Where is REALLY the best place for newborn baby to sleep?

With three months to go I'm trying to get my baby shopping done. I'm getting very confused over what type of bed to get for the baby's first few months, before he goes into a cot. Would like to keep him in the room with me for a few months, and I'm intending to breastfeed.

Options are:

  • Moses basket, maybe with a rocking base (but lots of people have said these are a bit of a gimmick and babies don't like to sleep in them!)
  • Bedside cot, like this one

(but how do I know he won't fall through the crack with the bed?)

  • Amby baby hammock (seems quite pricey, but willing to pay if it works)
  • Just using the carrycot from the Bugaboo Chameleon I've bought

I don't really want to co-sleep as I'd be worried about rolling over in the night.

Any ideas please on what works best, don't want to buy something and end up not using it...

We have a moses basket and at nearly 9 weeks dd is nearly outgrown it, if I was doing it again I'd go for a bedside cot from day one, this is what we are going to get next, easiest way to bf if you don't want to co-sleep imo

We started with a moses basket then moved dd into the Bugaboo carrycot which was great because it was black and cosy and kept the light out! The only problem with it is that it is not a rigid carrycot so if it is not on the pram base it can go a bit squint - saying that we had ours on a moses basket stand for at least 2 months (you will understand what I mean when you get your pram). I know someone who used a baby hammock and they loved it! Dd is still in the room with me at 6 months and I love having her there! A word of warning - newborns are extremely noisy sleepers - lots of grunting and strange noises from such a small thing - but you get used to it and they get quieter as they get older

I am so lazy that I used to fall asleep BFing DD2 and wake up she would be in the middle of the bed and my bum would be in the bedside cot. I actually need a cot the length of a normal bed.

I used the dreami carry cot with my ds. With dd I had a huge wicker moses basket and she hated it. The dreami carry cot is nice because it isn't huge and they can be very snug. I used ot with the moses baket stand, just a bog standard metal one.

I had the Bugaboo carrycot and it was really good - dd3 slept in it for months - its light for lugging up and down stairs as well

Mine slept in the carrycot at first, then into a cot in our room.

Remember though that even if you have a bedside cot/co-sleep you will still need to get up in the night as the baby will need it's nappy changing

I kept a small basket in my room with nappies, wipes, breastpads, nappy sacks and a changing mat so I didn't have to move too far and could change them on our bed.

WARNING - never change a newborn baby on the bed without a changing mat. IT WILL wee/poo on your duvet necessitating changing the cover at 3 am...
