New born and holiday!

BabyAlfie22 · 20/05/2022 14:14

My baby boy is due June 11th.

My partner wants to go aboard for a family holiday, it is also his birthday. Weare both really excited to do this!

My concern is, is the baby too young , he could be anywhere between 4-6 weeks ( depending if he comes early or late or next week 😂)

Will he need anything , Jabs etc?

We were going to get a passport fast tracked.

We are thinking Tenerife/Spain so not too far on plane.

Would you take your newborn this young? Are there any complications ?

Need some advice please 🙏

I wouldnt go on holiday anywhere with a baby that young - what happens if he comes late, you end up with an energency C-section! If there are any complications after the birth you may not be up to going anywhere - and this all assumes you could get a passport for him - sime people are waiting months for passports at the moment!

Lazypuppy · 20/05/2022 14:22

My concern wouldn't be baby, smaller the baby easier broad travel is. But more your recovery, what if you had yo have c section? Or other complications? I was fine at 4-6 werks with my first so holiday would have been easily doable

Regenbogen22 · 20/05/2022 14:23

I wouldn't book anything either.
Just delay until September or October - still lovely and warm and the sea will be warmer too!

MolliciousIntent · 20/05/2022 14:23

No, this is a bad idea. Baby will be unvaccinated, so taking them on a crowded plane is unnecessarily risky. You will still be physically recovering and might find travelling very uncomfortable. Youll be getting very little sleep and your days will be a complete blur, it's a waste of money to go on holiday in that state!

Twizbe · 20/05/2022 14:23

Nope!

Not sure what the min age to fly is either.

You can't get a passport until you have a birth certificate and that can take a while too.

You're likely to still be bleeding and can't use a tampon so no swimming for you.

If you have a c section you might not be able to fly

4-6 weeks is about when witching hours start. Meaning you could have a baby who screamed the place down every evening.

I know it's his birthday and it might make for a very different birthday having a newborn (we had a 5 week baby on my husbands birthday twice) but a holiday abroad isn't a good idea.

Maybe have a delayed celebration and holiday in September when things will have calmed down a bit.

mumonthehill · 20/05/2022 14:23

I think getting a passport that quickly may be difficult. Also if you have any complications you may not feel up to it at all. In your shoes I would have dc, apply for passport and once you have it and if you feel like it book something then. It is not hugely difficult to travel with a baby but it is hard if you are not feeling great and still recovering from the birth.

MarianosOnHisWay · 20/05/2022 14:25

It will be sooooo hot in the Canary Islands/Spain for little ones at that time of year. October or early November would be nice? How about Center Parcs or a similar U.K. holiday type place when baby is tiny?

Chatwin · 20/05/2022 14:26

I know people who have travelled to visit family with a tiny baby but it was very, very hard going, and that was having everything available from equipment to family support on arrival.

Potential downsides are pain from birth/c-section, not being fit to fly (insurance issues?), still bleeding (couldn't think of anything worse than being poolside in that scenario), keeping baby cool and hydrated in very hot weather, trying to establish feeding or working out how to sterilise bottles abroad, needing emotional or physical support, etc.

We were going to get a passport fast tracked

I take it you haven't read the hundreds of posts on here plus news articles about people waiting weeks or even months for a passport.

On the plus side, a newborn, especially an exclusively breastfed one, is extremely portable, take a sling, don't plan to do much, keep them out of the sun, could all be really chilled.

The problem is you just don't know how your birth experience will be. Between that and the passport issues, I would wait until baby is 3-4 months.

tealandteal · 20/05/2022 14:28

Apparently there are still quite long waits for birth certificates, which you will need before you can apply for a passport. I am due a few days after you and wouldn’t consider this. Wait until the baby is here and you have the passport before booking so that you don’t give yourself extra stress.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 20/05/2022 14:29

No I wouldn’t.

There’s no point being anywhere hot as you’ll spend the entire time keeping the baby in the shade/keeping them cool.

Your recovery might not be straight forward at all.

You probably won’t be getting much sleep, so you’ll probably spend the holiday taking it in turns to nap/ stay with the baby in the hotel room.

The baby won’t have had any of their jabs by then, I definitely wouldn’t want them on a plane breathing hundreds of people’s germs when their so young.

If the baby did get ill it would be very scary being abroad, tiny babies can deteriorate very quickly.

Sorry for all the negativity, just feeling rising panic at the thought of going on holiday. It was a big outing for me to go the shops when my DS was 6 weeks old!

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 20/05/2022 14:29

Nope. 4-6 weeks after dc1 I was an absolute wreck. Hopefully you'll bounce back from birth but I found delivery and the post-natal stage brutal. With dc2 I'd had a c section and was antibiotics for an infection at 4 weeks pp. Dc3 I felt fine physically but absolutely shattered - there's no way I'd have wanted to be anywhere other than home. I'm sure other people do it but they are made of sterner stuff than me!

savemeagin · 20/05/2022 14:35

I would not have wanted to go on holiday that quickly after either of my DSs. First one VD, second C-Section. I had to wait 2 weeks to get the birth certificate. I couldn't have got there any quicker even if they had earlier appointments as I was in a mess.
You'll spend the whole time worrying about keeping baby cool.
However we took DS1 on holiday at 4 months - that was fine.

HSKAT · 20/05/2022 14:35

Babies are easier on holiday but that would have been too soon for me.
Physically and mentally. I found the first few weeks brutal tbh.
Passports are mental atm I doubt you'd get it in time.
Wait until later in the year it'll be much more enjoyable.

canyoutoleratethis · 20/05/2022 14:36

Oh my. If my husband would have suggested a holiday to celebrate his birthday 4 weeks after I gave birth, I would have found a new husband.

OP, I suggest when your partner pushes his son out of his own vagina, or has him surgically removed by cutting through his stomach muscles, he can make all the plans he likes for a 'birthday holiday'. Until then, I really do think you should put yourself and the baby first and not book anything until the baby is born and you know how you feel. I had a lovely straight forward homebirth with my DD, but I would definitely not have wanted to get on a plane to a hot country with a 4 week old baby.

Imohsotired · 20/05/2022 14:38

No not now. My 6 week old doesn’t have a passport yet and I registered and applied as quickly as possible. If you are two weeks over plus a c section you’ll still be recovering four weeks later.

I’m not overly cautious (we packed our bags and set of with an 8 week old on a month long holiday a few years ago) but covid, airplane cabins, no vaccinations etc would mean I’d wait to September

daisychainsandrainbows · 20/05/2022 14:38

Is this your first baby? If you've already had children and think you can do it then I salute your madness bravery but if this is your first baby honestly just abandon the idea and get a feel for parenthood in the comfort of your own home before venturing abroad.

MrsH497 · 20/05/2022 14:39

My second contracted bronchiolitis at 10 days old and needed 3 days in hospital I'd had an elective section. I 100% would not do this holiday baby won't be vaccinated, you are likely to be exhausted and recovering physically and emotionally. Honestly I think you're crazy even thinking about it. Wait until baby is 3+ months then look at a holiday. It'll be very warm for a tiny baby as well

fancyfrogs · 20/05/2022 14:41

Absolutely not.
Also do not think you'd get a passport - thousands are having major problems with them, just search for a few of the many threads on here.

EileenGC · 20/05/2022 14:42

Most airlines require baby to be at least 8 days old, so legally and medically - if the baby is healthy - there's nothing to stop you from taking them on a plane.

I would have no problem doing this, IF you had fully recovered, IF no complications with baby / their feeding AND you can register them immediately and their passport comes in time.

Hugasauras · 20/05/2022 14:44

Passport waits are horrendous right now. I doubt you'd get one in time, even with fast track.

Sqeebling · 20/05/2022 14:46

Don't book anything as it's highly unlikely you'd get a passport on time. Also if baby gets ill you're a bit screwed

ShadowPuppets · 20/05/2022 14:46

We’re flying to a wedding in the UK at what will be 6 weeks postpartum for me with DC2 who was born on Tuesday, while I’m feeling pretty ropey now I’m happy that I’ll be fine to fly by then based on how DC1’s went compared to this time.

However I agree with PPs that a passport for you may be an issue (we don’t need one as flight is internal) and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere hot with baby at that stage (fine chance for us, the wedding’s in Scotland 😂). We have a proper holiday booked for September which is probably the earliest I’d go (and also much, much cheaper as it’s not school summer holidays - we only have 3 years left of not paying premium prices so I’m making the most of it!)

whosaidtha · 20/05/2022 14:47

I have mild panic about keeping baby cool

in the English weather never mind Spain. Would not be relaxing.

resipsa · 20/05/2022 14:49

Took DC2 at 12 weeks and it was fine but wouldn't have enjoyed any type of holiday with DC1 at 4-6 weeks!

KangarooKenny · 20/05/2022 14:49

No, I wouldn’t go. In fact I didn’t take mine abroad until they’d had their first MMR jab.
