Two empty sacs at 6 week ultrasound

Hi all,

I had a MMC last year- only picked up in 11th week of pregnancy because had no bleeding, baby stopped growing at 8.5 weeks.

TTC since the mc, finally got a BFP last month. Had a private, early scan today as I felt worried about loss of symptoms, although didn't have raging ones to begin with. The scan showed two empty gestational sacs. The sonographer said it was either a case of an early loss of a twin pregnancy, or less likely, I could be less far along than I thought. I was 6 weeks + 1 today, going by LMP.

I am trying to cling onto any sort of hope...did anyone have an early scan at 6 weeks (or early first trimester) and see an empty sac, but go on to have a successful pregnancy?

Thanks xx

@GirlMama21 wishing you luck for tomorrow

kittykat33 · 20/01/2022 20:22

Hi,

Yes I had this recently - I had a scan at EPU at 6+4 due to bleeding. Only sac & yolk present.
Same options given as you.
Had a follow up scan 14 days later (today) & saw baby with heartbeat.

I'm not out of the woods as I'm still bleeding & another follow up in 2 weeks but there is hope.

Fingers crossed for you Thanks

Thank you @Funauntienowmummytobe , @SantoPalo and @kittykat33, your kindness is touching ❤.

Beautiful to hear your experience @kittykat33, hope you continue to have a healthy and safe pregnancy x

As much as I'm dreading the scan tomorrow, being in limbo is so much worse- if I'm harbouring secret, false hope, then I'd rather know if there is none and get on with the process of coming to terms with it...

Thank you ladies, to each and every one of you who took the time to read, think of me and message. Such small acts of kindness are really touching in difficult moments ❤.

Couldn't bring myself to post sooner after the scan. They still saw two sacs, bigger than last time. One was still completely empty, but the other had what the sonographer described as could be the appearance of an early- not fully developed- yolk sac. Due to the latter they couldn't diagnose a confirmed miscarriage today, have given me a rescan date of 31st Jan to see what happens to it, whether it grows. I would love to hold out hope for a happier story like @kittykat33 regarding that sac and maybe beginnings of a yolk sac, but they warned me the next scan is highly likely to be the actual diagnosis of confirmed miscarriage. The dates are so off- should be 6+6 today by LMP- so they are not hopeful that whatever it is will actually turn into a viable pregnancy. Sonographer noted both sacs are less than 5 weeks gestation (which is what the private scan also noted 5 days ago, so not been much progress since). Given my LMP was 4th Dec and I first got a positive pregnancy test on 29th December, things just don't fit with me being less than 5 weeks as per the size of the sacs. So they point to failed pregnancies, just need confirming with a scan, again....

Was expecting this news, but it's still like a hammer blow. Worst part is knowing you've miscarried and it's another missed one so no bleeding etc- prolonged agony to start the process of miscarrying and coming to terms with it- though I'm wondering if I might start bleeding before the rescan.

I'll update after the scan on 31st Jan, but I think we know what the end will be 💔. I really hope anyone in a similar situation at the moment has a much better outcome than we have had today xx

@rainbowzebra05

My eldest was an empty sac at 6 weeks. At my 12 week scan my dates were moved backwards - it seems i ovulate late so my dates were a week behind where they should have been by LMP.

I had an early scan at the end of this week at what should have been 5+2 and didn't even see a sac. Hoping there'll be something there end of this coming week, but the sonography said it wasn't uncommon at this gestation so I'd query the "not even 5 weeks" bit personally, mine said that so many don't see anything until a fair bit into the 5th week!

Do let us know how you get on @rainbowzebra05, would love to hear a positive story x

RedPandaFluff · 21/01/2022 20:04

Ahh no @GirlMama21 . . . not the happy outcome we hoped for for you - so sorry Sad

Funauntienowmummytobe · 21/01/2022 20:08

@GirlMama21 I'm so sorry it wasn't the news you were hoping for. As it is so hard to measure accurately so early, I am hoping you will have better news at your next scan ❤ do what you need to do for the next few days, try to stay positive. Thinking of you.

laurenGame · 22/01/2022 12:51

@GirlMama21 I was thinking of you today , I've also been through this waiting game (a week, then another week again...) due to bleeding so I can Imagine the agony of not knowing and the worry.
Advice that helped me was to watch trashy tv - I was staring into Netflix all evenings and it seemed to help me pass the time (I don't watch tv normally). X

GirlMama21 · 22/01/2022 21:10

Thanks everyone, your kind words mean so much ❤.

My head is all over the place- I keep telling myself the fact there was something in one of the sacs that looked like an early yolk sac is progress from the scan 5 days earlier which was just 2 empty sacs. But the midwife was very negative and warned me not to get my hopes up that it could continue into a viable pregnancy😔. I keep having nightmare thoughts that they'll give me miscarriage options after the next scan when pregnancy might have progressed if left to continue.

The dates seem sooo off, but I've just read a load of old threads on here where women have seen only sacs or sac and yolk sac only at earlier scans and then at subsequent scans a HB and baby. So as much as they were making out there is no hope, I am clinging on. Guess only the next scan will tell, the 31st seems sooo far away 😑.
