Aspirin during pregnancy

Hey all,

has anyone been taking Aspirin during pregnancy? I’ve got low Papp-a and been told to take 150mg Aspirin daily … I’m no doctor but it seems excessive… has anyone else done this? I started from about 14 weeks

Thanks 😀

Yep. 150mg from 12 weeks onward then at 28 weeks I start blood thinning injections. I have 3 risk factors (old, ivf, health issue).

leah3 · 17/05/2022 20:40

@Bryterlayter1 thank you love x

150mg from 12 weeks onwards here too 👍🏻 Mine was due to high BMI. Healthy pregnancy and healthy baby born on his due date 😊

Wishing you a very healthy pregnancy @leah3 😊

PeaceLily2000 · 17/05/2022 20:53

Yes I started taking 75mg at 12 weeks but then it was upped to 150mg and my consultant said the change was because the guidance from RCOG had been updated so that 150mg was the correct amount. This was last summer.

Moancup · 17/05/2022 20:57

It’s the absolutely standard treatment for low PAPP-A. I’m on it. It didn’t seem excessive to me and I’m generally against the super cautious approach to pregnancy.

Sunnyshoeshine · 17/05/2022 21:00

Yep, i had to do this due to being high risk for pre-eclampsia - 150mg from 12 weeks until 36 weeks. Must have worked as at 37+5, my BP suddenly went through the roof and DD was born in a hurry at 38w exactly.

Apparently it works more effectively if you take it right before bed.

Moonshine160 · 17/05/2022 21:06

Also on 150mg a day for previous pre-eclampsia. :)

Merryclaire · 17/05/2022 22:33

I’ve been taking 150mg since 12 weeks as I have 3 risk factors - high bmi, age and hypothyroidism. I’ve been told to take it right to the end.

Hallibob · 17/05/2022 22:56

I'm also on 150mg a day, the midwife wasn't sure if it should be 75 or 150 but the GP said the guidance had been updated and 150mg was the new recommended amount. It's fine 🙂

Bimbomboosh · 17/05/2022 23:00

I took 150mg aspirin daily from 7 weeks to 36 weeks during my second pregnancy after losing my first baby at 19 weeks pregnant. I saw a haematologist (I was living abroad at the time) and she said I didn't appear to have any clotting issues after testing but to just take it anyway and my happy healthy 6 month old is asleep next to me!

Dyra · 17/05/2022 23:26

150mg isn't a large dose. Half a regular tablet. I took it from BFP, as I knew I was going to be told to take it anyway due to BMI and previous pre-eclampsia. Stopped when I was admitted to hospital as I was on blood thinner injections instead. If I hadn't developed pre-eclampsia again, I would have been taking it right up until birth.

annlee3817 · 18/05/2022 03:50

That's half the dose you'd normally take for asprin as an adult, usually adults would take 1-2 300mg tablets.

I've been on 150mg a day since 12 weeks due to age.

Fizzyfish · 18/05/2022 04:14

I'm on 150mg aspirin, 80mg clexane, have been on aspirin since 12wks, 28 now, all good

dreamyunicorn · 18/05/2022 04:27

Everyone taking aspirin due to age, what's the reason as I've never heard of this?

I'm on 150mg due to previous mmc and took 75mg myself after ovulation (over counter bought) then dr said 150g I'm 5 weeks so far.

Not sure how long I'm supposed to take it for but after reading here I'm thinking as long as possible!

As I know from a recent experience, you can’t always blindly trust medical professionals - you also need to research things yourself.
It was only after doing research that I recently highlighted an issue with my own pregnancy care, which is now being formally investigated.
Nothing wrong with asking others to find out what the norms are for something you are experiencing.
That doesn’t mean you should self diagnose and medicate. But does allow you to highlight concerns.

lavenderfine · 18/05/2022 07:19

I took 150mg too all the way through although mine was for pre-eclampsia as I had it with my previous pregnancy. 150mg is fine, if you're worried about anything like that speak to your midwife she will be able to reassure you :)

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2022 07:21

yes I was told 150mg of aspirin from think 12w. Ivf preg. Over 40. And previous blood clot

Merryclaire · 18/05/2022 07:32

@dreamyunicorn I believe it’s because age increases the risk of preeclampsia. However age in itself may not always be enough of a reason to prescribe aspirin - but is a contributing factor to the recommendation.

Cakecakecheese · 18/05/2022 08:32

@dreamyunicorn The advice is to take it up to 36 weeks. Obviously check that with your midwife or doctor.

Cakecakecheese · 18/05/2022 08:36

This is from my pregnancy notes.

Aspirin during pregnancy
OooohAhhhh · 18/05/2022 08:38

Yes me.
Midwife said it thins your blood ever so slightly to provide more oxygen to the placenta. I'm on 150mg dispersible aspirin.

110APiccadilly · 18/05/2022 08:48

I'm on it as a precaution as DD was small at birth, so in case that was something to do with the placenta, which was also small, they want me taking aspirin as it can help increase blood flow to the placenta. (That's my, possibly incorrect, understanding, anyway.)

I'm happy with that, though I'm generally really cautious about taking medication. But DD was a shock (to everyone, no one knew she was tiny till she was born) and I'm uncomfortably aware that it could have gone very differently (she was perfectly healthy, just small), so I'll do what I'm advised to do to decrease the risk this time round.

leah3 · 18/05/2022 08:54

Thanks all, my fault if I wasn't clear (for those saying 150mg isnt high) I'm not so much saying 150mg is a high dose, I'm saying taking it everyday for that long seems excessive..

@Joessaysthankyou Do you really think this was the first place I asked for advice? I'm not an idiot! Obviously I spoke to the hospital when they called me about it. I'm not sure how your GP surgery works, but no way could I just ring up and ask to speak to a Dr just to ask this question. I'd have to ring at 8 o'clock, be on hold for absolutely ages, book an appointment, etc, it's not that easy! So please don't be patronising when I've merely come on just to speak to other mothers who have also been through it! If you look online, there are a lot of mixed messages about it which is why I asked the question.

Thank you so much everyone else for the responses :) <3
