Hi Lulumama,
This isn't an acual birth question but I'm a bit worried and can't get in to see my midwife until Wednesday so thought you'd be the best person to ask. I'm 24 weeks pregnant.

The past few days my knickers keep suddenly being soaking wet. It's not discharge or anything like that, it's just loads of water. i change them about 3 times a day. It also smells weird.

Also, I was making the bed and I had a sudden really sharp bump pain. It cramped and it felt awful. So I rested and it went. The next day i was walking along and got what i thought was a stitch but it was so bad in the bottom of my bump I couldn't even walk anymore. The next time I tried to walk I got the same awful cramp in another pain. It finally moved to my left side and got worse and worse. Even paracetamol wouldn't touch it. I spoke to my midwife who sort of laughed and said everyone gets pains like these. however, it's got worse and worse and feels like the whole of one side is bruised and I've got what feels like the worst period pain ever. It's constant. Especially if I move at all or try to lift anything. Even light things. My bumps really tender to the touch. Sometimes it goes really hard and crampy too.

Overall, I'm worried about the pains and I'm worried about the water thingy. Do you know if I'm worrying unnecessarily? Or what it coluld be?

Anyone have any advice?

Hi, I think Lulumama is about but if not perhaps you should give your doctor/hospital a call? Just to be on the safe side.....hope you are ok..

Snaf · 19/01/2008 15:08

Mumblesmummy - you need to phone your labour ward now. It is quite possibly nothing but a hard, tender bump and constant cramping pain are things that need to be checked out. Don't wait to see your mw - ring delivery suite and talk to someone asap, please.

Are you feeling the baby move as normal?

madmouse · 19/01/2008 15:09

If you even think you may be leaking waters at 24 weeks I suggest you go to hospital to have delivery suite check you over. You cannot wait until Wednesday to be seen, because if it is waters you risk infection. They won't mind, in fact if you ring and tell them you think waters are leaking they will tell you to come in straight away. Please do not wait until after the weekend, as you have waited a few days already.

Let us know what happens.

By the way your pain sounds like bad ligament pain or SPD. Labour pains come and go they are not constant.

lulumama · 19/01/2008 15:11

hi there

my first response to anyone who is worried or thinks something is happening in their pregnancy that should not be happening is call the midwife immediately.

gushes of water that soak your knickers could be two things, urine or amniotic fluid. either way, you must be checked to determine which it is

amniotic fluid can be a different colour to urine and smells different.

the pains might be a combination of Braxton hicks, round ligament pain, and SPD. all of which can give you pain, discomfort and tendereness.

the point is that you are in pain, you are suffering and you are concerned. i suggest you call labour ward and speak to someone, say you are worried about the fluid loss and pain and would like to be checked out.

hopefully, all is well, but you need a qualified person to look at you, examine you and find out what is going on

take care, and let us know how you get on

Snaf · 19/01/2008 15:13

Lulu, when I read this thread I was thinking of starting a strongly-worded thread along these very lines. Would you join in and back me up if I did?

carmenelectra · 19/01/2008 15:19

HI mumbles,

At 24 wks you shouldnt be leaking amniotic fluid(waters) but it does sometimes happen prematurely. What you need to do it put a pad straight on if you are not already wearing one so the midwives and doctors can see exactly what you are losing.

Y ou need to ring labour ward and get yourself seen today, dont leave it.keep your pad on and take any pads you have used.

Amniotic fluid doesnt usually smell strongly unless theres an infection, so it may be urine but you need to get it checked. ESPECIALLY as you have pain.

It may be a urine infection causing the pain and you may be leaking urine but please dont leave it. Pain and loss of fluid always needs to be checked. Its really important.
Dont worry.

lulumama · 19/01/2008 15:20

yes, definitely.

carmenelectra · 19/01/2008 15:24

Hope shes gone to the hospital.

FlllightAttendant · 19/01/2008 16:00

She said her midwife just laughed at her????

LOVEMYMUM · 19/01/2008 16:01

Hi mumbles. I hope you got checked out.

I'm sorry that your midwife laughed - did you give her enough information about the pain?

lulumama · 19/01/2008 16:01

i hope she spoke to a different MW today then, and mentioned the fluid.. i thought she had spoken to her about the pain.. also if she phones labour ward it is likely to be a different MW

FlllightAttendant · 19/01/2008 16:03

Me too lulu. I really hope everything is alright

Mumblesmummy · 19/01/2008 17:39

Hi everyone,

i read everyone's msgs before and thought I should go straight to hospital so I phoned and they said to go straight in. They were so good. I saw a good midwife this time and she got baby's heartbeat straight away. They said if it carries on to go back, and they did some swabs. They've booked me in for an emergency scan on Monday. They said they'll be able to tell then how much fluid is around the baby.

I feel sooo much better for going and getting checked. Thanks so much everyone because I wouldn't have gone if I hadn't come and here and everyone said to.

lulumama · 19/01/2008 17:41

glad you were taken seriously and got checked out, and are being scanned...obviously if it gets worse before monday,go straight back, as they have advised

Mumblesmummy · 19/01/2008 17:43

Thanks Lulu, you're a star. I've to take co-codamol too, so I'll get some in the morning.

FlllightAttendant · 19/01/2008 18:05

Oh, let us know how you get on MM!

mehdismummy · 19/01/2008 18:10

i wish i could have known you whilst i was pregnant lulu

lulumama · 19/01/2008 18:12

you ladies are all very kind

MN is a wonderful place, and i have learnt a lot from it, and posters like Snaf, marslady, klaw, victoriansqualor, mintpurple, daisymoo, pruners etc are all so great to have here on pregnancy and childbirth

mehdismummy · 19/01/2008 18:20

wish id known about mn when i first fell pregnant. All that worry when at a click of a button people who dont know you help. It has been a really difficult time for me recently and just having mn here has stopped me sinking deeper. Flllight even made me cry by her generousity. Op good luck keep us posted

VictorianSqualor · 19/01/2008 18:23

Sorry to hear about your MW mumblesmummy, make sure you rest as much as possible betwen now and your scan and try not to worry too much.
If your waters have broken they can do plenty of things to keep baby safe in there and will do as much as possible.

It is quite common to have pains, I'm 28weeks and gettign them all over the place at one time or another but as already said, it's when you don't feel they are right you should get it checked out straight away, a labour ward would much rather see an over-anxious mum-to-be than someone who has come in too late and is in trouble.

carmenelectra · 19/01/2008 18:39

Oh glad you got sorted mumbles. Sounds like they did all the right things when you got seen.

LOVEMYMUM · 19/01/2008 21:20

Hi mumbles - glad you got checked out.

I would make a note of the midwife's name who laughed at you and maybe raise the matter with her boss. If you gave her all the information that you gave us in your post, then she ABSOLUTELY should have told you to go to hosp to be checked out (and that's from DH - a medical person).

carmenelectra · 19/01/2008 21:44

I suspect she wasnt given all the information when she laughed. Maybe was just told about the pain. No midwife would tell a 24 wk pregnant woman that was normal. Often pains can be reprted vaguely though.
