Has a gender scan ever been wrong for you?

Morning All,
I had an early gender scan yesterday evening at 14 weeks (exact) to determine the sex of my baby!
I kept feeling it would be a girl, all my symptoms were pointing in this direction but they told me it was a boy! Over the moon, just not the news I expected tbh! So I was wondering has anybody here had a gender scan that was wrong?
(Baby likes to stay in one position so I had to do a lot of wriggling about, go for a walk and empty my bladder before sonographer could determine)
The sonographer said she 'was happy' with her decision before she handed us the envelope!
Thanks xx

I've often wondered this. I had the opposite, I was sure it was a boy but they say it's our 3rd girl. Gender disappointment is a real thing and I'm sure once our babies are here all will feel right and we will love them like crazy.

Someone I know knows someone who was told the wrong sex.

GrowBabyGrow · 19/03/2022 10:55

There's no guarantee that the sex we're told at a scan is right until they are in our arms, I was the opposite I was convinced I'm having a boy but scan said girl. We'll see in June! Buying all neutral clothing anyway. Most stuff about symptoms indicating sex is old wives tales though so I figure it's probably more likely that the scan is right than our theories about level of sickness or shape of bump.

daisychainsandrainbows · 19/03/2022 10:56

14 weeks is really early! I've never heard of a scan to determine the sex before 16 weeks.

Of course the scans can be wrong and especially that early on. I think it more often tends to be wrong the other way around though as it's easier to miss male genitalia and think girl than it is to incorrectly identify male genitalia when they are in fact female.

Either way your symptoms don't mean much in regards to the sex and I think they're often more old wives tales than anything. Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Yep.
Was convinced I was having a boy but my scan said girl.
Gave birth to a boy! Shocked isn't the word, I couldn't even hold him at first 😬his first pictures he's all dressed in pink.

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/03/2022 11:01

I am surprising they offer gender scans at 14 weeks!?
Thought 16 was the minimum to be clear...

SunnySideUp2020 · 19/03/2022 11:02

Surprised*

Topbird29 · 19/03/2022 11:02

We were told we were having a girl. Luckily we kept everything neutral, and had a boy. Must have been hiding his bits! Luckily we had chosen names for both sexes. But that was at 20 week scan, and they always clearly state that they are not 100% accurate.

bearfood · 19/03/2022 11:04

I know two people who were told girl at early scans then had boys...but both found out at their 20 week scan rather than at the birth.

Topbird29 · 19/03/2022 11:04

And neutral clothing didn't mean all white- got some striped and spotty baby gros in m & s, and h & m did some nice colours as well- green, yellow, purple. This was 10 yrs ago though - no idea what their ranges are now.

Bananarice · 19/03/2022 11:06

My scans were all correct, including the one I had at 16 weeks. I have given birth to four sons.

Dsis in law however, was told her son was going to be another girl. She was shocked and her husband very happy.

RavenclawsRoar · 19/03/2022 11:06

We were told girl at 20w and a later scan found he was a boy Grin

Shmithecat2 · 19/03/2022 11:08

Symptoms aren't indicative of the sex of your baby... my dsis had 2 of each sex and had the same symptoms through all 4 pregnancies.

BlueberryMacaron · 19/03/2022 11:08

If you want to be totally sure, could you afford a NIPT if it’s applicable for your stage of pregnancy. They analyse the chromosomes so less room for error in interpretation.

I was looking into doing a NIPT test earlier this morning. Do you recommend any companies online who offer this? X

Found out sex at 20 weeks with both of my two, said they were boys, absolutely correct.

Yes I'll see what they say at my 20 week scan now! I sent my 12 week dating scan photos (I was actually 11+5) to 2 companies "the nub tech" and "baby gender pros" who both came back with girl! So was really surprised when private scan told me boy yesterday evening x

Yes going to see what the verdict is at 20 weeks! Although I am tempted to book myself in for another gender scan in a couple of weeks with a different company!🙈

Is there a reason you’re so keen to know, OP? Do you have a strong preference either way?

Aww, did they tell you it was a girl at 20 weeks? X

A colleagues daughter was told girl, they bought everything pink, everyone gifted them girly things… and out came a boy! think there’s a lot to be said for waiting til baby’s actually here before buying gendered stuff! I think unless you get one of those blood tests there’s always a chance the scan could be wrong.

Hugasauras · 19/03/2022 11:31

14 weeks is very early; I'm surprised that was offered. I've had one with both DC and 16 weeks was minimum. DD1 we had our scan at 20 weeks and it was very clear. DD2 we had at 16 weeks and the sonographer was 90% sure girl but wanted us to go back to check in two weeks as baby was being a bit awkward. At 18 weeks we went back and it was clear then she was indeed a girl.

Hugasauras · 19/03/2022 11:32

(Although DD2 isn't born yet so can't say with certainty! But if she's a boy she hid her bits exceedingly well Grin)

mrscotton · 19/03/2022 11:36

I was told at my 20 week scan that we were having a girl. Luckily we ended up having growth scans as at 32 weeks, they said they thought it was a boy then at 36 weeks we seen his little bits so knew it was a boy.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/03/2022 11:37

Told girl at every scan where they were able to see. I have two girls. I was adamant both times that I was having boys.

rolopo · 19/03/2022 11:37

I would have put money on that I was having a boy but scan said girl and she is indeed a girl! That was 16 +4 though, 14 weeks is very early.

It's weird because I didn't mind either way but I think whatever she was I would be a happy and sad that it wasn't the other one if you know what I mean!

I was thrilled to have a girl but then I was sad I wasn't having a boy and if I'd have been told boy I would have been thrilled but also sad I wasn't having a girl! It's a weird time when your full of pregnancy hormones! Not sure if anyone else can relate to that or if it was just me haha.
