Next baby clothes sizing for smaller babies

I know there have been a few posts on Next, but they're a few years old and don't necessarily discuss the smaller sizes, so hope you don't mind.

Baby girl is measuring 4lbs7 at 35 weeks and is going to be delivered at 39 weeks or at 37 weeks if our next growth scan doesn't show much progress. Hopefully she'll be over the 5lb mark, but probably less than 6lbs.

Question is what size clothes to buy!? Most shops seem to do up to 5lbs (too small) or up to 7lbs (too big), which feels like a big gap to me!

I've heard Next baby clothes run big so maybe the 5lbs clothes might work right up to about 6lbs... has anyone bought their 5lb clothes?

I think they run perfectly and not on the bigger side. My babies wore their 'first size' for the first two weeks but they were over 7lbs. You could try their 'tiny baby' but don't buy too many as they could be outgrown very quickly! Scans don't estimate the weight very accurately also don't forget

BundtCake · 28/04/2022 21:23

I find next smaller than M&S, Tu and H&M. They have 5lbs sleepsuits in their clearance section.

Puddlelane123 · 28/04/2022 21:26

I had a baby just less than 6lbs and the Next tiny baby size fitted perfectly for the first 3-4 weeks.

Best of luck and enjoy those tiny baby cuddles!

SparkyBlue · 28/04/2022 21:26

I found the next tiny baby stuff great. Lovely and soft as well. Mothercare used to be brilliant for this type of stuff. My three were all premature so all too small for ages for the normal newborn stuff

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 28/04/2022 21:28

At 34+6 my little one measured 4lb 3oz.
Born 15 days early at 5lb 7oz.
I bought a just a few small baby items just incase as growth scans can be wrong.
Next sizes I found smaller that the rest, I found John Lewis and M&S sized bigger.
M&S newborn size was far too big for my little girl.

EllieJai44 · 28/04/2022 21:28

My little boy was born 6lb 1oz but was tiny clothes wise- he had Asda premie to start for about a week, then went into Sainsburys and M&S tiny baby and then into Asda Tiny baby- we never had Next 5lb clothes but took a long while to get into Next Newborn!
Asda Tiny baby I found to be roomy!

However 4 and half pounds at 35 weeks isn't too small, the last few weeks they can pile it on! Hopefully she catches up!

Bobbybobbins · 28/04/2022 21:30

We found Next small sizes perfect for our 6 pound DS and better than M&S etc which seemed much bigger. When DS2 came along at 8'2 he had no chance of fitting in them 🤣

Quornflakegirl · 28/04/2022 21:30

My twins were 5lb4 and 5lb8 and I went with a next up to 7lbs sleepsuits and vests and while they were a bit big they did them just fine.

Good luck!

Lockdownmummy · 28/04/2022 21:39

I would probably go for the up to 7lb stuff. As much as clothing is sized for weight it's really the length of your baby that matters with sleepsuits.

Also I find that a bit too big is less of an issue for newborns as the have cuddles all day and don't really move! My little crawling 8 month old is struggling in her 6-9 month sleepsuits losing her legs in the excess material 😂

Hyggeandhugs · 28/04/2022 21:45

Thanks everyone

I think I've just gone down a rabbit hole with the clothes today, probably to distract from worrying, so this is all really helpful adviceSmile

Next clearance is great for sleepsuits in all sizes, lovely quality and wash well.

WhatsitWiggle · 28/04/2022 21:51

Baby will be in the smaller sizes for a really short time! Have a look on ebay for 5lb and 7lb bundles, it'll be much cheaper and you can buy new for the next stage which will last a couple of months.

All babies look swamped in their first sleepsuits, then they grow and fill out, look perfect for about a week, then too tight, you move to the next size and the cycle starts again!

sageandbasil · 28/04/2022 21:53

I find next to run small. They're beautiful clothes but they're deff on the smaller size. My friend said Asda was brilliant for tiny baby

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 28/04/2022 21:57

We got some tiny baby bits that are up to 5lbs for DD a few weeks ago (now 3 weeks old), she was 5lbs 14oz born 3 weeks early. They fitted her perfectly for a week or so but she's quite long and skinny. I think it's George at Asda, their tiny baby stuff is up to 6lbs, DD still fits in those perfectly

N0va · 28/04/2022 21:59

Just to add that my DS was estimated 6lb 4 at 38 week growth scan and came out 10lb 8 Confused

Hyggeandhugs · 28/04/2022 22:18

I'm guessing it's fine for cardigans to be bigger sizes, because they sit on top of other layers anyway and get padded out and also dresses because arm and leg length don't really matter?

We got a lot of wear out of the upto 1 month Next size for 5lb 8 DD#1. Few packs of t shirt sleeve length vests, couple multipacks babygros and a few cardis

ohidoliketobe · 28/04/2022 22:26

Thing with dressed is if it's slightly chilly you'll have to faff with tights and they're a pita. Easier with a slightly too big baby gro ime.
General rule is 1 more layer than you're wearing for the first few months, as their temperature regulation isn't fully developed

ohidoliketobe · 28/04/2022 22:26
  • with dresses
Sunnyshoeshine · 28/04/2022 22:33

My baby was 5lbs 12oz. If you are interested in alternatives to Next, we found John Lewis tiny baby size fitted her until she was 2months old and the Anyday range is very good value (she dropped a lot of weight after birth and was tracking 0.4th centile for a while). M&S tiny baby size is up to 6lbs 03oz and def bigger - she was still in some of those at around 3 months but had mostly moved into newborn by then. So that is also a good option.

My mum also got us some lovely bits from Asda.

20viona · 29/04/2022 01:59

My daughter was 5lb 3oz and wore tiny baby for a month or so, Asda Morrisons and boots were great.

Moosh18 · 29/04/2022 04:18

@Hyggeandhugs hey our DD was so so tiny! And the two places that fit best were next Tony baby, and Sainsbury's premature! X

BundtCake · 29/04/2022 07:08

Don’t bother with dresses for a newborn. Such a pain. Onesies are all you need.

TulipsGarden · 29/04/2022 07:14

You don't want your newborn in dresses, such a faff! You just need vests and onesies/sleep suits for the first few weeks. Keeps them nice and cosy, and easy to change. I'm not sure any of my friends with daughters had them in dresses until they were toddling... definitely not practical with crawling either.

I don't think you'll need cardigans either, maybe one if its really chilly? But we're going into summer soon so just blankets will be fine in the pram.

itssquidstella · 29/04/2022 10:52

I’ve got some Next newborn sleepsuits and they're tiny! I’m due in three weeks and baby is estimated to be about 8lb by then, with long legs, and I don't think he'll fit the Next clothes at all - or I might have to cut the feet off the sleepsuits!
