First time mum - bedside cot

I'm a first time mum at the ripe old age of 37 and I'm wondering what bedside cots you recommend? I ordered the Next2me Original but it was such a faff so I sent it back, plus it didn't rock. Any opinions welcome, even if you don't recommend a bedside. I have no siblings so i have never looked after a baby, I'm totally clueless so any help is appreciated. Thanks

Another vote for the Snuzpod.

Very well made, good quality, looks lovely and fit well attached to my side of the bed. Easy access if breastfeeding too.

We are using it for baby no2 too👍🏼

@Youcancallmeirrelevant I like that idea. Im not the best sleeper at all, i have to sleep in the spare room most nights as noises or light make me have bad insomnia, so for my own health i would like to transition to their own room as soon as i can, i know this will need to be after 6 months though

We transitioned our youngest at 4 months. It was right for us at the time

We have a Tutti Bambini Cozee. We don’t use it as a next to me as I had a c-section and a next to me is near impossible if that happens - for starters you need to be able to shuffle to the end of the bed to get out - and I now prefer to get out of bed to breastfeed in a chair overnight.

We bought the Air version so mesh windows on both sides & supplied with caster wheels and rocking bars. We don’t use the rocking bars but do use the caster wheels, it’s useful to be able to roll it around. It also folds down quickly to a travel cot.

I heard of a bedside cot called the UltimateBedSideCot2000000000000

Heard its exceptional and is worth the asking price

kidshealth.org/en/parents/cosleeping.html bed sharing/ co sleeping is a cause of death for so many babies. It's a fact.

lockdownbabyx · 19/08/2022 16:05

@Carrieonmywaywardsun yes some babies have unfortunately died from bed sharing... because it wasn't done safely. Many babies also sadly died in cots, Moses baskets etc if safe sleep isn't practiced. Both are equally safe if done correctly.
Sharing a bed isn't unsafe, is lose blankets, pillows etc as well as many other things which are the issue. Read up on safe sleep, you will learn alot 👍🏼.

Thanks everyone for your help, I think i need to chose between the snuzpod and a moses basket. I don't intend on breastfeeding (please don't comment on this or judge), so maybe a moses basket would suffice? Theres a lot to learn, and i know a lot of this comes with experience so i am truly
grateful for you help ladies xx

I'm also a first time mum at the age of 37 😀 congratulations!
I used a Moses basket next to the bed with DD and used to carry it to the living room when she napped there when she was small. When she out grew the Moses basket I moved her straight to her cot with no issues. I also chose to FF from the start so no judgement from me, I absolutely think it was the best choice for me and my DD

Fortuny · 19/08/2022 16:17

Did anyone find the tutti bambini wobbly? I've bought one second hand in fantastic condition but it definitely moves off you manhandle it enough. Wondering if that'll be fixed when attached to the bed

Porridgeislife · 19/08/2022 16:21

@Fortuny Not at all, ours is fine. It was one of the reasons I chose it as the reviews said it was one of the most stable cots.

Margo34 · 19/08/2022 16:23

Another vote for the Next2Me original! So easy to attach to bed, use stand alone and to wash the component fabric parts.
More space than a Moses basket so won't be grown out of as quickly either. Hands down winner!

Bella9992 · 19/08/2022 16:27

I personally hated our next2me, our DD used to slam her legs down and the whole thing would rock and creak. It was the next2me dream.
I'm definitely looked for a one with more sturdy legs this time to avoid it!

RidingMyBike · 19/08/2022 17:10

You still have to scoop them up to feed whether BF or FF so I don't think a Moses basket would have been easier for a FF baby? Mine was combi-fed but slept thru from six weeks so I barely did any night feeds when I had to scoop her out of it anyway. I did the dream feed sat up in an armchair in her nursery before bringing her into our room, then the first thing in the morning feed I'd pick her up out of it once I'd been to the loo.

Co-sleeping is personal choice - understand the risks and how to make it safer if you want to do it. It can never be as safe as them sleeping separately but Lullaby Trust recognised that parents would do it anyway so provide advice to minimise the risk. There is a lot of pressure to co-sleep but if you don't want to, that's fine. We were determined DD would never sleep in our bed and she never has, so it isn't something you have to do.

We transferred her into her own room at six months and we all slept a lot better after that - she was very grunty and farty. She slept well but disturbed us a lot! It was a lot better once she was out of our room.

Twizbe · 19/08/2022 17:31

I never had a Moses basket for my babies.

I had big babies (over 9lbs) and it would have lasted 5 mins before they grew out of it.

Also (and this is a very personal opinion) I've yet to see one that isn't fugly.

If you've got a carry cot with your pram you can use that for naps or overnight sleeping at first if you want.

Twizbe · 19/08/2022 17:33

Purely anecdotal this, but the formula fed babies I know (including my own who was combi fed) have tended to be more refluxy. It can really help them to have their head lifted a bit so having something you can tilt slightly is a great help.

Just get the Moses basket. You can get them second hand for free - people always give them away to save room. Then just get your own mattress etc. it was so handy to be able to pop them in it in any room - we got two so we didn’t have to carry them up and down the stairs, then gave them away afterwards. I also felt the need to buy everything in advance, but don’t rush and we wasted a lot of money buying things we didn’t need - the excitement is overwhelming! We used the Moses basket for ages which will give you a lot of time to decide on what works for you. Also second hand for any snuzpod type thing etc. you use it for such a small amount of time, it’s really not worth it and they’re usually in pristine condition as a newborn doesn’t wreck them! If I had my time again (which I hope to!), I would buy those things secondhand and use the money for nice treats later when they/you appreciate it (dinners out, cleaner, etc.).

Both of ours went into their own room at around 4 months. We all slept better for it!

Loulou1712 · 25/08/2022 07:46

@maggiebun only problem with a moses basket is they'll often be outgrown by 6-10 weeks, so where will baby sleep then until they go into their own room?

If you'll have room for their cot in your room then this could work.
DD1 was pulling herself up at 3-4months so we had to move into her cot then for safety anyway 🙈

maggiebun · 25/08/2022 07:58

I have ended up being given a next2me and i think for the few months it'll be used, il just stick with that and get a moses basket for downstairs. Thanks everyone!
