Argh! Pram Nightmare!

Hi!

I'm due my 2nd child in June and my son will be 2 years old just after. So I need a twin pushchair.

I've disregarded the idea of a side-by-side style as doorways etc. just look to hard to navigate and the seats never look wide enough for my son to sit in comfortably (he's quite broad). I also dislike a lot of the bulkier looking ones where they sit behind each other as they look too heavy to push over rough ground and I do a lot of dog walking.

So, I thought the Phil and Teds was my only really option. Which looks great for pushing and walking the dog - but I know my son wouldn't like being stuck underneath when baby gets older and I'm desperate for a pushchair where he faces me!

Then I found the iCandy Pear... which I can tell is going to be hard to find one in a store to have a look at! It seems just what I'm looking for although sounds a bit heavy. Wondered if anyone had one and used it with similar aged children? On any pictures I can find it looks like the toddler wont have much room no matter which way I put the baby in...and would it be possible to use a carry cot so baby could lie flat, with toddler in a seat?

I know I've got ages yet to decide but it's a nightmare trying to find something that will keep son happy as well as be suitable for baby!

The baby seat faces the pram pusher so you can see them all the time.

nobodysfool · 24/01/2009 23:18

Not flat but as with other travel systems you use the car seat for the baby hang on i will try and find some photos....

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 24/01/2009 23:39

looks like a very clever design, but not sure about the car seat bit, I like little babies lying flat.

what am I thinking....I already have my perfect double in the P&T

sasamaxx · 25/01/2009 10:22

I suppose you have to decide what you are willing to compromise on...all of them require some sort of compromise.

I decided that bulky annoyingness was less of a problem than lack of recline-ability.

How many new words did I invent there? LOL

nappyaddict · 25/01/2009 13:34

P&T vibe or Bebecar Vector Duo definitely. or this

my friend has this but it is side by side.

nappyaddict · 25/01/2009 13:38

The ABC and Zoom are only suitable from birth with a carrycot. The problem is they may outgrow they carrycot before they get to 6 months. Something worth thinking about if you like little babies to be lying as flat as possible.

laumiere · 25/01/2009 16:48

Hi, don't know where you're based but John Lewis on Oxford St in London have the iCandy Pear range to look at. I didn't bother as DS is too tall for it.

thehairybabysmum · 25/01/2009 20:38

Do you not like my one?? Tis fab, honest!

nobodysfool · 25/01/2009 20:40

Mines better.

thehairybabysmum · 25/01/2009 21:06

you're probably right....i wanted to buy one of those from Target when we went to the US last Sep. DH having none of it though...i have a pram habit, so he was seriously not impressed that i even suggested it!!

I think your's is fab for now when i have a young toddler plus 3 yr old but mine better for newborn as it is a proper flat pram for baby.

Does yours fold up nice and small? It looked like it did which is good.

neolara · 25/01/2009 21:19

Jane powertwin is good. Baby can lie flat and toddler can see fine. Easy to push but bulky to fold up. It retains its value well on ebay as well.

kathryn77 · 25/01/2009 21:40

Ds was 2 exactly when DS2 arrived and P&T been godsend. DS1 likes to be underneath for some reason and it is so good as can be pushed with one hand easily & is thin so goes through doors. Also when DS1 wants to walk, its easy to get him out & still have a thin buggy.

Friend got a double buggy which faced forward and had a carry cot, first wheels, and struggeled to go thru doors.

tsom · 25/01/2009 21:58

had a mountain buggy terrain double, only place it couldn't get round was woolworths (obviously not a concern now). Did a fair amount of fell walking with it too, indestructible. dd1 was 2.5 when ds2 born and quite chunky but fitted in it fine until he was 4 and walking everywhere. You can get a carrycot but alas no rear facing seat option.

nobodysfool · 25/01/2009 22:07

hairybabiesmum- it folds up lovely and small it's only about 8cm longer than my old graco travel system.
It's great fun though i do agree i wish it had a lie flat option-but the maxi cosi car seat fits so ds2 is nice and comfy and comes out for regular cuddles so he has a nice stretch.

Ready4anotherCoffee · 25/01/2009 22:08

I'll second the MB urban double, it has been fab, fits through the front door, and the shops in town, with the additional bonus ds has at on the footrest at times
i have had my dd1 and my friends quite chunky dd in the seats and they fitted in fine

NotSoSkinnyNow · 26/01/2009 16:14

Hi Ladies! Love this thread! Have been eying up the iCandy pear but feel it's expensive considering the drawbacks.
Dc2 is due 6 weeks after ds1's 1st b'day.
Was beginning to feel a bit lost in this double pram jungle! (pregnancy hormones not helping the matter! nearly snapped on phone to lady in one pram shop who didn't agree with my need to see the thing before I spent so much money on it!)
Like you NiniG, am due in june so still some time for researching. will keep an eye on this thread and add any info I come up with!

Lotster · 26/01/2009 16:54

Hi,

my son is 2.5 and I'm due end Feb, seems a pain to get a double pushchair doesn't it at this age? But the way I reasoned it is if it only saves me just once, from having to choose between abandoning the buggy to run after him through a small gap or something, then it's worth it... Much safer to be able to strap them both in when needed.
I feel with a a buggy board your child has to be in the mood to co-operate and stand on it, which my sone isn't all the time I'm afraid!

In the shop I went to, they said the iCandy was more suitable for twins, not a toddler and baby, and looking at it, it was massive but still wouldn't have had enough room for him.

The Phil and Ted's Sport is cheaper and better value if you have a smaller age gap, but for me though, especially with my son being tall I need to go for the Vibe which has more toddler headroom, typical as it's really pricey...

Still, I plan to sell it on ASAP for a good re-sale while still in good nick and then go back to my trusty Mountain Buggy I think.

paranoidmummy · 26/01/2009 17:54

I've been looking at doubles too... LOVE this

Never done a link b4 so that may not work!!!

I've currently got a cameleon (which i heart) and looks v similar. Allows baby and toddler to face u etc. HTH

mumof2andabit · 26/01/2009 19:38

Dd will be 14mo when this little one arrives so we will need a double but as ds will only just be 3 it needs to be one I can steer with one hand while holding his.

Saw someone mention the bebecar vector duo......does anyone have any experience of this one? I had the bebecar vector for ds and loved the proper pram feel.

How's everyone elses pram hunt going?

sasamaxx · 26/01/2009 22:15

For steering with one hand, I think fixed wheels are better - I frequently hold a hand and push the pram.

It's very true about the buggy board requiring a co-operative toddler. I've had some quite hairy moments with this problem - the security of strapping them in when having a tantrum and avoiding stroppy running away moments - is invaluable.

DS was 2 yrs 5mths when DD came along. I thought the double would only be used for a couple of months but he is now 3 and not yet reliable enough to walk/board it much. Most days it's the double or baby in sling.

I really cannot recommend the double MB enough (or the single for that matter) - the seats are roomy, comfy and the whole thing is such a well made piece of kit.

Dottoressa · 26/01/2009 22:16

P&Ts was a life-saver for me (same age-gap as yours). Can't recommend it more highly!

NotSoSkinnyNow · 27/01/2009 13:37

Hmm. Am learning a lot from this thread! Thanks all! I now realise I will need a double for longer than I first thought!
Was going to go for the iCandy as it converts back to a single when DS1 feels like walking everywhere....what was I thinking!!! That obviously won't happen before they BOTH outgrow the Pear!! On the plus side though, the pear seems to have a good re-sale market on e-bay (although this is perhaps because people don't seem to use them for more than 6 months!)
The Leebruss Zoom is my new favourite! But does anyone know where it's possible to see one (am in Scotland).

paranoidmummy · 27/01/2009 13:59

icandy are bringing out an icandy peach in june (not sure if its been mentioned here?) that has bigger seats to solve the prob that babies outgrow it very quickly. Try googling it. I'm still not sure its my cup of tea just as heard they are heavy etc but then none of the double appear that great. Still edging towards the firstwheels city twin elite i think.

or I might but another bugaboo and some duct tapeand stick em together...

NotSoSkinnyNow · 27/01/2009 14:22

Lol at the duct tape idea!!!
My mother of course thinks I'm crazy for wanting to buy another pushchair!! Apparently when we were born, the previous child learned to walk as the pushchair was now occupied by a new baby! I feel the rose coloured glasses (or wine goggles!) have played tricks on her considering there's 11 months between the first 2, then approx 1 year between the rest of us (she had 6 in total! obv no telly in those days!!)
