Holiday in Rhodes at 26 weeks?

Hello all. I know this kind of thing gets asked all the time but before I got pregnant we booked a holiday (actually delayed honeymoon) to Rhodes at the end of August. Of course, I got pregnant much quicker than anticipated and will be 26 weeks when we go, 28 weeks on the dot when we return. Saw consultant today and she said no problem as long as I'm aware of the risks and take into consideration what will happen if I need medical help. I'm now in a bit of a panic about the whole thing. With work and other things we can't really get away otherwise unless we cut it down to just a week and go in the next month. I'm a bit gutted as have had dreadful time over last years (haven't we all) and really been looking forward to honeymoon. What would you do: cancel, rearrange and cut down to a week, or throw caution to the wind and go for it?

It will be very hot! Are you able to change to some where else?

Thank you for replying! As to changing location, I doubt it...and I guess everywhere viable (i.e. in Europe) will be v hot then? Our hotel room has air conditioning, which is good!

More northern Greek islands and Majorca ect will be significantly cooler.

Lazypuppy · 26/05/2022 17:52

I would go and wouldn't think twice. Literally just got back off holiday at 26 weeks pregnant, had a great time!

LolaJ87 · 26/05/2022 17:52

I'd rearrange. I'm just back from honeymoon in Tenerife (I was 11 weeks) and on the hottest day I struggled far, far more than normal, and consistently got tired faster than normal. I can't imagine I would have enjoyed it any more with a bump.

I'd recommend doing a week soon, and then maybe a week somewhere cooler in August (if that's an option??). Having 2 holidays might soften the blow of it not being quite what you expected?

Hugasauras · 26/05/2022 17:52

I would go, personally! With both pregnancies I've felt my best around that gestation and a sun holiday would have been lovely. Obviously make sure you are insured and whatnot!

LolaJ87 · 26/05/2022 17:53

I should say I still had a great time, it just wasn't what I imagined! It could be very tough past the 6 month mark.

FineandDandie · 26/05/2022 17:55

Thank you all - I'm really torn. Breaking it down to two shorter breaks might be an idea...

I wouldn’t travel outside UK after 20 weeks. Friend who is an obstetrician advised that, and it was good advice. Statistically you’ll be fine but I, and many others, went into prem Labour or had prem births with zero warning. I had a text book pregnancy until my waters broke at 28 weeks. As I was close to st thomas’ in London I got top notch care. A friend had the same happen to her on holiday in Australia when she was 24 weeks and got stuck there with a child in Nicu for 3 months.

Oft! These are the things that would HAUNT every moment of the entire holiday!

I would go. Make sure you've got your doctors note and any relevant insurance. Expect to not enjoy the airport (more than usual)! Maybe get some compression socks for the flight as well. I live in a foreign country, I'm 29 weeks snd it hot at the moment. It's hard work. But last week was equally as hot and we were on holiday, so beach, pool, help with toddler etc and it was much more enjoyable! So it's not necessarily about the heat, but about what you plan on doing in the heat! I'd not make any big active plans, and stick to chilling out!

BrightOrion · 26/05/2022 18:17

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and living in a hot country.
I would 100% go if it was me! I went on holiday at 26 weeks, 4 hour flight and a week away in the middle of nowhere and it was amazing and hot and relaxing, spent the whole time at the beach and the pool.

The main thing I did differently was made sure I drank lots of water and put on factor 50/70 suncream to avoid burning.

If you're having a low risk pregnancy you should be fine.

handbagsandholidays · 27/05/2022 05:42

I wouldn't go! I am 22 weeks and currently on holiday. I woke up in a pool of blood yesterday and passed a clot the size of my palm shortly after. I'm now in hospital and expected to stay here for at least another 2 days! The language barrier and different way of working makes a stressful situation even worse. If I could turn back the clock, I would not have come on holiday! X

I travelled to Rhodes last month when I was 26 weeks and travelled back when I was 27+3. The only advice is to check with the airline you are travelling with as you may need a fit to fly for travel after 28 weeks. If you have had a low risk pregnancy, I think you should go and enjoy yourself. I was worried about reduced movements while I was away and what would happen if I had to go to hospital, but it was fine, baby loved the flights and wriggled like mad and was really active every day. I took a flannel that I wet with cold water and put on my bump which helped keep baby from getting too hot :)

Campervangirl · 27/05/2022 07:22

I'd 100% go, I travel to Rhodes yearly and they have excellent clinics in all the small towns and Rhodes hospital is rated one of the best in Greece.
Should anything untoward happen you would be taken very good care of.
Get under some shade, have a dip in the sea or pool to cool down.
Enjoy

Ohnonevermind · 27/05/2022 07:22

I went to Portugal at about that stage. It was lovely but I struggled a little in the heat doing some of the stuff I would usually do as I struggled in the heat more than I normally would.
I remember once having to get the tourist bus up the the hill to Sintra and crying (complete pregnancy hormones) because it was just me and some ‘larger’ tourists and I started thinking ‘is this my life now’. and one of the tourists a loud German who kept asking loudly ‘why is that lady crying’.
I also went to Rome at 31/32 weeks which was lovely but definitely did less walking than I normally would

Winkydink · 27/05/2022 10:10

@handbagsandholidays I’m so sorry you’re going through this, wishing you all the best.

thunderonly · 27/05/2022 10:27

I'm away in Spain atm and it is very hot today they've been having a heatwave, and I'm struggling, but every other day I've been okay in the heat it's been about 26-28 most days apart from a couple that got upto 30 +.

I am 20 weeks and finding it hard to walk far due to ligament pain and getting breathless. Oh and I also have a water infection which was a very expensive trip to the hospital ! Other than that though it's been lovely to get away.
Greece will be roasting though in august so I would advise being in and out of the sun and lots of water and not walking too far

thunderonly · 27/05/2022 10:28

@handbagsandholidays Sorry to hear this I hope you're doing okay?

JNGO21 · 27/05/2022 10:45

I went to Seville at 31 weeks, it was 34 degrees. It was 100% fine! So pleased I went. Lots of stops for tapas and sit downs. I felt so good after some sunshine and relaxing for a week.

Make sure you’ve got your notes with you, compression socks for the plane and take note of where hospitals are.

Pregnant people exist is Greece too! As long as you feel fit and well and take necessary precautions, I don’t think there’s a problem at all.

coconuthead · 27/05/2022 10:48

I went to southern Greece in July at 24 weeks it was hot but it was also lovely to just relax and swim in the pool etc. if you get too hot there are cool areas to sit and relax!

WaltzingWaters · 27/05/2022 10:57

Absolutely go for it as long as you’ve not got any complications. I went to fuerteventura in January at 28 weeks, was 30 weeks when I returned, had an amazing time and still had just about enough energy to enjoy walking into town, daily swims etc, and no need to worry about eating too much! It was significantly cooler than Rhodes would be in august though.
I definitely wouldn’t cut it to two shorter holidays as the travel days are the hardest and most stressful part.
just ensure you have decent travel insurance and maybe look into medical services nearby just in case, but having lived in Greece for 4 years I can speak highly of the medical services available in both Athens and the bigger islands (Though I’ve not been to Rhodes).

whoruntheworldgirls · 27/05/2022 11:03

I went to the Seychelles around 25 weeks and it was fine, odd bit of nausea at times on the flight/boat trip, nothing major. Had a lovely relaxing holiday.
It was v hot and humid but it generally didn't affect me too much (other than slowing me down on walks!), when it did i just went back to the room for a shower and air con

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 27/05/2022 11:07

I went to Spain at 26 weeks, was a high risk pregnancy too. Consultant was fine, go and enjoy yourself. Eat, sleep and enjoy the quiet while you can!
