Hi everyone,

what would you recommend wearing to leave the hospital post baby? I was thinking maternity leggings and oversized T-shirt/shirt. I’m due in 2.5 weeks so will be mid/end Sept?

Thank you. X

Sounds fine. You want something loose and comfy.
Think about what to have on your feet too. I couldn't get mine into shoes as they were quite swollen. Flip flops or crocs maybe?

Ally256 · 30/08/2022 22:15

I would say baggier trousers than leggings as you'll probably have a giant pad on and won't want anything tight around your bits! Harem pants or loose joggers.

Pollywoddles · 30/08/2022 22:16

Sounds good. My hospital recommended clothing that for at 28 weeks. I wore over the bump trackie bottoms, a maternity t-shirt and a comfy maternity jumper with trainers and it was perfect. My feet didn’t swell until I got home 😂

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 30/08/2022 22:17

I always wore a wrap dress. I could tie it pretty loosely, and didn’t have to worry about waistbands.

Pollywoddles · 30/08/2022 22:17

*that fit at 28 weeks

tealandteal · 30/08/2022 22:17

I had the baby, showered and dressed, wore those clothes while on the ward and then went home that evening. So you may wish to choose something you can feed in, if you are planning to breastfeed. That also saves you having to change when you get home.

Glo1988 · 30/08/2022 22:18

I always went in a dark colour and baggy. And take a hoody / comfy cardi, some parts of maternity units can be a bit chilly. All the best! X

muddlingthrou · 30/08/2022 22:19

I wore a maternity jumpsuit and it's was absolutely perfect. I didn't fancy leggings for awhile after birth!

maryberryslayers · 30/08/2022 22:19

Sounds perfect. Just add an over sized cardie in case its a bit chilly or you want something cosy.
Take shoes you can just slip on as you might struggle to bend if you need a section etc.
If you're planning on breastfeeding just make sure your clothes are suitable and you have a comfortable feeding bra. Even if not, take a comfortable stretchy bra as boobs could be sore.

DoItAfraid · 30/08/2022 22:22

I would go with a maternity dress. I had a c section - no pads in pants but absolutely no chance of anything like elastic or a waist around my wound.

YY to remembering shoes and considering swelling of feet. Mine BALLOONED and I went home in DH’s size 11 flip flops. I am normally a 6.

WinterRose92 · 30/08/2022 22:23

Something comfy and loose around the stomach. My son was born in December 2016, I had black jogging bottoms, a pink maternity jumper that I loved and wore way beyond ‘maternity’ and some Ugg boots cos they were the only shoes that fit my swollen feet at the time!
My daughter turns three tomorrow and it was hot that year she was born. I just wore black jogging bottoms again (but a lighter material than before) an oversized t shirt and sliders which were adjustable (again with the swollen feet!) Both times I had a comfy maternity bra on (ones with the clip on the strap so I could breastfeed - I don’t know if you’re planning to or if you want to bottle feed). Also I took quite a few pairs of black full briefs, so comfy and take quite a few maternity pads.
Just make sure you have something nice and comfy! Sorry, I realised I used the word ‘comfy’ way to much but I can’t stress that enough!
COMFY!
Best of luck with it all 😊

WaltzingWaters · 30/08/2022 22:27

I’d suggest joggers instead of leggings. I had an ecs. No way leggings we’re going on for at least a month after.
something easy to bf in (if breastfeeding).
shors that are easy to get on. I just had trainers I could easily pop on.

Allgoodthings1 · 30/08/2022 23:03

I would say take two outfits. I knew I was having a c-section so I had packed high waisted joggers and a baggy T-shirt and a loose fitted T-shirt style midi dress. I took sliders as my shoes as I didn’t want to have to attempt bending down to get shoes on. My blood pressure ended up dropping after I was up and dressed and I was sick all down my going home top. Luckily I did have something else to wear in my bag. I remember friends laughing at me for packing too much but I am sooo glad I did!

Allgoodthings1 · 30/08/2022 23:04

Also everything in black.. I’ve never been so paranoid that I was bleeding everywhere 🙈 the dress I took was khaki and I wasn’t brave enough to wear it

Fupoffyagrasshole · 30/08/2022 23:19

I has something similar to wear home but tbh I actually left in my cosy maternity pink pj bottoms as couldn’t even face having to change out of them 😂😂

Fupoffyagrasshole · 30/08/2022 23:21

I had c section too and couldn’t do shoes either like another poster said so my Birkenstocks were perfect

so pj bottoms, baggy T-shirt and Birkenstocks (never looked so stylish in me life 😂)

VanillaIce1 · 30/08/2022 23:41

With my first I went home in jeans! Second and third was loose pj bottoms but dark ones. The thought now of cramming myself into something tight makes me feel physically sick. Envy

HorribleHerstory · 31/08/2022 00:01

I have a photo of me with 1day old dc 2 wearing cream linen trousers, a pink vest and sandals. I can’t fathom what I was thinking!

But a word of warning, don’t assume the size of your middle in either direction - don’t assume it will be big or small. If I had only had maternity or big things available I’d have been hoiking pants round my ears because my middle went down like a popped balloon the moment the babies were out - saggy and wrinkly but very small, smaller than pre pregnancy. I did not expect this. I would definitely recommend a dress and a cardigan maybe. Then it doesn’t matter how far you are around.

Bootoagoose123 · 31/08/2022 08:39

I had a c section and wore a soft cotton maternity jumpsuit thing with a tshirt underneath as I couldnt handle any kind of waistband anywhere on my tummy for a few days afterwards. Did the trick perfectly and didn't have to worry about it being too tight or too loose and having to hoik it up! It took a few weeks to feel comfy in leggings after section- couldnt handle any pressure on my tummy as was v sensitive.

MotherOfDragons31 · 31/08/2022 08:48

I wore oversized Trackies, massive pad as I was bleeding, oversized too and hoodie and slippers when I left.

Aus84 · 31/08/2022 09:36

I think I was in pajama bottoms and a loose top. I really didn’t care at the time!
I always make sure Bub is dressed in something really cute though as it’s the only outfit I save when they grow up. Reminds me of how little they once were.

MooseBreath · 31/08/2022 14:13

I would go with a maternity sundress and a cardigan. Thick socks and slippers if it's cold. No way was I putting on anything with a waistband or resembling leggings/jeans for the first week!

gingertoast · 31/08/2022 14:17

I think I wore my husbands pyjama bottoms Grin

RoutineLow · 31/08/2022 14:19

I just came home in PJs and a warm cardigan. I had a c section so was a bit limited in what I could comfortably wear anyway.

SmallestInTheClass · 31/08/2022 14:20

Maternity joggers but definitely the over the bump style. Under bump style press just where you're more likely to be sore and will be impossible if you've had a section as will be in the scar. Baggy is good to accommodate the giant pad you'll be wearing. Get some good sized full fit knickers too, you'll be glad of something to 'gather you in'. Cheap cotton multipack in black. Baggy top, good idea. And any colour that won't show if you leak milk from your boobs. Grey marl is a definite no go area!
