Hi everyone as a family we went to the farm today. Sister was stroking a baby lamb. We carried on chatting then she notices a sign saying do not touch if pregnant. She sanitised her hands twice round the farm and scrubbed them at the end with hot soapy water .

At the end she got upset saying she is really early stages of pregnancy and has done a test and is 4 weeks

She’s been reading up on how dangerous it is to touch a lamb. Will she be okay

Yes. She washed her hands well, she’ll be absolutely fine.

MichelleScarn · 09/03/2022 12:56

Sorry as l know she'll be worried, but I did open this to see if she thought she was having a lamb baby...
She's washed her hands, will be fine.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 09/03/2022 12:56

So long as she didn’t put her fingers in her mouth afterwards, she is likely to be fine.

VaulterTech · 09/03/2022 13:00

Sure she will be fine after sanitising.

This did remind me of a ‘Chat!’ Type magazine headline though 🤣

Me too. Grin

I’m sure she’ll be fine OP. She took prompt action.

My understanding is the main risk comes from actually helping deliver the lambs/handing the fluids afterwards.

Presumably the lamb wasn't newborn and she washed her hands so I'd tell her not to worry.

@thats what my understanding was after reading up just now

Sorry OP I laughed at your thread title.
She'll be fine.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/03/2022 13:14

Don’t worry, it won’t cause her any problems.

Avle20 · 09/03/2022 13:19

@MrsSkylerWhite Thankyou

She’ll be fine. Most sheep don’t have the viruses which have the potential to cause issues. If they do have the virus, it’s most likely to be passed on by coming into contact with lambing fluids. The risk from touching a single dry lamb is very small if she washed her hands immediately afterwards.

NuffSaidSam · 09/03/2022 13:25

I thought this was going to be about a magic fertility lamb, bit disappointed it's not, but I'm sure your sister will be fine as she's washed her hands after.

That's made me have a little chuckle Grin

cultkid · 09/03/2022 13:30

She will have already had toxoplasmosis as a child most likely

Abouttimemum · 09/03/2022 13:31

I honestly through she touched the lamb and thought that’s what got her pregnant.

She’ll be fine though OP.

cultkid · 09/03/2022 13:31

It's only a problem if the baby lamb has toxoplasmosis as in it had just be born and had the wet fluid on her and then that your sister hadn't already been exposed to the virus which I would nearly guarantee she has. If she played in the garden as a child I would say she already has had it as a very young child and therefore it doesn't pose a risk to her now

If you google Emily Oster Expecting better, toxoplasmosis it will give you a summary of what I've tried (badly) to explain

SmileSmile best headline I've seen

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 09/03/2022 13:46

My pregnant friend helped with lambing and was fine. Her sheep, her choice, its a risk, but not massive if you wear PPE and wash up properly.

Your sister will be fine as PPs have said, the lamb was dry and not a newborn.

Marvellousmadness · 09/03/2022 13:47

That title 🤣

Well that's a new one on me, it did give me a laugh though.

nearlyspringyay · 09/03/2022 14:09

She really will be fine assuming she didn't lick the lamb's tongue. It will be a very long 9 months!

Me too! My first though was "bloody hell, where did she touch it? Poor lamb!" 😁😁
