How would you describe the first movements of baby?

I’m coming up to 18 weeks and I think I’ve started to feel the baby moving over the last day or two.

The only way I can describe it is slight muscle spasms, with some bubbles and mixed with the feeling that I’ve swallowed a live fish.

The sensation is quite low down, near pelvic bone, so this could genuinely be my digestion. However, I got about 5 mins of this feeling when I first woke up this morning and had a few other 1-2 minutes of it this afternoon.

How would you describe your first movements and how did you know it’s baby and not gas? 😂

Fluttering. Like a butterfly flying in my belly.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/02/2022 15:06

Exactly that. It felt like a goldfish in a bag :)

Firsttimetrier · 24/02/2022 15:09

Ahh this is so exciting! What a strange but amazing sensation and not what I expected it to feel like!

It’s such a nice reminder as I don’t feel pregnant anymore now the sickness and fatigue has passed.

A bit like a mobile phone buzzing down below!

HelloViroids · 24/02/2022 15:11

Mine also felt like muscle spasms/twitches

SpiderVersed · 24/02/2022 15:12

Air bubbles

funder · 24/02/2022 15:18

Tiny piping bubbles at first. Then butterflies a few weeks later and a small child kicking and punching me from inside towards the end Grin

LadyCluck · 24/02/2022 15:21

A fluttering- bit like butterfly wings.

Firsttimetrier · 24/02/2022 15:24

@MerryMarigold oh that’s a good way of describing what I’m feeling! I thought you’d get one ‘kick’ but it’s lots in a row so I’m wondering what on earth they are doing in there 😂.

That’s exactly how I would have described it, like little bubbles

OooohAhhhh · 24/02/2022 15:26

I agree with pp's - exactly like fluttering, and when the baby is a lot bigger (3rd trimester ish) you start to feel them turn their whole body, and it can be quite uncomfortable! But saviour every moment!

LargeInCharge · 24/02/2022 15:28

A butterfly flapping it’s wings.

stackhead · 24/02/2022 15:30

Bubble pops initially. Kind of like a pop-twitch.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 24/02/2022 15:32

Yep to bubbles popping 🥰 I miss that feeling but not the third trimester where they continuously boot you in the lower ribs

Miller2021 · 24/02/2022 15:36

I'm around the same stage as OP and was wondering the same - I felt a really faint fluttering-type movement this morning. I guess they're faint and far apart at first? Makes it hard to know whether you've just imagined it!

Firsttimetrier · 24/02/2022 15:37

@TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo I may regret saying this but at the moment I’m excited to feel a real boot to the ribs! 😂

Tiny little bubbles. I felt them twice as I was drifting off to sleep and doubted it had really happened (at 20 weeks I was DESPERATE to feel him move) then one day I was playing music to him and he just booted my stomach- and the phone- super hard! After that there was no stopping him!
Enjoy every single movement, it really is the most magical feeling in the world 💕

Kinko · 24/02/2022 15:50

I didn't feel fluttering or anything like that.

Mine booted me in the cervix and I almost fell off the sofa it hurt that bad. I yelped so loudly my husband came running. That was the first proper movement. I'd been stressing about not feeling movement for ages - think I was about 21 weeks or so when that happened and from there I started to feel more.

I was very late to feel actual movements because of the location of my placenta which cushioned/muffled it - it was across the front, think it's described as an anterior placenta?

When I was getting movements, I guess I'd describe them as a quickening. Oddly, when it happens it's how you expect it to feel.

Moonbabysmum · 24/02/2022 15:53

Like a fish is swimming in there. By the end it does feel like someone is kicking you though, or often just stretching out their legs inside you!

MrsSantaClausitback · 24/02/2022 15:54

A great description!

Hugasauras · 24/02/2022 15:55

Yes a kind of fluttering, popcorn type feeling.

I'm sure this is massively taboo but I really hate the way it feels. I mean I like it because I know baby is alive, but the actual sensation I really dislike. I find it really uncomfortable. Didn't like it with DD1 and same with DD2. I actually prefer a firm foot to the bladder more than those fluttery, rolling movements Grin

MuchTooTired · 24/02/2022 15:56

It felt like bubbles for me, the very first movements. Towards the end I could feel them fighting, and see it from the outside which was just bizarre. I also could tell which child was on the move from the force of their movement.

bollocksthemess · 24/02/2022 16:10

Like the corner of your eye twitch you get when you’re tired or stressed, but in your belly. Mine were low down at first.

Now I’m 34 weeks with twins and they kick me so hard it gives me a fright at times. They also fight each other most evenings, bodes well for when they arrive 😂

Firsttimetrier · 24/02/2022 16:23

@bollocksthemess yes! That’s the feeling, like an eye twitching. My husband asked if I’ve just got a trapped nerve in my stomach as we could see some flickering on the outside last night.

@MuchTooTired that’s amazing that you can tell which twin is moving!

Something between a twinge and a cramp for me. Not sharp/painful enough to be a cramp or twinge but not exactly normal or comfortable either. I’d say about 24 weeks the movements became more fun. They become more distinguished and feel like kicks but you aren’t yet being beaten up from the inside. By the end you can tell where they are lying, if it was a hand or a foot, a kick or a swish or a head butt. You start to predict which sport they’ll be doing based on how they move. Pretty sure DD is going to be a swimmer or rower because she’d pull her legs close into her body and then suddenly push both out with all her force, like a turn when swimming.
