40+2 reduced movements

Hi so at my 39 week appointment I explained to my midwife that my baby wasn't moving like he usually does, he was moving here and there. She said that this is normal as towards the end of my pregnancy baby has less room to move so movements will feel different, but as the week has went on my baby has gotten more and more quiet and I'm now worried I have phoned in this morning and expressed my concerns but they don't seem to be too worried as I can still feel him move sometimes. Yesterday he only moved when I poked him I can't see how that would be a good sign :( at my last appointment baby's heart rate was fine can a baby be in distress if heart rate is fine? My partner is saying I should go in and demand to be seen

Movements can be felt differently but shouldn't be less, you need to be seen.

mummyh2016 · 15/04/2022 09:16

If you don't want to demand it just tell them you haven't felt baby at all.

wishuponastar1988 · 15/04/2022 09:17

You need to be seen - ring and demand to go in x

mumof2littlemonkeysx · 15/04/2022 09:18

@mummyh2016 thank you I'm getting things sorted to go to hospital now

Hope your ok, I would ring pregnancy triage or labour ward and say your worried and want to be seen. In my experience they do check you for reduced movements, especially at term. Be polite but insist on being seen, hope all goes well. Xx

Marjoriehere · 15/04/2022 09:23

Good news! I was induced with reduced movements, so take your bag! All the best! Xx

endofthelinefinally · 15/04/2022 09:23

Your midwife is completely wrong and out of date. I hope you are at the hospital being monitored.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 15/04/2022 09:28

Yes you definitely need to be checked. I went in for reduced movement at 40+ 5 and was found to be ok but rather than wait until 10 days over they induced me there and then, so be prepared!

babyboybluewithnumbertwox · 15/04/2022 09:30

I had my first baby at 40+2 and he was moving exactly the same as weeks before! I hope you are being seen lovely and have your bags just incase!! Flowers x

Howmanydaysuntilfriday · 15/04/2022 09:37

Hope your ok op

Whiskeypowers · 15/04/2022 09:40

Definitely doing the right thing going in to he seen
At 40+2 with reduced movement they should be inducing labour promptly

yellowwellingtons · 15/04/2022 09:41

I had DD at 41+1 and she moved as normal until the very end, your midwife is giving really outdated and false information, I'd honestly be looking at putting a complaint in as that could be dangerous for someone who just takes her word, it sounds like she needs some updated training.

Hope everything goes fine for you at the hospital op!

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 15/04/2022 09:42

Lord above PLEASE go to the hospital and demand to be seen
As you are overdue I would ask about being given a sweep induction etc

custardbear · 15/04/2022 09:45

I'm sure it's fine, but you absolutely need to be seen, good luck

Arecklessmanor · 15/04/2022 09:48

I went in many times for monitoring for reduced movements and every midwife stressed that the baby should not move less, and that they were always happy to do the CTG monitor to either provide reassurance or prompt a plan (whether additional monitoring, a cord blood flow scan or getting the baby out).

I would also complain about that dangerous attitude.

kalidasa · 15/04/2022 09:49

There's a really useful app called "Count the Kicks". It says very clearly that in late pregnancy movements can change as the baby runs out of room (e.g. more like rolling or pushing than kicking) but they shouldn't reduce. I'm glad you have gone straight to the hospital.

ljdxxx · 15/04/2022 09:50

I had an appointment at 40weeks for a sweep I mentioned I hadn't felt my baby move much that morning, they monitored me for a hour and I had to press a button when I felt him move. An hour later I was told I was being induced 2 days later, reduced movements need to be monitored Smile

Cakeandcoffee93 · 15/04/2022 09:51

Just go in! Get baby monitored. Don’t be worried about going in all the time your baby and you are more important

Sponge19 · 15/04/2022 09:51

Movements shouldn’t reduce, they just feel different. I had reduced movements at 40+2 too and they told me to come straight in for monitoring

HippeePrincess · 15/04/2022 09:54

Just want to echo that they don’t run out of room to move. My first was over 10lb and I was slim , he was still kicking away right into labour and had no reduced movements!

aprilsunshine777 · 15/04/2022 10:02

I was at the hospital only yesterday and the midwives kept saying - any reduced movements or change in pattern that is unusual (less than normal) - go and see them.
They also said several times that the baby should not have reduced movements towards the end of pregnancy as 'they don't have room' because the uterus stretches so they do still move about and have enough room.
I imagine it is fine but I really would go in.
The midwife absolutely should NOT have said that it's normal for the movements to reduce towards the end. That is not true.

mumof2littlemonkeysx · 15/04/2022 11:16

At hospital now been on monitor for 30 mins all seems fine so far but they are keeping me in for an hour to see if anything changes. Baby's heart rate keeps going up to 178 but they said that can be normal so we will see. Thank you for advice

Iv been induced for reduced movements before at 38 weeks. They midwife’s won’t be able to discharge you their selfs they will have to take your trace to the consultant and they will decide what’s best but the fact your over due and baby is moving less I do think they may well keep you and induce you as that would be safer for baby at this stage

@Nikki037297 they have discharged me consultant was happy enough with the trace, they asked me if I was wanting to be induced I said that was not my intentions unless it was best for baby and if they felt it was safer. They told me they are under staffed just now so I took that as a no and that it wasn't necessary at the moment but now It's made me feel nervous for when I do go into labour if they are under staffed.

aprilsunshine777 · 16/04/2022 07:01

I'm glad everything is ok but can see your concern when they've said about being under staffed.
You've said that you'd be induced if it was safer for the baby - was the only reason they didn't because they were under staffed? Or if they have the staff would they have induced you? If it's safer then they need to do it. Their staff situation shouldn't be the priority.
