Where is REALLY the best place for newborn baby to sleep?

With three months to go I'm trying to get my baby shopping done. I'm getting very confused over what type of bed to get for the baby's first few months, before he goes into a cot. Would like to keep him in the room with me for a few months, and I'm intending to breastfeed.

Options are:

  • Moses basket, maybe with a rocking base (but lots of people have said these are a bit of a gimmick and babies don't like to sleep in them!)
  • Bedside cot, like this one

www.mamasandpapas.co.uk/product-3243028/type-i/

(but how do I know he won't fall through the crack with the bed?)

  • Amby baby hammock (seems quite pricey, but willing to pay if it works)
  • Just using the carrycot from the Bugaboo Chameleon I've bought

I don't really want to co-sleep as I'd be worried about rolling over in the night.

Any ideas please on what works best, don't want to buy something and end up not using it...

If I were you I'd just use the carycot, provided it has a suitable base/mattress. I do like to get away with buying as little as possible though!

I used a carry cot for daytime naps & would have used it at night too if I hadn't co-slept. Saves buying something that you'll only use for a few months although I have heard good things about the amby nest.

lockets24 · 06/01/2008 16:29

in my honest opinion..in its own cot in its room from day one, as a nanny thats what my charges have all done and none have had sleep probs..am 6 weeks pregnant and will do the same for mine!

good luck with whatever you choose!

As the risk of SIDS is much lower if the baby shares a room with his/her parents for the first six months IMO that is much more important, then avoiding sleeping problems by having baby sleep alone from day one.

We had sidecared cot and when DD was small she was asleep in her moses basket placed in the cot. Until she big enough to sleep in our bed/cot properly

Carrycot deffo as you've already got it. You can pop it into the full size cot until the baby outgrows it. Pointless to buy anything else unless you've got money to burn.

bedside cots are great, i've had one this time, as my little one would not settle in a mosesbasket, and he loves it, its great for breastfeeding, and their shouldn't be a gap between it and the bed! also it save buying two things as it can be used as an ordiary cot as well, I've just put the side on mine ds's 7months, and hes very happy to now sleep away from the bed and me, when I need him to, although I enjoy giving him a cuddle! hth

Pheebe · 06/01/2008 16:50

Both our DSs started out in a moses basket next to me (not a rocking one). We were lucky enough to have over generous grandparents who bought a crib which they both went into (DS2 8 weeks has just gone into it) as they outgrew the moses basket very quickly, which allowed them both to stay in our room for longer. DS1 went into his cot in his own room at night from about 4 months as we were disturbing his sleep and DS2 will follow suit when/if we start to disturb him.

Tis a bit OTT to have moses basket, crib and cot I know and if we'd been buying them would have gone for the crib only. Having said that I do feel we've had moneys worth out of moses basket. Because they are low it felt like DSs were still very close to me in bed without the worry of rolling on them! Both DSs used it and will now be used to keep all DS2s toys in downstairs before being passed on to next pg friend.

BTW having bub in the same room as you IS co-sleeping

We have an Amby for 12 week old DD2. It is fab. Shie getting to be rather restless, but the rocking and bouncing soon sends her back to sleep. She sleps from 9.30pm until 6.30/7am DD1 (now 5 1/2)was in a moses basket, but woke quite a few times in the night.

EmMcK · 06/01/2008 16:57

We have the Amby, got it on ebay for 80pound and should be able to sell it for about the same, and it has been fantastic. DS (now 9 weeks)sleeps in it right beside our bed and he has been a great sleeper. If he stirs in the night, I can just give it a wee push or bounce and he is happy. Sometimes he sleeps in it during the day, if i fancy a nap too, otherwise we just got a bouncy chair that lies flat, and naps in that during the day. Also useful for taking into bathroom when you want a shower! Ambys look damn awful on the website, but aren't that big really, probably the footprint of a moses.

Snap Winnie!

harpsichordcarrier · 06/01/2008 17:08

it depends on the baby! and on you.
what is for definite is that having the baby in the room with you for the first six months reduces the risk of your baby dying from cot death.
the other priority is to increase your chances of everyone sleeping!
some babies sleep best right next to you, some need their own space.
I would, personally, use the carrycot you have and save any further expense until you have your baby with you. you may not need anything else.
I would personaly save all the money I could at this stage (unless money is no object at all) so I could stay off work as long as I possibly could.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 06/01/2008 17:09

So do you think the Dreami Carry Cot which comes with the Quinny Buzz would be suitable for baby to sleep in then?

spugs · 06/01/2008 17:13

in your room in the carry cot will be fine , ive ordered a bugaboo and im going to use the carrycot for baby to sleep in downstairs and when were away and a crib i already have.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 06/01/2008 17:14

Excellent! We had wondered about it, so it's nice to be reassured!

MrsBadger · 06/01/2008 17:20

iirc the Dreami is suitable for overnight sleeping but it isn't very big so may not last long, esp if you have a whopper

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 06/01/2008 17:24

hmmm - good to know... will have to keep thinking about this one then... thanks!

juuule · 06/01/2008 17:53

Ours slept in the moses basket and we carried them up and placed the moses basket inside the cot. During the night baby slept either in moses basket or in bed next to me.
I would definitely go with having baby in the same room as you up to six months or at least for the first few months. We would have lost one of ours to cot death if she had been in her own room. The incident happened when she was 8 weeks old.

juuule · 06/01/2008 17:54

You could use the carrycot instead of a moses basket. We've also done that. No difference.

vickyy · 06/01/2008 21:44

hm still not sure. Quite like the idea of the bedside crib as it would mean I could stay in bed to feed...

any more thoughts?

get the bedside cot easy feeding and loads of room for baby as it grows!

JingleyJen · 06/01/2008 21:48

we used the carry cot from our M&P travel system for both of the boys.
They were in our room to start with but DS1 moved to his own room at 6 weeks and DS2 at 2 weeks

fishie · 06/01/2008 21:49

don't rule out co-sleeping yet, there are some pretty straightforward guidelines which may help you to feel more confident.

CloudAtlas · 06/01/2008 21:50

I would have loved a bedside cot, tried to make ours in to a bedside one (!), but in the end gave up and co slept which was brilliant, but even if you do co sleep it is quite a good idea to have an alternative location as well. Mine generally started the night off in a moses basket in the cot in the early days, then when they outgrew the moses basket, they were in the cot in the same location in our room so easier for them to get used to. I would deffo go for the bedside one. Think it's a brilliant idea.

sweetkitty · 06/01/2008 21:52

Another vote for bedside cot, we got one with DD2 so wish I had one for DD1, can't rave enough about how great they are. The mattress is pushed right up against your bed and never did DD2 fall down the gap. When DD2 was about a year we converted it into a regular cot in fact she is still in it now (at nearly 2) but will be getting evicted once DB3 is here.

DD1 I had a swinging crib and she never slept in it, also had moses basket but we never used that either. Moses basket is good for downstairs during the day.

My opinion is get a bedside cot that converts to a regular cot, you won't need anything else they will be in it until they need a bed. You will already have a carrycot from the Bugaboo so I wouldn't bother with a moses basket either.
