MIL is suggesting I should buy some kind of protector.. but others saying it's literally just water and doesn't smell etc.

Experiences and advice please!!

Mine broke when I was in bed! I put an incontinence sheet under the fitted sheet from about 38 weeks and we had a pile of towels by the bed.

Yes, waters breaking CAN seem like it only happens in films - that's what I thought, then it happened to me!

I got these:

I also had one on the sofa and one in the car. Now DD is here I'm just going to keep the rest of the pack in case of future accidents!

I had my last mattress for ten years. When I put it out for the bin men I was mortified. Split tea, water, the odd bit of blood where my period had started, baby puke. A decent mattress is incredibly pricey. I now never go without a protecter. I'm not having any more babies. Mattress protectors have come a long way since sweaty plastic sheets. I'd get one full stop and protect it at all cost's.

My waters went when I was in bed; I think I jumped up before too much went on the bed, but I was glad I had a mattress protector on and had been sleeping on a towel! It's definitely not just water; there was a fair bit of blood and general "stuff" mixed in there too, so it would have been fairly difficult to get rid of!

Plus, you may well have milk leaks whether you breastfeed or not, and they also make a smell.

For the sake of a few pounds, just get yourself one and save yourself the hassle. Or at least put a towel under your sheet.

Spectacular burst at 10cm just as MW was gearing up to break mine manually on the labour ward so she got an absolute faceful 🤣 my LO had pooped in the waters so it was meconium too and filthy. I'd definitely get a cheap mattress protector just in cases!

MrsMontyD · 07/09/2022 15:54

Mine broke getting out of bed, It was ok once it'd dried out.

MrsMontyD · 07/09/2022 15:57

After the initial gush it keeps trickling, as I recall until you've delivered, so have pads on standby.

BowiesJumper · 07/09/2022 15:58

I wore a maternity pad and slept on a bed protector thing (like the ones they put under you in the hospital), you can buy them in Asda or wherever next to the incontinence pads etc. but I actually woke up at 2am feeling a bit funny, felt a trickle between my legs so waddled to the bathroom where they went with a gush. The maternity pad was NOT sufficient 😂

theshadeofgreen · 07/09/2022 15:59

Mine broke in bed, but it wasn't a huge amount. I waddled walked to the bathroom and dropped the whole way. Maybe keep a towel by the bed to help that initial walk incase they do go when you're sleeping!

My waters exploded at the hospital just before it was time to start pushing. I don't remember if it smelt or not. It didn't happen in the early stages at home or in the car.
I wonder why TV and films pretend your waters breaking is always the first sign of labour?

RedRobyn2021 · 07/09/2022 16:03

I got a mattress protector because it is common for women to go into labour at night when it is quiet and they feel safe, also sleeping produces oxytocin.

I didn't end up needing it though, I don't actually know when my waters broke but I assume it happened during the birth but as it was in a pool we didn't notice!

ImPickleRickSpartacus · 07/09/2022 16:04

And it wasn't just water. I think I screamed because I thought my guts had fallen out onto the floorEnvy

Throwing up is always the first sign that a woman’s pregnant in movies as well despite the fact that some women don’t get morning sickness.
It’s funny how much of peoples’ expectations is based on movies when they’re so unrealistic.

It was for me, not not for everyone.

DelphiniumBlue · 07/09/2022 17:06

Mine broke when I stood up, getting out of bed, 3 times. In way that meant I time to rush to the loo and most of it went in the loo! I think it might have splashed the carpet a bit, can't really recall, but it wasn't a big deal.

howaboutchocolate · 07/09/2022 17:39

MsSquiz · 07/09/2022 13:32

With both of my children, I had my waters broken once in hospital.
But I did buy a mat to go under the sheet "just in case"

Puppy pads do the same job and you get a lot more for less money. Plus I also use them as a changing mat when changing the baby in public changing rooms or toilets so they're handy to have

I thought puppy pads weren't safe to use for babies because they have some sort of potentially harmful chemicals in them to make them smell attractive to the puppy?

Chanel05 · 07/09/2022 17:57

I was laying on my bed when my waters broke and I was laying on a giant maternity pad 😃. A friend had given me one as a just in case. As soon as I felt my waters pop in my stomach, I whipped it onto the floor and ran to the toilet. Bed all fine.

Yourteaisgettingcold · 07/09/2022 18:31

Mine did break in bed. I woke in the morning, went to turn over in bed and then felt a pop. I was able to get out of bed and waddle to the bathroom though so no ruined mattresses here.

Annonnimoouse42 · 07/09/2022 19:06

I had a bin bag under sheet, just in case. but thought I'd wet myself and leapt out of bed anyhow

ArtOfTheImpossible · 07/09/2022 19:09

I got 2 mattress protectors. Waters never broke, didn't go into labour, ended up being induced in hospital. But you could always be the exception to the rule..

GreenIsle · 07/09/2022 19:11

My waters done a very dramatic pop whilst in bed, but I managed to stand up within a few seconds before it exploded all over me the waddle to the toilet. I was wearing a pad in later pregnancy to keep an eye on blood lose or plug so they caught some of it.

Nursemumma92 · 07/09/2022 19:12

I would, mine went and contained meconium.... wouldn't have wanted that seeping into my mattress. Luckily I was walking through my front door and they went over my moppable kitchen floor!

Raindancer411 · 07/09/2022 19:23

I had the pads on the bed in case but when mine was went, it was just the fore waters. The cut in the canal before the head, and they broke the rest in the hospital. First was more of a dribble and the hind was a gush 😂 They has never seen so much

HorribleHerstory · 07/09/2022 19:30

My waters breaking was the first sign of my labour twice, so it’s not just in films. They’ve always broken spontaneously, even when they went in labour (first baby)

and once they went when was in bed. Never spilled a drop on the bed despite being fast asleep when they went.

there wasn’t that much fluid, popped, jumped up, got my PJs went, went to the bathroom, mopped up a bit, put a towel down on the upholstered chair in the bedroom and had a sit to think about what to do, chair didn’t get wet either just the towel.

I actually gave birth to the placenta on the bed twice too and no spillages there either, in that I was able to sleep in it that night.

FrozenGhost · 07/09/2022 19:42

I have no idea but surely you need a mattress protector anyway for general life? Bed is a place where bodily fluids happen. They are so good now, you can get waterproof ones that you can't hear or feel.

Doodledeedum · 07/09/2022 19:50

I've put an incontinence pad under sheet on mattress and have one for the car in case of leaking on journey to hospital
