Help! I ate a medium burger 😭

I’m freaking out, my husband and I ordered some burgers from burger 1, I ordered mine well done and my husband got his medium and I accidentally took two or three bites of his burger thinking it was mine and now I’m panicking. Have I just hurt my baby. It was pink. I’m terrified, please please please if this or something similar has happened to you and your baby has turned out ok please let me know. I asked the nurse at my clinic and she and a doctor said that there is no need to test for toxoplasmosis because it’s very unlikely that I would get it by a undercooked hamburger, but how can I enjoy the rest of my pregnancy when there is a chance that my child could be unwell and it’s all my fault. I’m 25 weeks today 😭😭😭

This is my second pregnancy, my first one ended in a miscarriage and that’s why I have constantly been anxious. It will help hearing other people’s experiences

I think you'll be absolutely fine like the nurse said it's extremely unlikely anything has happened to the baby.

The NHS website states "infection later in pregnancy is more likely to spread to your baby, but any problems that develop are likely to be less severe

It's estimated that only 1 in 10,000 babies is born with toxoplasmosis in the UK."
I didn't know you couldn't have McFlurrys but in summer I had quite a few because well heavily pregnant and hot and my son was born absolutely fine.

It's normal to be anxious during pregnancy especially with your history but try not to worry too much.

Shainago · 24/02/2022 01:40

I had sushi the day before I got a positive test.
Felt like crap.
But baby was fine!

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 01:47

I’m sure it’s fine. Honestly, the proportion of pregnancies that are happy accidents is high, and people do all sorts before they realise, all the time.

The advice is very conservative to minimise risk as much as is humanly possible, BUT the risk is tiny and only relative.

Getting really upset won’t make you feel great but other than that, do you feel okay in yourself? No food poisoning symptoms?

Thoosa · 24/02/2022 01:49

I remember in my last pregnancy absentmindedly scoffing peanut M&Ms quite a few times. And blue cheese once. No problems came of it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/02/2022 01:53

25 weeks? You'll be fine. The baby is mostly built now.

I have supported many women who have done really terrible things during pregnancy, like subsistence level sex work for drugs. And only one of them had a severely impacted baby.

If a couple of bites of undercooked beef was a serious risk, we wouldn't be here. I mean we only invented cooking about 1 or 2 million years ago!

Fate88 · 24/02/2022 01:53

I feel fine, it’s been 5 days and I just can’t stop thinking about it. My husband is coming down with a cold and that makes me nervous.

You will be fine.

It's more harmful to your foetus to worry and create masses of cortisol.

Calm.

Pangolin44 · 24/02/2022 01:58

There will be nothing wrong with your child. That you, eating a slightly rare burger, will have caused.

KosherDill · 24/02/2022 02:00

My mother lived on rare meat, coffee and whiskey during her pregnancy with me, and a packet of cigarettes a day.

I'm healthy, happy, high IQ, never sick with more than a cold lo the many decades.

Don't worry another moment.

Fate88 · 24/02/2022 02:02

Thank you, this makes me feel a lot better. Hearing your stories is the only thing that helps calm me down

monicagellerbing · 24/02/2022 02:09

This isn't a normal reaction OP. 5 days of panic over a burger. I'd suggest you contact your GP or midwife and explain how this has affected you, being this anxious is not good for you or baby.

Bromse · 24/02/2022 02:10

Honestly, a medium burger is going to do you and your baby absolutely no harm. 'Medium' is not raw, it is cooked but a bit pink in the middle. I hope you enjoyed it, now forget it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

What is wrong with peanut M&Ms?
Fate88 · 24/02/2022 02:18

Yeah, I definitely know my anxiety is bad, and it’s not normal. I’ll talk to my doctor about it. But for now reading comments helps

I ate pâte the day before I got a positive test. Nothing bad happened other than me being incandescent about the consultant who earlier in the week had explained I wasn't ovulating and needed drugs to conceive.

Pangolin44 · 24/02/2022 02:29

@Fate88, I'm not an expert on anxiety, but I do think that seeking reassurance is feeding your anxiety rather than calming it.

Do speak to your midwife instead of asking the Internet.

I wish you well.

Very good point.

@Fate88
The beef may not even have been exposed to the parasite.
You only ate a small amount, l really wouldn’t worry.

Happyhappyday · 24/02/2022 02:45

Agree you should see someone about your anxiety, I had a couple of miscarriages and extra anxiety during pregnancy too. You’re at much higher risk of PND post baby and it’s a great idea to get some professional support in place if you’re already feeling that anxious.

Unknown6 · 24/02/2022 07:06

@Feather12, nothing wrong with peanuts or peanut m&ms as far as I'm aware x

LKL8919 · 24/02/2022 07:10

I ate the bloodiest beef joint on whilst 5 months pregnant in a restaurant in Paris. Everyone was looking at me like I was insane Grin DC came out just fine and loves meat

LKL8919 · 24/02/2022 07:10

Congratulations on your pregnancy too! Thanks

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 24/02/2022 07:16

It will be absolutely fine. Have you got a really good book on the go? I find reading something absorbing really helps to distract from anxious thoughts. Or reread some childhood favourites.

mugoftea456 · 24/02/2022 07:19

I had a brain fart last week and at pate. I'm not going to get worked up about as I can't change it now.

Don't worry op.
