Too old to have a baby?

In your opinion what age would you say is too old to be pregnant with a baby? Is late 30s too old?

Well I'm 16 weeks pregnant at 40... If that helps

BeanStew22 · 16/03/2022 20:16

Late 30s is a typical age for many graduate women to have a first baby so no

This subject has really been done to death though!

sevensleeps · 16/03/2022 20:17

Never too old- just the risks go up with age

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/03/2022 20:21

I know more mums who were 40+ than under 35. Big city though, and I know that tends to skew older.

Starlight2021 · 16/03/2022 20:22

I’d love to know why you’re asking? Is it something you’re considering or just looking to judge older mums?

SQLserved · 16/03/2022 20:24

I don’t think late 30’s is too old. My eggs, however, disagree.

I conceive regularly but haven’t got past 5 weeks in a 2 years. They are too old, don’t divide properly, develop chromosomal issues and miscarry.

If you want children don’t wait around.

ParkheadParadise · 16/03/2022 20:25

I had dd2 at 38 (surprise arrival)
I was definitely the oldest in my antenatal group.
2 of Dd1's friends were pregnant at the same time as me (early 20's) I felt ancient 😉

WhoEvenKnows987 · 16/03/2022 20:25

Thank you everyone! I would love a baby if I was lucky enough to be able to conceive one :) I was just unsure if that would be too old / risk factors but looks more positive to go ahead and try than not!

There are so many factors it’s not that helpful to focus just on maternal age; finances, stability in general , ability to parent lovingly etc.

Spaghag · 16/03/2022 20:27

I work in healthcare. Our postnatal clinic this week had 8 patients. 5 were 40 or over.

While that's not typical, it's also not all that rare.

Our oldest current postnatal patient I believe is 47.

JaninaDuszejko · 16/03/2022 20:28

If you can get and stay pregnant it's not too late. Friend of mine had 3 healthy DC in her 40s.

Beachsidesunset · 16/03/2022 20:28

16 weeks at 45 here ...

MondeoFan · 16/03/2022 20:28

Mid 40's I guess. I'd have a baby if I was 45 or older

MondeoFan · 16/03/2022 20:29

45 or younger I mean

ImInStealthMode · 16/03/2022 20:29

IMO (as a 38 year old with no children, yet) then too old is when you've gone through menopause.

MadameDragon · 16/03/2022 20:30

I was 38 with my youngest and I was the youngest mother on the ward.

beenaroundtheblox · 16/03/2022 20:31

For me I don't think I'd want one past 40. But then I have 2 already. If I hit 40 without any children I'd probably go ahead and try for a few more years

elliejjtiny · 16/03/2022 20:31

I personally didn't want to have babies after my early 30's because of the increased risk of fertility problems, miscarriage etc. However I wouldn't think "she's too old to have a baby" if I met a pregnant woman who was older.

GestationalDiabetes · 16/03/2022 20:31

(I’m pregnant at 43 which hadn’t planned to be but now wouldn’t change for anything as it feels a miracle anytime to me; just be aware of certain factors eg I never knew twins more likely for older mums . And gestational diabetes which I have for the first time. Also certain other risks

drpet49 · 16/03/2022 20:33

40 and over is too old

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/03/2022 20:40

Also want to add that my mum had me, her one and only at 43, almost 44 after years of infertility. Other than having eczema I am robustly healthy Grin.

DemBonesDemBones · 16/03/2022 20:41

For me 37 would be the latest I'd consider having a baby...but ask me again at 38 Grin

Thursday37 · 16/03/2022 20:44

I had my DD at 41, conceived easily and naturally. I think 50+ is questionable but I don’t think there’s really an age limit apart from nature.
In my circles under 30 is considered “too young” with mid 30’s upwards most usual.

Ohyesiam · 16/03/2022 20:45

I had my first at 38 my second at 41

ThatsNotItAtAll · 16/03/2022 20:46

Obviously risk factors increase statistically with age once you're over 35, but you're "too old" once you hit menopause or when peri-menopause really kicks in ...

I personally think there's a point where its questionable to deliberately ttc an additional child and that the ages of both the parents and siblings play into that - by which I mean a first baby at 44 because circumstances haven't made it possible before is a lovely thing and a second baby at 44 with dc1 born two years earlier is also lovely, but personally I wonder about the wisdom of people who say they are deliberately ttc dc3 or 4 when their other DC are in their teens or adults and the parents are very late 30s or 40s or the father is even older... obviously happy accidents are just that, but there can bean age and stage in combination which seems too late for deliberately trying to conceive another child... Plenty of people do it and always claim their late teen children are delighted though...
