Progesterone… is front or back best?

Horsegirl83 · 25/05/2022 18:44

Hey all, I’ve been prescribed progesterone after multiple miscarriages and told to use it as soon as I get a positive test… which I got a few days ago and have started using them. I’ve been told you can use them vaginally or anally but was wondering if there’s a difference in effectiveness between the two methods? Obviously round the front door use makes a lot more mess and I don’t really like option two but want to do whatever gives me the best chance of carrying to term 🤞

I have been taking it for several weeks and I go with vaginally. I have been told by some people that the closest you are to the cervix the better.

AwkwardPaws27 · 25/05/2022 18:46

Vaginally can apparently sometimes irritate the cervix causing bleeding, plus it's messier, so I mostly used them rectally. I did alternate occasionally though, as I became a bit sore by 12 weeks.

In terms of efficacy there is no difference.

TinyBearCub · 25/05/2022 19:09

I was told by my consultant to change to the back door as vaginally increases the risk of infection however careful you are with hand hygiene. I had had a big bleed so increased risk of infection anyway, but it made sense to me so have carried on with it in this pregnancy too. Also, waaaay less messy.

Annny27 · 25/05/2022 19:10

I used back as I am prone to thrush so I wanted to avoid anything in the front haha

RoloM610 · 25/05/2022 19:19

I used baginally until I had a big bleed and wondering if that caused my bleed
Then from then used via back passage... found it much better as no mess and felt absorbed more

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/05/2022 19:21

I found they made me really itchy vaginally

Horsegirl83 · 25/05/2022 19:34

Thank you all. Up the back passage it is then! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Just wasn’t sure if it worked better vaginally 🤷🏻‍♀️

I got on much better taking them rectally. Less goo!

Beth262 · 25/05/2022 21:54

I've been on them from 6 weeks. Currently 29 weeks and been instructed to continue until week 37.

Vaginally they are very messy and have on occasion, caused me the odd episode of spotting too. My consultant told me rectally is better because you can keep an eye on any changes in your discharge - but personally I just cant do it! I lasted 2 days rectally.

dreamyunicorn · 25/05/2022 22:15

I'm 6 weeks along and on it because of a a mmc previously.

Mine actually states on the prescription sticker to use vaginally.

I put the night one in last thing before bed and the morning one I try to put in just before I'm going to be still for a while, so on a car journey/ work call etc.
However panty liners are an everyday thing now!

Same. Ugh. And so messy. The backdoor method isn't pleasant but the lesser of two evils!

anniz91 · 26/05/2022 00:09

Your meant to lie down for 30 minutes to avoid the discharge, otherwise gravity works. Rectal route gives me diarrhoea Confused

Even with lying down for 30 minutes, I still get a lot of white goo come out later in the day if I use them vaginally 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mine says both on the label. I just didn’t know if one method worked better. I’ve switched to round the back and it’s definitely getting into my system because my boobs are so sore it’s unreal

My consultant said both work fine and it’s just up to personal preference. I did it vaginally, only because I was on suppositories for colitis at the time. What with that, aspirin, vitamins, oral colitis tablets, blood thinning injections, and at one point the antibiotic cream you had to use vaginally - I felt there was no orifice untouched 😂

The things we go through! Worth it in the end hopefully 🙏

I went with the back as well - top tip is to pop a little bit of sudocrem on the end before you insert as they can make you a bit sore after a while!

CoalCraft · 26/05/2022 10:46

Effectiveness wise I don't think it makes a difference. I prefer to go vaginally as am always worried that I'll need to go to the toilet just after I've inserted it😅

I do it just before bed then pop a pad into my underwear in the morning to catch the inevitable horrible discharge...

Palease · 26/05/2022 11:21

I took them at the back end because I cousins do with the messiness vaginally. I successfully carried my baby to term. The hardest part was stopping taking them, I was convinced something would go wrong so I took them til 14 weeks just in case, even though by then they have a placenta.

this is my fear. I’ve been told to take them to 16 weeks but I don’t want to stop incase I miscarry again. It’s all so scary 😟

Thank you, good to know. I was worried anally might be less effective

I was also worried about this (had three miscarriages before), but you have to trust them - they are professionals! I did what they said to the letter and have a bouncing 1yr old!!!
