Paying for scan photos

So from the 1st sept our trust will be making you pay for scan photos even for the 12 week and 20 week scans.

I'm shocked by this as with my first baby two years ago it was never a thing

Do all of the trusts charge??

Donations in 2000 (though we only got 20wk scans then in my area)
Donations in 2009 and 2010
£5 a pic with tickets from a machine in 2019 and 2020/1

And yeah 4 to a ward. Hideous. I was very thankful I didn't have to stay in with 2, 4 and 5.

Kindofcrunchy · 04/08/2022 18:53

So this is weird. We had to pay £5 for one photo with our firstborn. This time round we got 3 photos for free?! Same hospital, different sonographer. Not sure how they decide whether to charge or not!

CornishGem1975 · 04/08/2022 18:55

I had to pay for mine, with the correct money, in 2005 so no not unreasonable at all. It's not for medical reasons, it's 'nice to have' picture so why should the NHS fork out for it? You don't have to buy it.

DappledThings · 04/08/2022 18:58

Ours always had a machine where you paid and were meant to show the receipt but we were never asked for it. I wasn't going to bother but DH insisted. I have no idea if he actually kept the photos anywhere in the end. I couldn't ever get my head round wanting prints from a medical procedure. Never felt like a photo of my baby to me.

Bodice · 04/08/2022 19:01

Most sonographers are uncomfortable with charging. All are different of course. One day a baby might pose nicely and they can’t resist taking the odd extra one. I know our department has got more lax about charging since Covid. And the machine always seems to be broke. As health professionals we don’t really like dealing with money.

Lovebeingamummy2 · 04/08/2022 19:01

Where I'm from it's always been £5 a photo!!

CurbsideProphet · 04/08/2022 19:02

Our trust charges £5. You have to pay at a machine and show the receipt at reception to collect. However we've been lucky as I'm having extra scans and have just been given the photos by the sonographer or specialist midwife.

DappledThings · 04/08/2022 19:04

I was offered extra ones too at extra scans. Felt too awkward to say no thanks so I accepted them for an easy life!

I'm not in the UK (in Ireland) but to get a 20 week scan we had no option to go private at a cost of over €250. Only a 12 week scan was part of our free care. How much are you being charged?

they aren't charging for the scan but for the photos

2020firsttimemum · 04/08/2022 20:14

Just to clarify, I'm not saying they should be free. I'm happy to pay for them, I was just surprised that they charge when I'd been so oblivious to the fact that it was the norm!

Same as the ward thing! I couldn't of imagined being with other ladies and babies just after having a section so when I found this out I was very grateful to of had my own room and bathroom!

My trust always says they charge but I have never once paid and Iv had 7 scans so far and always been given a picture.

grey12 · 04/08/2022 21:29

Mine is turning 2 and I had to pay 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wish I could have paid for more but they only gave me one photo

Merryclaire · 04/08/2022 22:59

Ours used to charge £5 for scan pictures and £50 to find out the sex.
They stopped charging at some point between DC2 and DC3. I think they should bring it back tbh.

£50 to find out the sex?! That’s immoral!

Well the hospital can just not tell you and you can pay £50 to have it done privately. Why shouldn't the NHS benefit?

Read as seven sons ...

AprilRae91 · 04/08/2022 23:33

Yes they charge £5 per photo

DeePlume · 04/08/2022 23:46

I had to pay in 2016!

IrisM22 · 04/08/2022 23:50

No charge here (Glasgow), and plenty photos given at both the 12 and 20 week scans for both my babies. This pregnancy I've had to have additional scans throughout due to gestational diabetes and they have not offered photos at all at these extra scans, they just print what they need for my file (absolutely understandable).

PinkButtercups · 04/08/2022 23:54

Ours did. 4 for £10. Now it's free.

Timide · 04/08/2022 23:54

At ours they charge you if they are in the mood. No rules set, completely random

womaninatightspot · 04/08/2022 23:54

I was charged with my eldest back in 2010. Wasn’t charged for twins though as apparently they don’t charge for multiples: that might be a local thing though. I had fortnightly scans too from 14 weeks so lots of photos.

PinkButtercups · 04/08/2022 23:54

Forgot to mention this was in 2019 and they've only just issued them free in 2022.

2020firsttimemum · 04/08/2022 18:21

So mad how different they all are!

I only found out a week or two ago as well that when you give birth, you go onto a ward with x amount of other ladies and their babies. Or normally anyway
The hospital I had my son in, and will again, doesn't have that and you get your own private room. So again I was baffled that it wasn't the case for all hospitals!

Yep! I went onto a ward about 3/4 hours after DS's birth. Luckily wasn't on there long and discharged about 12 hours later.

Sniffypete · 05/08/2022 00:15

I had to pay 12 years ago. It had to be the exact amount in cash.

CoalCraft · 05/08/2022 06:46

There's a big sign up in my antenatal clinic saying it's £2 per print and yet I get handed multiple for free every time (and I've had many scans!)
