Aspirin during pregnancy

Hey all,

has anyone been taking Aspirin during pregnancy? I’ve got low Papp-a and been told to take 150mg Aspirin daily … I’m no doctor but it seems excessive… has anyone else done this? I started from about 14 weeks

Thanks 😀

Yes I did in my second pregnancy due to my first baby being small 5lb10oz. Definitely helped my second was 7lb 8oz

Wait a minute...!! So I had low Papp-a and my midwife said I didn't need to take the aspirin! I was induced 3.5 weeks early with DD who had stopped growing and blood flow from the placenta was restricted. DD was only 4.9lbs when born.

If my midwife had given me aspirin, is there a chance my baby could have waited until term to being born with the possibility of blood flow being normal?!

I was asked to start taking 150mg aspirin per day at my booking appointment which took place at 8 weeks. I'm pregnant through IVF and the midwife told me that it is trust policy to ask all women with IVF pregnancies to take aspirin and reduce the risk of clotting issues / pre eclampsia / placenta issues.

@leah3 I get what you mean about the length of time. Mine us an IVF pregnancy and I've been taking aspirin since my transfer that was in November so it does seem like a very long time to be taking a painkiller, albeit one with a low dose, but then my mum has been on it for years for one of her medical conditions (possibly heart? She has a few conditions it's hard to keep up!) and she hasn't had any ill effects from it.

@ReginaPhalangeIsMyTwin it may have helped yes but it's not really possible to know for sure. Your midwife probably went by the at risk list, you would tick one of the high risk factors on the list or 2 lower risk ones to be recommended aspirin.

I take it every day anyway as I have APS. I also had low Papp-A (Papp-A is a protein made by the placenta, low levels mean the placenta potentially is not functioning at optimal levels, which can cause complications).

LowPAPP-A can cause some pretty serious complications, such as miscarriage after 18 weeks, premature labour, pre eclampsia and low birth weight. Sounds scary but it’s very common and aspirin is the best treatment. These risks don’t go away until your baby arrives, which is why you need to take it for your whole pregnancy.

In case no one has told you, aspirin is most effective for blood flow when taken at night. No one knows why, but this is now NHS advice following a 10 year international study (according to my OB).

Wishing you a smooth rest of your pregnancy x

Thank you all! :)

@ReginaPhalangeIsMyTwin this is where my confusion comes from also! lol! Sorry you had to go through that :(

@Cakecakecheese Thank you love, that's reassuring. I'm just an over-thinker and I hate it! :(

@Littlegoth Thank you so much! xx

Hi all, doesn't Asprin make you more likely to have a haemorrhage at time of delivery?

I'm taking it but I was wondering this.. I'm on 150mg

Rrrunrunrunrunrun · 18/05/2022 09:40

I took it first pregnancy due to low papp-a, and second time due to previous pre eclampsia. It seemed to work, I stopped taking it at 36 weeks and was admitted to hospital at 36+3 with pre eclampsia…
This time I’m on 75mg but your post has made me wonder if I need to up it to 150mg..

CoalCraft · 18/05/2022 10:02

My midwife recommended I take 75 mg aspirin per day due to previous preterm birth. I'm not really sure it'll make much difference in my case but it can't do any harm either. I think I started it around 13-14 weeks

Thank you all xx

@talkingthewalk normally you take it until 36 weeks. If you have a known (as much as can be!) delivery date, for example you are being induced or c section you normally stop 10 days before your date.
