Worry wart wondering about early symptoms of pregnancy

I am about 5 weeks pregnant and wondering how soon I can expect some 'real' symtoms of pregnancy to kick in. All I've had so far is very occasional slight feelings of nausea and possibly my boobs are bigger. Otherwise I feel completely normal. Am I worrying for nothing - is is too early to feel as 'sick as a dog'? Can I expect to gradually feel worse? I'd feel relieved if I did! Is a lack of symptoms a sign of things going wrong? Is it true than the sicker you are the healthier your pregnancy is? I was also wondering that if you are prone to bad sea sickness and other nausea when not pregnant, are you prone to getting worse nausea during pregnancy? Almost like a 'nausea threshold'.

Sorry about all the questions but I don't want to tell any of my friends who have babies yet!

I have only just found I am pg with #3. I am 5 weeks on Sunday. Like you have no symptoms yet - other than occasional nausea and occasional discomfort with bbs. I also have period pains - but I am not too worried about that as I had them with my other pregnancies.
I don't think that 'proper' nausea kicks in until 6 weeks or so - but don't forget - not everyone gets it bad/much/at all. I only had gentle waves of nausea on and off in the first trimester with ds1 and ds2. I was never physically sick with either pregnancy. I considered myself to be VERY lucky. I had a friend with her head down the loo for almost the entire first trimester!!! No thanks!
Every pregnancy is different.

MummyToSteven · 18/11/2004 19:34

your symptoms sound about par for the course to me!

not everyone gets morning sickness - think I have read its 50/50, so I wouldn't read too much into any connection between sickness and health of PG. Also no two pgs are the same as well just to confuse things.

at your stage of pg all i really noticed was very mild nausea and bigger boobs - it took another few weeks for the nausea to turn into retching, and the retching into being sick.

honeybunny · 18/11/2004 19:45

I had no symptomes until week 6 when vomiting started with avengence. No boob tenderness or enlargement until about week 16, just lots of bleeding. V unnerving at the time, and didnt stop until week 11.5. Skin erupted in spots by about week 9. And hair suddenly going 5days before needing a wash (usually every other). My biggest give away is kneeling/squatting down to get something off a low shelf and then passing out as I get up from about 3.5weeks. Actually fainted completely this time at around 14weeks and cracked the back of my head on a door frame as I fell and was unconscious on the landing- ds1 patiently waiting on the loo for a bum wipe at the time and ds2 just waking up. Not funny!

fells · 18/11/2004 20:11

Thanks everyone however it might be for nothing just been to toilet and noticed a bit of pale pinky, brown on my pants and on the loo roll. Sorry to be graphic! Immediately did a test and line still there but I'm convinced it is slightly lighter than yesterday. Test is one you are recommended to do in the morning and I did it 10mins ago but I also did a test at a similar time yesterday. Should I assume the worst? Anything else to look out for by way of miscarriage symptoms? How many go wrong at this time?

I understand your anxiety about this, i was the same. I couldnt wait to feel sick and pregnant. It came at about week 6 for me too and lasted till week 17! I was really pleased about this because to me it was a good sure sign that every thing was ok.
It seemed to me also that time went so very slowly, you know, a week seemed to last for ages! I was desperate to reach week 12, then week 22 and they seemed to take for ever to come round. So what im saying i suppose is that you sound like you are progressing ok, at a normal pace and any time soon, you will start with the symptoms. Dont let people feel sorry for you because if you are like me, you will welcome these symptoms with relief and joy. Good luck, and enjoy, you are so very very lucky to have that baby safe inside you x

Donbean · 18/11/2004 20:21

OMG, im sorry, that last message was posted before your last one about your other worries, please dont think that i am bieng insensitive. Feel terrible now. so sorry

Donbean · 18/11/2004 20:21

Oh Fells. are you ok?

Mirage · 18/11/2004 20:23

Hi Fells,

I was told by a fertility nurse, that lighter/darker pregnancy tests
don't indicate anything at all about the viability-it is just the amount of dye in the individual tests that come up differently.

I had no symptoms other than sore boobs with dd & I didn't get them until nearly 7 wks. This time I felt no different at all until 7wks,didn't even have sore boobs. At 7 wks though,I statred to feel queasy about 2-3pm every day, which was a bit of a shock as I'd never had m/s before. At 11wks + this has just about gone.

Apparently the theory that the sicker you are-the healthier the pregnancy is a myth.I know loads of people who had no m/s & had healthy babies. My Dr told me that they just say that to people suffering from bad sickness as it is reassuring & helps them get through it.

The pinky brown discharge may be implantation bleeding, which is common & one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.

I hope it all goes well for you-your symptoms or lack of them sound perfectly normal to me.

MummyToSteven · 18/11/2004 20:24

fells - bleeding/spotting is quite common and the pg can still be ok after bleeding/spotting, although of course it can unfortunately be a sign of miscarriage. i had a few days light brown bleeding and cramps with my pg, and everything was fine.

i would go to the GP and mention the BFP and the spotting. aside from anything else it can be an early sign of a urine infection.
i would keep a particularly watchful eye on any severe stomach/shoulder pains, just in case (v. unlikely) it is an ectopic pg.

best of luck to you

Donbean · 18/11/2004 20:26

Yes. i meant to add also that the discharge could be implantation bleed, where baby is attaching itself firmly to the uterine wall. That is what i was told by the experts.
Again, very best of luck, thoughts are with you worry wart x

fells · 18/11/2004 20:40

Thanks!
Mummytosteven, what is BFP? Sorry not up with abbreviations!
Is there any point going to the doctors if a miscarriage happens this early? Would it be for reassurance? How soon can you start trying again?

lou33 · 18/11/2004 20:42

big fat positive, I believe

fells · 18/11/2004 20:44

When can an implantation bleed usually happen? I thought it was about 8 days after ovulation.

OP posts:
babybob · 18/11/2004 20:44

i didnt have any signs of pregnancy what so ever didnt feel sick or was sick but my sis in law was sick all the way though people are different i was the same as you though when i was 4-5 weeks worried because i didnt have any signs hopefully your be the same and have a happy healthy pregnancy good luck and all the best

MummyToSteven · 18/11/2004 20:49

i always thought implantation bleed was around same time as period, but could be wrong. another cause of bleeding could be a threatened miscarriage. noone ever really knew whether my bleeding was an implantation bleed or threatened miscarriage - both those words were bandied about by the docs to me.

if you do end up being certain you have m/c then there probably isn't a great deal your GP could do; if you are in any doubt at all as to whether you are still PG, or feel generally unwell at all then it is best to go and get checked out anyway imho.

opinion on how soon after to try varies from immediately to waiting 3 months. from a practical point of view it is better to wait till after a first period post m/c to avoid problems dating a pg.

aloha · 18/11/2004 20:55

You honestly don't have to feel sick to be perfectly normally pregnant. I'm 27 weeks into my second pregnancy and have never once been sick. I did feel a fleeting moment of mild nausea once this time and had to push away a fishcake (!) but that was it. My little boy is as 'real' as anything and twice as lovely. I think it's a wonderful, wonderful bonus not to be sick. Don't wish it on yourself, it can be absolutely vile.

aloha · 18/11/2004 21:01

Sorry, didn't see your second message. Its important to remember too that bleeding is also very, very common - really it is - and it certainly doesn't mean an inevitable miscarriage. Far from it. I had it for weeks this time round, from around 6weeks to 14 weeks - on and off, mostly brown, but also pink and some red with a day of quite heavy, period-like bleeding. I'm absolutely fine. Taking more tests is truly pointless though I can truly understand your anxiety and upset. If the bleeding continues, gets worse or you start to cramp you can go to an early pregnancy unit in a hospital. Don't know where you are, but you will have one quite near you. From about six weeks you can often see the baby's heart beating on the screen. Wishing you luck, and please don't panic.

aloha · 18/11/2004 21:02

Most bleeding in pregnancy is essentially unimportant. And you can't tell if it is going to be a miscarriage, but mild spotting with no pain isn't by any means a sure-fire sign of a forthcoming miscarriage.

Bozza · 18/11/2004 21:24

My main symptom during early pregnancy was exhaustion. But again was only just starting to feel this at your point in time. In fact I didn't even do my first test until 5 weeks with either pregnancy.

MommyD · 19/11/2004 09:46

fells - I had some pinky brown cm too this week. Just a small amount. Enough to get me thinking. It went away. I have not had this before with my other pregnancies - but am not unduly worried.... I have read that it does happen..

LittleB · 19/11/2004 12:37

Fells, Hope everything works out for you, try not to worry about it. I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and sickness didn't start until about 7 weeks, to answer your question about other sickness affecting MS, this was true for me. I was only sick once and that was travelling in the back of a friends car - did get them to pull over - I used to get car sick when I was younger and this seemed to push my nausea over the edge. Also felt sick driving but found the sea-bands from boots helped a bit, my sickness is now almost gone - although I'm still very tired!

Hi there fells. As the others have said, bleeding certainly does not necessarily mean things are going wrong. I am 12wks 3d now and have had little pink, brown and some red spots in my CM from about 6 weeks and lost a brown clot last week, but all is fine. If the bleeding gets worse or you have pain, it's a good idea to go to your doctor or your local Early Pregnancy Unit and see if you can get a scan. At 5 weeks it will probably be too early to see a heartbeat so you may need another one done in a week or two. But bleeding in pregnancy is very common and most episodes of bleeding are resolved and the pregnancy continues normally. I really hope everything is OK with you.
As far as symptoms are concerned: I have had basically no sickness/nausea (every now and then I feel the tiniest weeniest bit queasy in the evenings, but that is really it), have mostly not even had to pee more often, and my boobs are only a little enlarged and only sore on and off. The one thing I have had is tiredness and a drop in my stamina (and organisational skills!). I know how it feels to worry about having no symptoms and wonder whether you 'really are' still pg... But each pregnancy is so individual and every woman will feel different. Hope this helps! Thinking of you. Let us know how things are going, won't you?

fells · 19/11/2004 16:35

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for all your support - everyone is so helpful.

Just got home from a stressful day at work due to worrying about this m/c thing. I've had a little bit more spotting - light brown /pale pinkish but I have to say if you didn't have good eyesight you possibly wouldn't see it at all. I will see what the weekend holds and maybe go to the Doctors on Monday.

Does anyone know if m/c's are hereditary?

Is the darkness of the line on a test kit really that relevant? Isn't it likely to be different darknesses at different times of the day?

What is special about the clear blue digital test?

Have a lovely weekend. Try not to worry too much. I do know exactly how you feel and how panicky it feels to see blood, but a little bit of spotting really doesn't mean the end for so many of us. And I've never been sick and feel very lucky! Good luck and do something nice to take your mind off it, even if it's only a DVD and a takeway.
