Has a gender scan ever been wrong for you?

Morning All,
I had an early gender scan yesterday evening at 14 weeks (exact) to determine the sex of my baby!
I kept feeling it would be a girl, all my symptoms were pointing in this direction but they told me it was a boy! Over the moon, just not the news I expected tbh! So I was wondering has anybody here had a gender scan that was wrong?
(Baby likes to stay in one position so I had to do a lot of wriggling about, go for a walk and empty my bladder before sonographer could determine)
The sonographer said she 'was happy' with her decision before she handed us the envelope!
Thanks xx

@TinaYouFatLard

Is there a reason you’re so keen to know, OP? Do you have a strong preference either way?
I've always thought of myself a girl mum tbh, I feel I would just be able to relate/bond more with a girl. I sent my dating scan photos to the nub techs and baby gender pros- they both came back with girl predictions. So the news of being a baby boy has completely surprised me!

I was thrilled to have a girl but then I was sad I wasn't having a boy and if I'd have been told boy I would have been thrilled but also sad I wasn't having a girl! It's a weird time when your full of pregnancy hormones! Not sure if anyone else can relate to that or if it was just me haha.

I was sad for the boy I was convinced I was having and the name we had picked out. I was thrilled for the girl I was having and the name we picked.

Sister was told her third child was her third girl - but it was a boy. She had not found out the sex at her 20 week scan but had to go for a later scan and asked then. She was so shocked when her son arrived!

Angrymum22 · 19/03/2022 11:45

Consultant who did a nucal fold scan at 13 weeks (18 yrs ago they were done privately) and nub theory was only just a thing. He thought I was having a girl but at 20wk scan it was fairly obvious I wasn’t.
DS17 is now a 6’3” strapping rugby player.

Girl/boy mum isn’t a thing. You’ll just be mum to your child and you can do the exact same things with them.

My DD1 is 8 and one of her closest friends is a boy. They play boy games and girl games together.

If it bothers you that much just get a NIPT test. If you can get to London the Fetal Medicine Centre are excellent and cheaper than many.

My mum was told I was going to be a boy. They based it on my slower heart rate and the shape of me (no bum) apparently.

However, at my 20 week scan it was obvious he was a little boy. There was a very distinct penis on the screen. So I guess it depends on whether they got a good look at the genitals?

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 19/03/2022 12:56

I was told boy at 16 weeks, and then girl at 20 weeks. She is indeed a girl.

I think it's very hard to tell at such early scans.

dorisdohnson · 19/03/2022 13:02

I know someone who was told boy/girl for twins and they turned out to be two girls, not sure if it’s harder to tell with twins as they’re a bit more squished

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2022 13:06

NHS 20 week anomaly scan - “probably a boy”.
The “probably” drive us to have a private scan to manage the expectations of a 2 year old DS who really wanted a brother.

Private scan at 22 weeks said it was definitely a girl.
It was.

Mommabear20 · 19/03/2022 13:10

Luckily not us but I know of 5 people who had their babies sex misread

aghhinlaws · 19/03/2022 13:23

It didn't happen to me because it was so obvious it was boy where you didn't have to be a professional to be able to notice the penis which he was at a clear angle as well (20 wk scan) but my friend was told she was having a girl and later gave birth to a boy. My friend also did the gender reveal party and everything that they bought was all pink including a pink bugaboo complete travel set.

@MummyRR if you Google Sneak Peek then you can either get an at home blood test (not hugely reliable) or you can go to a Sneak Peek sponsored clinic and get a blood test via a phlebotomist, which is 99.9% accurate. I had it at 10 weeks.

PumpkinPie2016 · 19/03/2022 21:01

We didn't ask the sex when I was pregnant so obviously doesn't apply to me personally, however, I know a couple of people who were told incorrectly.

When my DS was born, the lady opposite me on postnatal had been told she was having a boy but it was a girl Shock

Someone else a couple of years earlier was told boy and had a girl!

MummyRR · 05/04/2022 10:37

Hey ladies,
So an update. At 14 weeks I was told via ultrasound I was having a baby boy.
I then went onto getting a blood test done (not NIPT) and they've come back telling me it's a girl!

With DD1 the sonographer wasn't sure as couldn't get a good view but said she "didn't see anything that would make her think boy". DD was indeed a girl!

Now expecting DC2 and got a very clear look - it wasn't just the absence of boy bits, there were clear girl bits! So if they come out a boy now I will be flabbergasted!

But yes, scans can be wrong but usually they say "girl" when it's actually"boy". Very uncommon to be told "boy" and then get a girl.

onetwothreeadventure · 05/04/2022 13:05

Keep us updated at the 20 weeks @mummyRR. I always thought a boy was pretty definitive if they saw it on the scan!

With my current pregnancy the baby was face down at 16 and 20 week scan and they couldn't tell either way!

I thought this as well. During the 14 week scan, the baby wouldn't move so I had to go on a walk, loo etc so it was a bit difficult for the sonographer to see. Some people have said 14 weeks is too soon to tell on an ultrasound - a girl's private bits tend to be swollen/puffy which make it look like a boy! I think the blood test is more accurate though?

I will do! I feel I'll be confused even with what they tell me at 20 weeks lol I'm going by the blood test as being more accurate though since they look for the presence of Y chromosome.

That's why I'm so glad that I never found out beforehand. I've got one if each, and it was a lovely surprise when they were born.

What blood test did you have done? Was it the sneak peek clinic?

I have a private scan booked and my partner really wants to know, I'd have preferred a surprise as I don't mind either way, but don't want to be told I've abs it turn out to be the other!

MummyRR · 06/04/2022 09:22

@Poppypip1 not Sneakpeek, the reviews didn't look great saying results were unreliable. I went with a company named alphabiolabs!

Thank you which test did you use? I can't see on their site which would work for sex of baby. Did you do it at home or in a clinic?

Oh sorry it's alphabiolabs who do the checking but the company itself is called GTL DNA. They send the kit out to you at home, but you will need to get your blood drawn by a phlebotomist. I got mine done at a local Superdrug x
