13 weeks pregnant and I can’t stand meat! Anyone else had this?

I’m 13 weeks pregnant and I really hate meat for the last 3 weeks and can’t stomach it at all.
Has anyone else had this or any other weird experiences with foods they have gone off or ate?
It’s not the worse thing to go off to be honest but I just can’t stomach meals and only want small bites and snacks so trying to opt for healthy snacks as I did go through a pancake stage.
Do you think it would be ok to have more smoothies and shakes at this point?

I totally went off meat for a while in my first pregnancy - especially chicken! For weeks I’m mostly ate pasta with ricotta cheese / macaroni and just tried to have healthy snacks and take a good prenatal vitamin. I’d say just eat whatever you can stomach - my meat aversion did go away at some point in the second trimester.

Whatisgoingonhere · 05/02/2022 19:38

I had this during one of my pregnancies and I’m only just getting over it a few years later!

I used to enjoy eating meat before but the smell of it cooking turned my stomach so much from about 5 weeks into the pregnancy. And I couldn’t handle the smell and texture of cooked salmon either (used to love it).

I craved dairy though, so definitely had more smoothies with lots of protein rich foods and fruits/vegetables, and Greek yoghurt. I made sure I kept up with my pregnancy supplements too.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

WalkingOnSonshine · 05/02/2022 19:42

Yep exactly the same, all the way through.

DS is now 13 months and we’re definitely still eating more veggie food, maybe meat 2-3 times a week rather than every night pre-pregnancy.

I was just talking to DD1, saying that when I was pregnant with her I just didn't want to eat. Especially anything healthy.

I remember trying to eat a jacket potato with cheese and beans (one of my absolute favourite meals) and couldn't get it down. Every mouthful just made me gag. I'm not great with meat at the best of times so ate very little as it would have sent me over the edge!

I didn't even have "morning sickness" I just completely lost my appetite! When I got it back I craved dairylea sandwiches.

I agree that you should eat whatever you can stomach - if that's a smoothie then I'm sure that would be fine. My healthy diet went completely out of the window.

From the baby's health point of view - they'll be fine as they're draining you of your nutrients. It's the woman that suffers! Smile

Yep first time I was vegetarian the whole pregnancy and the second I could only stomach chicken. Anything with sinew would make me vom

Spottybutterfly · 05/02/2022 20:11

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and totally off lots of food. But chicken is the most noticeable, normally I'd eat it 3-5 times a week, can't stand the thought of eating it.

Bettyconstance · 05/02/2022 20:12

Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I’m glad I’m not being weird and this does happen.
@BusySittingDown jacket potato, cheese and beans is one thing I can stomach but it’s odd how somethings change for people.
I don’t like fish either at the moment, I think I will stick with the smoothies just to get something in me and ensure baby gets fed.
Bring on the second trimester, I hope I have energy and start liking food again. 🤞🏻

I was vegetarian at the time and had a beef craving (yes I ate it) baby wants what baby wants. You don’t have to eat meat to get your protein.

Sailor2009 · 05/02/2022 20:15

For 4 weeks of my first pregnancy I existed on crumpets with melted cheese and McDonald's quarter pounders with cheese. The thought of eating anything else made me gag. For the whole pregnancy I couldn't stand garlic, and I have garlic in pretty much every meal. This pregnancy haven't gone off of anything at all.

Harlequin1088 · 05/02/2022 20:16

My main aversion was from about weeks 6-11 and it was chicken I couldn’t stand. The taste of it, the smell of it being cooked, even the thought of it being in the house was enough to send me over the edge. I’m 30 weeks pregnant now and can eat it again but those 5 or so weeks in the first trimester were really strange. I just couldn’t believe how strong the aversion was!

Bettyconstance · 06/02/2022 06:22

I can’t stand the thought of chicken and some foods and smells make me gag to the point where I try to be sick but nothing comes out but water. It’s a really odd sensation and can happen when I’m walking down the street just thinking about meat. However, I could eat cereal for every meal and fruit.
Im glad some of you have got your appetite back. My SO is calling me baby bear at the moment as everything needs to be just right, I feel like I’m being such an annoying ‘princess’ about it all! (Which I am, lol!) I hope it passes soon.
I hope everyone else’s pregnancy is some sailing from here.

100 %

mowly77 · 06/02/2022 06:57

Yep I did too especially red meat! Just couldn’t stand to even look at it. And I have never gone back to meat … it went from being a pregnancy thing to an ethical decision.

Pinkmagic1 · 06/02/2022 07:01

I went off chicken during my first pregnancy 18 years ago, to the point I couldn't even look at a photo in a cook book without feeling ill!
Even all these years on, although I can eat it, it would not be my meat of choice. Previously I had really enjoyed it.

eurochick · 06/02/2022 07:04

Yes I had this. I remember having to do a client meal out at a very posh steak restaurant. I ordered the chicken and moved it around my plate for a bit trying not to vom.

KohlaParasaurus · 06/02/2022 07:26

I went right off meat in one of my pregnancies, with my third child, including heaving as I passed the pet food aisle in the supermarket because I could imagine the smell of the contents of the tins and having to leave the table at a work Christmas meal and sit outside when the turkey course was served. The baby grew up to be a very fussy eater and because vegan as soon as she discovered it was an option. I didn't have the same problem in my other pregnancies.

Hm2020 · 06/02/2022 07:34

I’m a big meat eater but totally went off meat for my hole pregnancy my love for meat came back a few weeks after birth. Weirdly my son is 7 and he rarely eats meat.

sqirrelfriends · 06/02/2022 07:48

Yup, mainly chicken and fish. It actually took me about a year to want to eat chicken again.

Dry crackers, fruit and yogurt we're all I could eat from 6-15 weeks.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/02/2022 07:58

In all of my pregnancies the smell or siggt of chicken made me heave. Family joked they knew when I was pregnant as I was off chicken again. It lasted throughout each pregnancy but I always returned to 'normal' after giving birth

RestingStitchFace · 06/02/2022 08:18

I was exactly the same. Barfed my guts up after eating a sausage and was practically veggie for first trimester. Just make sure you are taking iron supplements, OP.

MsTSwift · 06/02/2022 08:21

In my first pregnancy I had severe aversion to red meat and lots of other food. It got to the point where the only food I could face was white toast eggs and carrots. Dark veg repelled me too. It was only the first half of pregnancy though

1Step2Step · 06/02/2022 08:24

I was vegetarian (now pescatarian) and I could literally smell the butchery from the supermarket entrance. Every time I went grocery shopping all I could smell was blood.

Also went off all hot drinks, dairy (especially ice cream ), coffee etc.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/02/2022 08:25

I went off spicy food ( normally add chilli to everything) and craved puddings when I usually don't have a sweet tooth !
My ds loves sweet things and hates spice , so I think he was telling me something.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 06/02/2022 08:27

Yep.

1st pregnancy- aversion to read meat. I was once afraid of opening the fridge because I knew there was a packet of mince in it... I couldn't even look at it. I caught sight of steak on TV once and was violently sick. TBF I had hypermesis. I had tuna and eggs instead...

Last pregnancy- no hypermesis but poultry still made me feel sick. Christmas Dinner was stomach-churning. I could only tolerate... red meat Grin go figure

Both aversions passed quickly after the DC were born.

Good luck
