I’m 34 and my partner is 27 I feel a lot of pressure on my shoulders to start having kids. I want to start by the time I’m 35 as I met my partner later in life. I feel like my family think I’m too old. Am I too old this is really getting me down as I really want kids

No. Had my first 36 and second 38 - not too late.
only bit of advice I have is I feel really ‘old’ as a mum now 12 years later. Something to ponder on.

Following! Just dropping by to give support as I’m the same as you. 🍀

I'm 38 and pregnant with my 4th and will be 39 when I am due.

I had my first at 18 second at 29 third at 36 and I have to say I feel really old this time and would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about how I will be afterwards. I didnt feel this way at 36. I wouldn't be pregnant again at this age but we lost our third child during pregnancy.

So my advice don't wait to long as you want to have energy to enjoy your pregnancy and having your baby.

Canigoonroblox · 13/08/2022 22:51

The one thing you can’t change is your age so don’t worry about it. I had my first son at 38 second at 42, would’ve preferred to have been younger but that’s just how it happened.

Lilbunnyfufu · 13/08/2022 22:55

Not to late to have kids.
I had my 3rd last year age 36
Currently pregnant with 4th age 37

Dd is 15 and Ds is 5

AceSpades54321 · 13/08/2022 22:55

The risks of Down’s syndrome or genetic problems increases each year….

If you really want kids you should start sooner rather than later

Fertility drops significantly from 30 and takes a nose dive between 35-42

That's a gross generalisation.

mondaytosunday · 13/08/2022 22:58

I had mine at 41 and 43, i have several friends who had kids in their 40s - 45 and 46 being the two oldest (all conceived naturally).

allboysherebutme · 13/08/2022 22:58

No. My mum had my sister at 37 we all adore her. X

PollyRockets · 13/08/2022 22:58

@Whataretheodds

Scientific facts are now gross generalisations now?

FYI -
"A woman's peak reproductive years are between the late teens and late 20s. By age 30, fertility (the ability to get pregnant) starts to decline. This decline becomes more rapid once you reach your mid-30s. By 45, fertility has declined so much that getting pregnant naturally is unlikely for most women."

TinaTeaspoons · 13/08/2022 23:02

Mid to late thirties for first child is completely normal in this day and age.

ThunderSocks · 13/08/2022 23:02

It's not too old! I had my first at 36, second at 38 and third at 40. If I could have, I would have had them younger, but I didn't meet my partner until my 30s. It is true that getting/staying pregnant can be more difficult the older you get, so if it's something you and your partner want, I'd start sooner rather than later.

Cakecakecheese · 13/08/2022 23:12

I'm 41 and my first child is 2 weeks old. I had to have IVF but I had known fertility issues and would have needed it even if I was in my 20s.

Phoebesgift · 13/08/2022 23:58

Had my first aged 36 and second at 39. Both times I was pregnant after the first month of trying. Nowhere near too old!

sweetnoodle · 14/08/2022 00:12

Of course not Hmm

TempsPerdu · 14/08/2022 00:19

Definitely not too old - I had DD at 37, all went smoothly and and I was only the 3rd oldest in my NCT group. I’d get going soonish though, especially if you think you’ll want more than one - we knew we’d be happily one and done, but secondary infertility can be a real issue and age won’t be on your side.

Merryclaire · 14/08/2022 07:20

I hope it’s not too old as am having my first at 40. I’m the oldest in my NCT group. I do have some regrets about not having started younger but can’t turn back the clock so have to make the most of it now.

Drevere · 14/08/2022 07:40

No!
For me yes. I had a personal cut off of 35. But everyone's circumstances are different. A lot of my friends didn't start until 40. Not too old of that's what you want!

Yazoop · 14/08/2022 07:43

It is not too old! But if you really want kids, recommend having at least having a fertility MOT soon and understanding more about your ovarian reserve. While lots of people have no issues having kids in their late thirties and even early forties, it is very individual. Nearly all of my friends who are parents had babies at different points in their thirties - mostly without much issue, though sometimes took a bit more time than expected to fall pregnant.

As someone going through IVF at 38, after a good couple of years trying naturally, it would’ve given me a bit more time if I’d started earlier (although I like would have still faced issues). Just don’t assume it’ll be easy to conceive and plan from an informed position.

IdealisticThinker · 14/08/2022 07:48

I'm 36 and starting trying now, 35 isn't too late but fertility definitely tends to go down from 30 onwards though I've learned the nose dive seems to be 36/37 onwards. This is based on national averages though so there are always those exceptions. I also met my partner later in life.

My advice for what its it's worth, it's your life, do what suits you best not anyone else.

CurlyNo2 · 14/08/2022 08:13

Absolutely not! I’ve been with my husband for 20 years! We had our first baby 6 years ago when I was 32 and due our second one in November when I’ll be 38.

The only different between my 1st and 2nd pregnancy is that I have much less energy now than before.

Peasplease12 · 14/08/2022 08:15

I conceived at 34 and will be 35 when baby is born. We’d ideally like two children so yes, in a perfect world we would have started a bit earlier, but we didn’t meet until our 30s so that’s just how it goes.

LilacSky95 · 14/08/2022 08:28

Not too old but egg quality does decline with age, so chances of having a baby with defects, downs or autism etc is higher than it would be in your 20s or early 30s

Rowthatboat · 14/08/2022 08:29

Yezi · 13/08/2022 22:34

I have two older sisters who started their families at 30 but found partners earlier on in life then I did they constantly tell me I should have settled in stead of living abroad like i did

Might they be a bit jealous?

The risks of Down’s syndrome or genetic problems increases each year….

This table isn't strictly true as I'm 38 & pregnant & my screening results came back 1 in 7200 for down's syndrome & 1 in 8000 for the other 2.
