MIL is suggesting I should buy some kind of protector.. but others saying it's literally just water and doesn't smell etc.

Experiences and advice please!!

Agree with others that waters breaking may or may not be an issue - hugely varied - but once you’ve had a baby, chances of needing it are much greater - v heavy post birth periods, milk leaking, baby vomit etc, taking a sick child into your bed with inevitable consequences - probably a good long term investment (on all your mattresses) so get a nice non crinkly one.

Two of my three DCs were born in my living room.
Labour with DC3 was lightening fast, and I didn’t have any of my protective sheets on the sofa by the time my waters broke in a spectacular tidal wave 😬 ExH washed all the cushions covers etc, hosed down the cushions themselves and left them to dry for a few days - you’d never know!

I would buy a protector just in case.
I was induced and waters went, got changed into new pj's and slippers, went to the canteen just to watch DH and DM eat because I was nill by mouth🙄 stood up and hind waters went! No one told me about hind waters, ruined my clothes and slippers because yes blood etc is also present.

I had a protector on the bed and was glad as my waters broke in the middle of the night when I was asleep.

For the sake of a few pound the potential of having to deal with wet mattress just get 1

My waters broke in bed for both DC1 and DC3.
I woke up feeling wet!
A mattress protector is a good idea
