rebooked later in the week. They have closed the outpatient ultrasound department for the bank hol.
