Paying for scan photos

So from the 1st sept our trust will be making you pay for scan photos even for the 12 week and 20 week scans.

I'm shocked by this as with my first baby two years ago it was never a thing

Do all of the trusts charge??

Well the hospital can just not tell you and you can pay £50 to have it done privately. Why shouldn't the NHS benefit?

Because ultimately we are paying for our care - it’s not actually free unless you don’t work.

It’s a lot of money if the scanner is already sitting there on the information and it’s not costing any extra resources.

It’s basically saying: ‘I know a big secret of yours and am not going to tell you until you hand over £50.’

Plus, they aren’t always sure anyway.

Thankfully my local hospital didn’t have this policy. They didn’t charge for pics either, even though the signs said they did.

Ours charged £5 for scan photos, however we didn't pay for any and we were given free scan photos at the 12 and 20 week scans, as well as all the growth scans. We were happy to pay, but all seemed to awkward/unhappy to take any money.

Regarding postnatal wards, I was on one in May after having DS1. It was absolute hell and I was there for 2 days before they moved me to a side room as I wasn't coping. My experience on the ward genuinely makes me reconsider having a 2nd. The women in my NCT group all gave birth in a different hospital and had private rooms and much more pleasant post-birth experience.

I'm one of the lucky ones whose local hospital's postnatal ward consists of individual en suite rooms. Heaven!

I've never been charged for scan photos. There's a machine in the waiting room where you can buy more, but everyone gets freebies.

Postnatally, I've been on a ward bay both times. It's not so bad. Hardly a hotel experience, but tolerable. Plus I'd already spent a week+ on the antenatal ward, so being on postnatal meant it wasn't long until home.

Yup, have always had to pay for mine here in middle of UK, £5 for pics. They also won't do it if you bring coins, has to be a £5 note.

awwbiscuits · 05/08/2022 08:58

We were charged £5 a picture in 2016/17!

FAQs · 05/08/2022 08:59

Ours charged 18 years ago

On the website/in the waiting room of my trust it says 2x pics are free at the 12 week and £8 for 4 or £15 for 8 at the 20. I had my 12 week and the sonographer said she would chose a photo and bring it out to us, I said oh do you get 2 (as per website/signs and my sister who recently had a baby) and she said no just 1. I treasure the photo as some one who's been TTC for 8 years, 1st pregnancy

GodspeedJune · 05/08/2022 20:33

Ours charge £5 per photo and no discount for multiples. At the 12 week scan I asked for seven, the sonographer must have taken pity on me as she said to pay for two and she’d put the rest in my folder for me.

They should be free IMO, they’re not just a nice souvenir to show grandparents, it can be all you have to remember your baby by if the pregnancy comes to a sad end.

LilacPoppy · 05/08/2022 20:34

Mine started charging about ten years ago but stopped since covid.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 05/08/2022 20:37

Mine did in 2008 and 2011. They did free ones when covid was bad and partners not allowed.

Leggingslife · 05/08/2022 20:40

I didn't pay in 2018

BeeVeeF · 15/08/2022 14:19

Mine don’t. We were surprised because we thought we would have to pay.

Cakecakecheese · 15/08/2022 14:24

We had to pay. At my 12 week scan I paid 8 quid for photos that looked like a scene from Aliens 😂

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/08/2022 14:27

I paid in 2019 - can't remember how much though!

Bella9992 · 15/08/2022 15:12

Mime does and did back in 2020 when I had my DD.

MrsR87 · 15/08/2022 15:24

My trust has charges but I’m not sure how long for. There were signs about paying when I had my first in 2020, but it’s a touch screen cashless thing so was not used during the pandemic, so I got those free. With my current pregnancy (36 weeks) they are now using the matching as I’ve seen it being used but for both my regular scans, the machine was out of order, so I still got them for free. The sonographer also gave me one for free at a growth scan my husband couldn’t attend due to childcare. They cost £5 but they decrease the more you buy.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. Pictures are not the primary focus of a scan, the measurements of baby etc are what they are focused on. If the NHS can claw some money back from an added extra, on top of the medical necessities, I’m all for it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/08/2022 15:25

They charged 21 years ago in London when I had ds. £3 a photo iirc.
