Heavily pregnant in summer

Due DC3 at end of August. Very excited and happy but dreading the hot weather- I don't cope well in the heat anyway and am already working about it. Had anyone who has been heavily pregnant in the height of summer got any top tips to help me cope?

I was 7 months at the height of summer and hated the heat! I was so irritable! My top tips are floaty dresses, chaffing stick/talc and hide indoors when it gets too much

Bountifull · 27/03/2022 18:50

I feel you OP, I’m due 22nd August with my first Blush I’m not as worried about during the day (though am sure it’ll be hard work!) it’s more night as I’ve been so hot in bed all winter an have slept with a fan on every night so god knows what I’m going to be like in the summer!

I plan on floaty dresses/ sunhat and keeping out of the sun at really hot times! Also a hand held fan!

TeddyTonks · 27/03/2022 18:56

Yes, I'm thinking maxi dresses, fan, cooling spray...who knows what else, getting someone else to chase my older DC maybe Grin

When in was heavily pregnant over summer I spent a lot of time with my feet in a washing up bowl of cold water, you can also buy handheld fans which spray water.

But my biggest tip, is to snack on frozen grapes. For some reason they really cooled me down when I was suffering... and being grapes I could eat loads without feeling guilty.

Ugh I was working in London when pregnant in the summer of 2019 when it was so hot the train tracks melted. It was the worst especially as I have v.bad havfever.

A cool mist humidifier for night time and lots of iced tea helped.

LizzieMacQueen · 27/03/2022 19:01

Fan with a bowl of water in front of it. I'd advise you buy fans now before it gets hot and they sell out.

Then when you get close to your due date, feet up to help swelling and eat ice pops.

TeddyTonks · 27/03/2022 19:02

Oh good tip on buying fans now. We have a couple but obviously always prioritise DCs rooms over ours when it's hot. Think I'll order one soon. Thanks!

Fill a hot water bottle with cold water and put it in the freezer take it out before bed to keep you cool in the night.

Fans directly on you at night or buy an air con machine if you have the funds (we had to as we had a boiling hot new build!)

Light dresses with cycle shorts if your a bigger lady.

Stay inside as much as possible with the fan on!

annlee3817 · 27/03/2022 19:08

Cold showers before bed, I'm also due end of August, had DD beginning of June and cold showers helped with sleep

whyrusoangry · 27/03/2022 19:08

I have been abroad when heavily pregnant with both DS.

Stay in the shade as much as possible, cool drinks, floaty clothes, keep hair tied up.

Beachsidesunset · 27/03/2022 19:11

I was born during the long hot summer of '76. I don't know how my mother managed it. Currently due my fourth at the end of August so I guess I'll find out!

AlwaysLatte · 27/03/2022 19:22

One of mine is in July. Make a nice spot in the house with air conditioner (you can get portable ones) and loose cotton clothes.

ChloeHel · 27/03/2022 19:38

A paddling pool will be your saviour! Make sure to add Milton to it and change it every few days though.

Anti chafe balm for the thighs, my god I’ve never been so irritated by anything in my entire life than my own thighs during my summer pregnancy!

A nice cold wooden floor to lie on. My dog and I spent many a day just led on our kitchen floor during 2020 lockdown haha.

Keep curtains closed and windows open during the day, then curtains open and windows open in the night.

UnspeakableBode · 27/03/2022 19:42

I had my 1st September 2018, the year we had a very long very hot heat wave. I was very irritable and hate ppl sat outside pubs enjoying by the weather 🤣. I would freeze 3 bottles of water and take the with me to work, Sat with one at the small of my back and kept rotating, drank once enough had melted. Ate a lot of ice lollies! I'm due my 2nd Oct so praying for a cool summer!

NorthernWanker · 27/03/2022 19:51

I don't care how much it costs me I'm buying an air conditioner. My thought process is I'll be heavily pregnant, we'll have a 2 year old and a new baby when it might still be really hot so think it's worth investing. I don't mind the heat in the day it's the night that kills me.

Happymiraclemorning · 27/03/2022 20:00

I was pregnant through the summer- already plus size so I really struggled

I got a second hand air con unit (£50) it turned my bedroom into the Arctic! It was heaven!!!

Lots of ice water and ice lollies

Feet in the paddling pool

Luke warm showers twice a day

Also damp towel over your body at night

Fans

Maxi skirts and dresses - chin run shorts underneath

Water spray during the day

I remember going to the cinemas on my days off and buying tango blasts as the cinema had air con

I’m a big girl and struggle in the heat so I’m always finding ideas to keep cool

DelurkingAJ · 27/03/2022 20:01

I was pregnant in the summer of 2012 and spent much of it at the local pool and the rest of the time in my underwear in front of a fan with DH spraying me with water from one of those garden spray bottles. Very classy. Luckily it was DC1 so nobody else had to see.

Muslins drenched in water and then wrung out to use as a blanket…as the water evaporates it cools you down.

RandomMess · 27/03/2022 20:20

End of August, south east, heat wave of 2003.

Keep your blinds/curtains shut. Sleep downstairs, cold baths, soak feet in water with ice cubes.

RandomMess · 27/03/2022 20:21

Wet your hair in the shower every morning!

AlwaysLatte · 27/03/2022 20:24

Ooh yes big paddling pool, I forgot that. It was bliss.

VampireMoney · 27/03/2022 20:29

All mine were summer babies and particularly the year DD1 was born it was the hottest I've ever known, I thought I'd melt!! I wore floaty full length dresses in light cotton and they really helped create 'breeze'. Multiple showers and let yourself air dry and keep your hair wet. Plenty of ice water/juice. That's about it really. Oh and bare feet when you're at home. Mine started to swell a bit with DS because I was running around after toddler DD1 when I was pregnant with him. With DD2 I overdid it a bit in the last week or so and had to take a few days bed rest before she came along because the heat wore me out. It only takes a couple of roasting days and you're knackered!

BFPDec21 · 27/03/2022 20:31

Ice lollies, spray fan, feet elevated with cold flannels, flowy dresses. If you have a pool, I'd camp out there. If I could, I'd have all my work Zoom meetings from our family sized blow up pool this summer Grin

Also as a pp said, even if the windows are open, keep curtains closed wherever you can. Our bedroom curtains were closed today and it made a real difference to the rest of the house.

Happymiraclemorning · 27/03/2022 22:28

Another tip- this is just for anyone struggling in the heat.

Open your loft hatch - it lets the heat rise and gives it space to escape.

My friend told me this tip and my upstairs if my house was 50% cooler

Fizbosshoes · 27/03/2022 22:35

DD was born in August there had been a few weeks of 30° weather preceding that. I brought a mattress downstairs and slept downstairs because it was cooler.
I had a pillow you put in the fridge (a chillow) which was good and I used iirc "magic cooling spray" it came in a blue can.
I had 2 or 3 baby doll tops and 2 pairs of shorts that I wore in rotation.

anon2022anon · 27/03/2022 22:37

2 fans in the bedroom- one on rotate cooling the air, the other on you.

Cheap ice pops permanently in the freezer.

Paddling pool for your feet

Work from home if you can, to save on travelling in the heat

Stuff for chub rub- anti chafing cream, cycling shorts

Loose layers- h&m are good for cheap tunic dresses that work as maternity dresses.

Look for bigger/ elasticated sandals. Feet swell, none of my shoes fit during the summer 😭
