CVS needed following 12 weeks scan and bloods

Hi,

I just got told baby has a high chance of downs syndrome. Had my 12 week (which turned out to be 13 week scan) last Thursday. Have opted for CVS as wanted a definitive answer.

Feeling sad and scared and wanted to hear from others. I'm having the test on Friday.

Anyone else in the same situation.

@Unknown6 sending you lots of strength I've been in the same position and know the awful mix of emotions running through you right now.
Just be kind to yourself, try not Google as you'll find more positive that negative stories but your mind will cling to negative ones.
I was 1 in 4 chance of downs and 1 in 30 something for edwards and the other I can't spell!
My scan was fine and they took a week to ring me to say I was high risk so it knocked me over to be honest. My main issue was my very low PAPP-A 0.1 (think it's suppose to be 1).
I had the CVS and all came back okay. The CVS is never going to be the most enjoyable thing but honest it was not as bad as I expected and then after just try and do nothing just watch rubbish TV and relax. Your mind and body will have gone through the mill.
It wasn't the end of my story for my little girl as she had confirmed placenta mosaicism with a different chromosome that was picked up as she was very small and ended up having an amino later in pregnancy but still all turned out fine, she's a healthy 2 year old.
The time between now and Friday try keep busy even if it's a walk or a cuppa.
All the best xx

Thank you for your message. I feel so unsettled and sick now.
I'm able to keep busy as I just started a new job (but that also makes this feel harder, I'm going to tell my boss tomorrow)

How long does it take for the CVS results to come back? Do you know/ remember?

I've had two CVSs and one Amnio. None of them caused any harm to the babies I was carrying. The tests themselves were very straight-forward. But still, it's all sorts of horrible and so anxiety-inducing. I really, truly feel for you and I'm so sorry that you're in this place.

One CVS and one amnio (two different pregnancies) resulted in the diagnoses of two babies with trisomies.
But my last litte one is now going on 8 years old; happy, totally healthy, and playing Nintendo games as I type.
I can't remember how long the results took... not long for the CVS, from memory, but how long? I am not sure. Amnio took much much longer but then, it looks for more trisomies than CVS.
Sending you healthy hugs for the very best outcome.

Tiredmum31111 · 31/01/2022 16:15

@Unknown6 I think it was 2 days from memory.
Mine was over Christmas and new year and around lots of bank holidays but I can't remember thinking the CVS results took long.
I know its easier said then done keeping busy. I really hope by this time next week your mind can rest and hopefully enjoy your pregnancy again xx

How old are you OP?

RoseMAR · 31/01/2022 17:05

Hi OP, I had this done last year and understand how awfully worrying it is.

I was 25 at the time, baby at the 12 week scan had a high risk of DS. I had the CVS done 4 days later, and results 3 days after that - negative for all abnormalities.

The worrying was the worst part, the build up to having it done and then the wait - especially when DH couldn't be there in the room. The procedure was more uncomfortable than anything as you have to lay very very still, but there was little to no pain. They observed baby for about 20 minutes afterwards and were happy. We then waited a further 30 minutes in a private room to make sure I had no pain or any bleeding. You'll be a little sore afterwards but that's just where the needle went. 2 days after the results, so 7 days after the procedure, I had some period cramping and light spotting so my local hospital admitted me for 48 hours for monitoring to be on the safe side because I'd had a CVS, baby was continuously scanned and no harm was done - it was just some irritation to my uterus, similar to how orgasming (sorry TMI) in the 3rd trimester can cause some cramping as your uterus contracts.

Wishing you well OP, I really feel for you xxx

I'm 38, this is my first pregnancy.

@RoseMAR, thank you for sharing with me in detail. Trying to keep an open mind to it all.

@Unknown6 the waiting is definitely the worst part, try and keep yourself busy and as a PP has said, try and stay off of Google.

Sending you hugs ❤️

So your age alone will have bumped your chances up.

You said your 12 week scan was actually a 13 week scan so the NT measurement will have been slight more which also bumps it up.

May I ask which hospital you have booked your pregnancy at, or which Trust?

HoneyPea · 31/01/2022 17:39

I had my 12week scan at 13+4, baby had a high NT. Came back as 1:7 for Down's syndrome so had a NIPT which came back high risk. I had an amniocentesis last Monday and got the results 3 days later.

Unknown6 · 31/01/2022 19:01

@HoneyPea, I hope your results were OK. X

Unfortunately not. Baby is positive for Down's syndrome also a consultant scan has found heart problems (including pulmonary stenosis), a cyclic hygroma and that the membranes are detaching from the baby 💔 Going to hospital tomorrow to discuss next steps with the consultant. Hope your results are better x

Unknown6 · 31/01/2022 20:06

@HoneyPea, I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm sending you a huge amount of hugs x

I was advised to have amniocentesis when I was pregnant at nearly 39 (my only pregnancy) . I instead had the harmony test. There's zero risk. And the results are amazing. As well as having an additional scan at the same time that is far more in depth than that provided by the nhs. I would be considering this if you can. Zero risk. If necessary you could then have cvs if results weren't favourable and if that would change your perspectives regarding continuing the pregnancy.

holdonbaby · 31/01/2022 22:35

@Unknown6 just to offer some support although I've not been through this.

I'm very early days and over 40, if I am lucky enough to get to the 12 week scan I partly expect the high chance due to my age. Your age has most likely pushed the result chances higher too.

Not being rude but I also read if you have high bmi (I have) apparently that can push it up too.

What was your high, like 1 in 5 or 1 in 40?

Will be watching for updates.

Do you feel you need to tell work at this stage? Big hugs.

This is the reason I asked about which Trust you're booked at OP.

If you're anywhere near Manchester MFT offer the harmony test at no cost. X

I know everyone said don't Google, but I checked NT measurements and that looks to be within the normal range, so that made me feel better. Its the bloods that gave out the results.

I don't have a high BMI I'm right in the middle apparently.

I'm going to tell work today, I'm 3 weeks into a new assignment, so I feel I need to explain.

My age didn't make any difference to my result, it was that my pappa was so low and my blood so high.

Honestly, do look into the non invasive testing.

CameraCoffeeCrochet · 02/02/2022 13:47

Just sending some hugs 💐 and I hope everything turns out ok for you.

I'm in limbo at the moment, over 40, high bmi , previous miscarriage, and after my 12 week scan was told I had a 1 in 3 risk of Edwards/Patau syndrome. Shocking really, had the Nipt come back as no result twice and so I've been scanned to look for soft markers and then advised to have an amnio. Feeling very sad and fed up of waiting so I know how hard things are. I've got 9 days to wait for the amnio and they've said it will take 3 days for the results.
I just want a normal pregnancy.

Unknown6 · 02/02/2022 14:55

@CameraCoffeeCrochet, Im sending you hugs too.
I heard a few people say that about the NIPT, so don't take it as a negative sign.

My risk is less, I can't remember the exact ratio as I was just shocked to get the call. I know I was low risk on edwards/ Patau, in my case Downs was the risk.
Make sure you can bed rest for 24 hours after, that's what the hospital told me.

All, I had procedure this morning. The worst bit was the local anesthetic. Feel a bit like I have muscle cramps and procedure finished about 40 minutes ago

They said it looks like good signs, but results will confirm next week.

Thinking of you, take it easy today.

Carebear99 · 04/02/2022 13:50

springblossom22 · 04/02/2022 14:44

Thinking of you, rest up and try and keep distracted until the results (easier said than done) xx
