Signs of pre-eclampsia beeing ignored again

Abc986 · 22/05/2022 20:11

I had my first during the pandemic and I told my midwife time and time again of signs i was having of pre eclampsia, headaches, high blood pressure, feeling dizzy alot, beeing sick, getting pins and needles alot and even had protein in my urine and my midwife did nothing about it. I ended up beeing induced at 37 weeks after the day unit realising my bump was small and did a growth scan and induced me that same day as my baby had stopped growing and was measuring 33 weeks when i was 37 weeks. He came out a tiny 4lbs 5oz.

Im now pregnant the seccond time, 32 weeks and today i suddenly felt very dizzy and my vision completly blured, i sat down and threw up loads. I rang the day unit and they were not one bit concerned and told me to take it easy and rest. Im so worried signs of pre eclampsia are beeing ignored again. I think im going to ring my midwife tomorow and see if she will check my blood pressure and urine for protein. Or will she just think im over reacting? Ive been taking asprin this time round and i had a growth scan last week which showed baby is growing on his curve well. Im just so paranoid of things taking a turn and the signs beeing ignored again

Anyone else had pre eclampsia the first time then had it again the seccond time? Even though it wasant diagnosed with my first im sure i had it but signs were ignored

You should definitely try and see your midwife if you have any concerns. They’ll be able to ease any doubts you have or help you there is something else going on. Who cares if you’re overreacting, Midwives always say to get in touch if you’re worried! Hope all turns out to be okay x

whosaidtha · 22/05/2022 20:19

You can check your blood pressure at home. Might be worth sourcing a bp monitor. I was also given urine sticks to test at home. I'd been diagnosed first time round though so they obviously took it seriously.
Don't let them fob you off.

Milliesmummy92 · 22/05/2022 20:19

I'm a FTM and has this- 100% call
Midwife I found them so more helpful than hospital and it was actually midwife that referred me for it than midwifes even though turned out after reading all med notes that I'd had this since 22 weeks! If you're worried please call them. I went from waters breaking to being on a drip, fully dilated to DD being at risk of not breathing within 30 mins. Turns out it was all to do with that. Also about 10 weeks after birth I had a massive seizure for around ten mins and that was BP related. Please get checked lovely xx

ChickpeaPie · 22/05/2022 20:22

We’re you diagnosed with PET first time round? It sounds likely with the symptoms and growth restricted baby.
Yes you are more likely to have PET if you’ve had it before.
Definitely contact midwife for full check

Abc986 · 22/05/2022 21:09

@whosaidtha i brought a blood pressure machine with my first and they said at home blood pressure machines arent callobrated so are not accurate and was advised to get my blood pressure checked by a proffesional and to not use the at home blood pressure machine.

@ChickpeaPie i was never diagnosed with my first but had all the symptoms, my midwife didnt see me as often as she should have done due to the pandemic and beeing a shortage of midwifes and my midwife also took holiday when i was due an appointment and didnt book me in with annother midwife instead she made me wait longer for my next appointment, she never listened to me, it was very in and out and any concerns or worries were replied with thats normal in pregnancy, she let the student get on with alot of the checks and never checked them over herself or even watched the student do them, i had a private scan at 32 weeks with my first showing the baby was on the small side but the private scan place said not to worry and i brought the scan charts to my appointment and she didnt even want to look at them, then when i got them out after beeing told in the day unit my bump was small they asked why i didnt show my midwife the charts and were shocked when i said she wasant intrested. My midwife this time round is certainly listening to my concerns more and pays attention when the student does checks and checks them over herself

I had PE with my first and also had BO issues with my second. They were all over me with my second, even kept me in overnight when I had a migraine even though all my tests were clear (even checking the backs of my eyes for signs of raised BP).

Have you tried calling labour ward? I would do that, explain your symptoms, your history of growth restriction and BP issues and tell them you are concerned this might be PE.

I'm sorry you're having to fight with them on this, that's not what you need! What does your at home BP monitor say re: your BP?

whosaidtha · 22/05/2022 21:22

@Abc986 might be different with your trust but if I got a reading over 140/90 I phoned triage and they saw me. Most of the time my bp was down by the time I got in to be checked but they always brought me in.

Sunshinegirl82 · 22/05/2022 21:22

BP issues, not BO issues! Not that I'm aware of anyway! 😀

Just an FYI, PE stands for pulmonary embolism, never pre eclampsia - it’s PET

I could of written this same post today. I had preeclampsia with my first which was missed and then picked up at 38 weeks and immediately induced. I am currently 30 weeks with twins and I saw the consultant on Wednesday. They found protein in my urine and my blood pressure was raised for me. But as I normally have low blood pressure my current BP is not classed as high. Last month my BP was 110/52 then yesterday it was 126/84. The registrar I saw on Wednesday wasn't at all concerned as my BP isn't classed as high!

Then this afternoon I have felt light headed, vomited twice and my feet and hands are swollen.

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow so hoping someone takes a little more notice in the morning. Hope you can get someone to check you too.

Abc986 · 23/05/2022 07:36

@Sunshinegirl82 I rang the labour line straight after it happened as the day unit wasant open for annother half an hour and they werent concerned one bit

@whosaidtha My hospital day unit seem to not want to see anyone. Seccond time i have rang this pregnancy and been told not to come in, first time i rang it was a change in pattern of babys movement and they werent concerned, yet why is there posters up at the midwife saying to allways get checked with reduced movements or a change in pattern? It worries me that the staff levels are worse than what they were back when i had my first in the pandemic november 2020, makes me think do i explore other hospitals further away as my after care with my first was shocking and im more worried about my after care this time than actually giving birth.

I had the same problem, eventually my BP went to 220/180 and I was rushed in as obvs I was very very unwell.

for my second I didn’t want lightning to strike twice. Call PALS. I had a meeting with the head midwife, had weekly scans, and her personal mobile number.

i didn’t actually have Preeclampsia the second time but even so it helped to keep me sane.

SisterAgatha · 23/05/2022 07:51

Just to say as well, I would entirely bypass the midwife as mine was adamant I had it too and was right - but everytime I was sent to day unit they said oh no, what a panic over nothing and discounted her. She had weeks of evidence I had it.

go straight to PALS.

Sweepingeyelashes · 23/05/2022 07:55

@ Donimo That sounds very odd. I have low blood pressure normally. Mine went up and the hospital didn't seem very concerned because on an absolute scale it wasn't very high. My private obstetrician was very concerned though because as he said he knew my normal blood pressure was very low and for me, this was very high He absolutely thought it needed attention. I kept being put into the day ward to rest. I guess if your doctors won't do anything, you should try to stay on bed rest at home till the midwife appointment.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 23/05/2022 08:05

I had PE with my first and midwife didn't want to know. I went to A&E and they took one look at me and sent me straight in to the doctor, no waiting. I ended up being induced within 2 days as BP didn't come down.

I went to see a consultant a year later to discuss it and she's given me a detailed letter to give to doctors/midwife in any future pregnancy.

I now suffer Vasovagal Syncope since which is strange.

Abc986 · 24/05/2022 19:42

I text my midwife yestoday and explained and she had me straight in for a check over. Low blood pressure but no protien in urine which is a good sign, shes given me a tub of urine strips to test for protien when i get worried

So it happened again today.... suddenly felt very dizzy and then threw up.

Since last week ive been feeling not right, thursday i spent all day throwing up, rang the doctors friday and was seen, my urine was bright orange (still is now 3 days later) and had high levels of keytones and low blood pressure all day. The doctor gave me anti sickness tablets and told me to go/ring the hospital if i get dizzy at all.

So this evening i rang the day unit and said i got suddenly very dizzy then threw up and its been going on atleast once a day for a week now, my urine has been bright orange since friday and my blood pressure has also been low. I kept food down all day saturday and drank lots, drank lots today, 4 pints of water so far and thats just my water intake, ive had a coffee and a tango on top of that and my urine is still bright orange and been having dizzy spells on and off. As soon as i said i had been at work today the midwifes response was well if your well enough to go to work then your fine and dont need to come in. I explained that i only have 2 weeks of work left and cannot afford to take a day off. That was the end of the phonecall. The dizzy spell followed by sickness was after i was at work all day which i struggled through but had no choice to as i have bills to pay.

I feel like im constantly beeing fobbed off and ignored. I fear im going to go in one day for them to realise somthing is really wrong just like they did with my first after ignoring me saying somthing is not right for weeks.

Have you been diagnosed with diabetes at all? DP is diabetic and high ketones are a major worry! Understand this is different in someone not diabetic but if not on a keto diet they shouldn't really be over 1.8-2 as it can be dangerous x

Abc986 · 29/05/2022 22:21

@Milliesmummy92 i belive i was tested at the ushal time with a blood test during pregnancy. Midwife on monday did mention that a blood test earlier on in pregancy indicated not diabetic. Can diabetes suddenly arrise later in pregnancy?

OP posts:
Abc986 · 29/05/2022 22:27

@Milliesmummy92 just looked up genestaional diabetes and i have not done the screening for it, ive only had the blood tests offered at 12 and 16 weeks.

But it has made me think maybe i do need to be screened for it as my baby is measuing on the bigger size which is annother indication!

Orange urine can be a sign of jaundice. I had it when I had a blocked bile duct and my liver stopped functioning properly. I recognised it straight away as it was the exact colour of urine that my DS had when he had jaundice as a newborn. Check the whites of your eyes. Mine started to yellow. My skin colour also started to change but it was much more subtle than when my DS was jaundice. Looked like I had a slight tan, even though it was January.

Abc986 · 29/05/2022 23:29

Sorry if its TMI but this is the colour of my urine. Ive just been sick again and had dioreah uncontrolably, im so worried that ive already been dehydrated for 3 days and now im beeing sick loads and have dioreah, ive made up a sachet of rehydration crystals, nothing on the leflet says not to use in pregnancy and from google/nhs it says they are safe to take

Please go to the hospital

SisterAgatha · 29/05/2022 23:50

Preeclampsia is high BP though, not low. When I was hospitalised with mine, I had no urine, I had no water to give at all, not even enough for tears or saliva. I couldn’t even be sick, there was nothing but stars and pain.

im not saying you aren’t unwell because this is some seriously orange wee, but I don’t think it’s preeclampsia. See how you go with the dioralyte, and defo get checked for diabetes.
