First time mum - bedside cot

I'm a first time mum at the ripe old age of 37 and I'm wondering what bedside cots you recommend? I ordered the Next2me Original but it was such a faff so I sent it back, plus it didn't rock. Any opinions welcome, even if you don't recommend a bedside. I have no siblings so i have never looked after a baby, I'm totally clueless so any help is appreciated. Thanks

We loved our Snuzpod, there was a beautiful sweet spot where all I had to do was stick my foot out of the covers and rock him back to sleep!

ClingyClingy · 19/08/2022 08:40

I would suggest perhaps one that has the option of bedside or not

I got a snuzpod with the intention that when breastfeeding, I could roll the baby over to the cot once asleep....I wish it was that easy!

I found that bed sharing was far easier than a bedside cot while I was BF and I just kicked DH into the spare room.

However, I then had some issues and moved to FF. At that point I found it was easier to have DS further away from me. Newborns are soooo loud when they sleep! Grunting, huffing, farting 😆! So I then moved it away from the bed.

I don't think there's a right answer and you probably won't know what sleeping arrangements will work best until the baby is here so getting one that has options might be best?

I also liked the fact that the crib section of the snuzpod lifts off and I could move it downstairs. It also had a lift for reflux to lift one area up to help the baby sleep.

YesItIsI · 19/08/2022 09:02

Had a Tutti Bambino Cozee crib for my first and really liked it. He had it until 7mo when he started to hit the sides and needed more room. It tilted to help with reflux and was a good height. It was also really portable. It folded down in minutes.
Sold it between having my first and second and I regret it. We've borrowed a next to me and it's not as good. Doesn't sit close enough to the bed, quite cumbersome and the material is loud when brushed against.
In terms of baby sleeping, both kids seemed to sleep fine in it. I breastfed and found it easy enough to lean over from the bed and plonk them in.

It is annoying that next to me cribs don't sit with the mattress flush to the adults bed. But I get that it wouldn't be deemed safe so there's always a ledge of material between.

I have bought the maxi cosi lora co sleeper. I love it and it's a very decent size so baby can be in it a bit longer, it also folds down flat so easy to store or take away with you should you need to 😊

RidingMyBike · 19/08/2022 09:14

We had the Next2Me and it was fantastic. There was no need for it to rock? Why do you need it to rock?! It also has a mechanism for raising the end slightly if your baby is a bit refluxy which we found helpful when DD had a cold and was a bit snuffly.

We didn't attach it to the bed as didn't want her rolling across into our bed. Just had it right next to my side of the bed but with the mesh side of it up. It was brilliant - she slept in it every night from coming home from hospital to six months.

We also had safe places to put her down in other rooms which helped - some of them portable so could go from room to room. A Moses basket for downstairs (she grew out of this before 3 months so glad we didn't go for that for the night sleep!) and a bouncy chair was invaluable for the bathroom when you need to have a shower or in the kitchen so you can get on with stuff.

Loved our snuzpod!

ClearButtons · 19/08/2022 09:18

We also had a next to me which we thought was great! Never needed it to rock. I didn't use it with the sides down, just used it like a normal crib and she slept fine in it from about 6 weeks (we used a Moses basket before then so we could just carry her upstairs and downstairs in it as she was always asleep!)

lilroo87 · 19/08/2022 09:23

We had the tutti bambini cozee. It was perfect and quite big so lasted us over the 6 months.
Definitely worth the purchase in my opinion. Was really easy to set up and attach to our bed

inappropriateraspberry · 19/08/2022 09:28

We had a straightforward Moses basket on a stand! Was easy to scoop them out to feed in bed then put them back in. It was also handy to be able to move it around the house if needed. When they outgrew it, they went into a cot in their own room.
A Moses basket doesn't take up much room, can be put onto the bed out of the way during the day if not being used and is a lot cheaper than a bedside cot!

Oneforposy7 · 19/08/2022 10:07

Loved our snuzpod. They're great quality so mine has done the rounds with friends and family (new mattress each time obviously) and has come back to us for DC2 as good as new.

lockdownbabyx · 19/08/2022 10:21

Loved my next2me for my first! I'm Pregnant again and will be getting it out again this time. I never needed it to rock, my DS loved it. Same as PP I kept the mesh side up and just had it next to my bed, he was content and happy in that for 7 months. I think it's also beneficial for it not to rock, as it made the transition from the next2me to his cot a lot easier. Also as PP said, the option to tilt it was a godsend, especially if you have a very refluxy babe.

Danikm151 · 19/08/2022 10:26

I had a cot bed and put the moses basket in that the first few months. I’m a really energetic sleeper so didn’t feel safe having baby right next to the bed especially if I flung the quilt over or kicked out etc.
cot was in the same room and only moved out of the moses basket when it was too hot one day but baby was used to being in the cot so the transition was ok. Then when he moved into his own room he was used to his cot.

PlacesIGo · 19/08/2022 10:27

I had a next2me which was great - but mine DID rock?? Perhaps a different model. Anyway it definitely wasn't a faff. And we never used the rock setting anyway.

I became a mum at 40 op so don't feel the need to justify your age. It's very common now!

wishuponastar1988 · 19/08/2022 10:30

We have the tutti bambini cozee which is great. Easy to put together and tilts if needed. It doesn't rock though but haven't felt that's been needed to be honest. Baby is happy with Ewan the sheep attached playing white noise and it drifts her off if she gets unsettled

Loulou1712 · 19/08/2022 13:20

I had a next to me with DD1 and DD2 and will reuse this time for DS1, I found it really good for cosleeping as a sort of escape bit if they rolled so they wouldn't fall out of bed, but honesty both girls hated not being near me so didn't sleep in it that much 🙈
If I had my time again I'd look at the halo, I like the way you can push it out of the way to get in and out of bed and swing it over your bed to get baby in and out.
I found getting out of bed difficult with it strapped to the bed esp with DD1 where I had alot of switches, you kind of have to scoot down the bed before swinging your legs out,or get onto all 4s and crawl 🙈 motherhood is so glamorous!! x

dmask · 19/08/2022 13:51

our baby didn’t sleep well in the next to me or snuzpod. We used a Moses basket next to the bed, then the cot in our room when they grew out of it. They had the best night sleep when we put them in the cot - 10 undisturbed hours at 10 weeks old!!! Second that babies are very noisy, we put them in their own room at 9 months and we all slept well then.

Goodnewsday · 19/08/2022 14:23

You get so many now that rock, vibrate, sing songs etc and I just felt that doing that would only lead to doing more of that and personally for us that wouldn’t have worked if baby was waking multiple times every night needing it back on. We went with the simple snuzpod which was great and I’d use it again. We got the snuzpod 3 rather than the 4 as the 3 still has the side that can be taken down, not that we often used it but I had a csection so it was a bit easier. It was the same with all these fancy swings, I went for the most basic baby chair from mamas and papas as I didn’t want to have to rely on a swing to get him to sleep and wanted him to know he had to go into a boring flat bed and sleep. Luckily he was in agreement with this and has slept ridiculously well 😊

maggiebun · 19/08/2022 14:42

Thanks everyone for your help, I think i need to chose between the snuzpod and a moses basket. I don't intend on breastfeeding (please don't comment on this or judge), so maybe a moses basket would suffice? Theres a lot to learn, and i know a lot of this comes with experience so i am truly
grateful for you help ladies xx

I loved my next to me. I couldn't figure out how to lower the side, but I never needed to either.

I loved that it could be higher at one end, amazing for my refluxy baby. Didn't matter to me that it didn't rock.

@Carrieonmywaywardsun what a bloody stupid and ignorant comment. Co sleeping is perfectly safe when done correctly.

Nope, perfectly safe, not 'stupid'

Maybe try reading up on it

No judgement OP, hope you find the right one for you

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 19/08/2022 14:59

We went for a moses basket as i didn't want anything close to bed sharing. Worked perfectly, and then we moved DD in the moses basket into her cot when she wrnt in her own room, then took outthe moses basket into the cot, made the transition much easier

maggiebun · 19/08/2022 15:08

@Youcancallmeirrelevant I like that idea. Im not the best sleeper at all, i have to sleep in the spare room most nights as noises or light make me have bad insomnia, so for my own health i would like to transition to their own room as soon as i can, i know this will need to be after 6 months though

I personally wouldn’t go for one that rocks. I found it incredibly annoying that it rocked every time I touched it and moved when I lent over to get the baby. It often disturbed them as it would get knocked as I got out of bed. We had a next to me the second time and it was much better!
