Inconclusive nipt harmony test twice...worried

I had an inconclusive harmony test at 10 weeks exactly, I wasn't too worried as it was really early, I was on blood thinners, and a higher bmi of 30, all of which can lead to an inconclusive result.

Had my redraw at 13+2, and results have come back the same, inconclusive due to low fetal fraction. 4% at least is needed for accuracy. I had stopped blood thinners prior to this redraw.

Im 38 and its an ivf pregnancy. Scan at 12+3 looked normal. I'm in ireland and bloods aren't done.

I'm just looking for any positive outcomes from anyone in a similar situation...it seems there is a slight risk of t13/t18 with this result...

I was offered a 3rd draw, wait for my anatomy scan at 21 weeks, or get the amino. I feel lost...

Another option could be to take a different NIPT test. The clinic where I had it done said they used to use Harmony but swapped to Vision as it requires a lower fetal fraction and has less false positives. They said they haven't yet had a case where they couldn't get a result. You can take all this with a grain of salt in case the clinic has other motives for promoting Vision. It could be a waste of money of course.

Thank you for replying, I'm in ireland and all clinics seem to only offer the harmony, so it doesn't look like I have any other options unfortunately...so frustrating and stressful...

Yes my wife was pregnant with our son (now 4 months) also an ivf pregnancy and she has a similar BMI, had it done three times and didn't work.

In the end we gave up and didn't have anymore redraws, apparently it's more common in IVF pregnancies that it doesn't work.

No issues with our son.

Good luck!

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 13:15

Thank you so much, that is reassuring...a lot of people seem to get results after the 2nd draw so it's had me worried, nice to know I'm not alone in this! Was further testing recommended after the 3rd time?

And congratulations on your son!

Panorama is offered in Ireland too. Evie in Sandyford offer it for a start. Where are you located?

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 14:23

Hey, thank you, Im in Cork so not sure that I fancy heading to Dublin, but I'll have a think on it...I don't know am I mad but I'm leaning towards getting the amnio as I just want to know for certain,or am I jumping the gun!

Slightly different and I was only testing for Edwards or Patau's but I was unable to get measurements on my 12 week scan so couldn't have testing. We couldn't afford a NIPT really.

We decided that as things appeared normal and that really we probably wouldnt of acted on any results we'd see what came at the 20 week scan and if it was the worst we would prepare for baby to hopefully be an organ donor. However after the 20 week scan and some growth scans it seems all is ok.

Personally I wouldn't be touching an amino without good reason to.

Machina01 · 15/01/2022 14:53

Crazy that it’s only Harmony in Cork, no problem getting Panorama in Dublin.

Discuss the risks with your consultant, honestly though they should be more than able to get their hands on a Panorama kit, it’s not that difficult and it’s offered readily in Dublin. Try posting on Rollercoaster.ie too - someone might have found somewhere doing it in the south-west.

I’d want to know too so best of luck whatever you decide.

Machina01 · 15/01/2022 15:09

Found a clinic in Tralee offering Panorama - still a good rive but on the same side of the country at least

Machina01 · 15/01/2022 15:09

*drive

Grognonne · 15/01/2022 15:25

Mine didn’t work both times. I also gave up and went with the scan which looked fine (medical opinion not my own!!). All is perfect with the baby.

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 18:44

Thank you and glad all is looking good for you!
My initial thoughts were also no to the amnio but after a chat with my gp he said any risk was so minimal...but I know whst you are saying. I'm torn...

@Machina01 thank you so much for checking that out for me, I think ill give them a ring on Monday and see what they say, their website says harmony/panorama so i wonder if they offer both..

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 18:50

@Grognonne thank you and that's great news for you! Was the amnio suggested at all? I wonder why they have suggested it for me...I have my anatomy scan scheduled for 6 weeks time and I know I just can't wait until then...I honestly wish I skipped it entirely!

OP posts:
Bonnealle · 15/01/2022 18:51

No, nobody mentioned amnio at all. What reason did they give for suggesting it?

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 19:19

@Bonnealle It was suggested to me as 1 of 3 options as the harmony came inconclusive twice...very rarely multiple inconclusive tests due to low fetal fraction can indicate an issue

OP posts:
Bonnealle · 15/01/2022 19:55

I think it’s a bit off that they mentioned that. There are so many reasons it could come back as inconclusive. Have you spoken to your midwife/equivalent?

Tempusfudgeit · 15/01/2022 20:03

Gosh, I had a Harmony test done at 12 weeks with BMI of 40 and the results came back fine with a foetal fraction of 11%, iirc.

Journeylikenomother · 15/01/2022 20:04

I had an inconclusive harmony test at 13 weeks, was week 16 by the time I redid it and that came back. It does happen unfortunately

Bonnealle · 15/01/2022 20:22

Only saying that I think they’ve jumped the gun as I did it three times (bmi fine, but was on blood thinners), and it wasn’t mentioned. This was done by a paid for service so not NHS. After the third time I had already had the nhs scan and results were such a low percentage I decided to take the refund they offered. I know it’s such a worrying time, especially if you’ve had ivf, but I don’t think you should worry about the inconclusive results in themselves as there are so many reasons for it that aren’t related to any issues with the baby.

Woofwoofbarkbark · 15/01/2022 20:33

Can I ask why you want it done? If it comes back that your baby has some abnormalities are you looking to abort and try IVF again or do you just need to be in control from the start?
If you don't abort the fetus then is there any reason to know?

CliffsofMohair · 15/01/2022 20:38

@Jazzy06

Thank you for replying, I'm in ireland and all clinics seem to only offer the harmony, so it doesn't look like I have any other options unfortunately...so frustrating and stressful...
Panorama is available here - the Beacon in Dublin offer it as far as I remember

I hope it all turns out well for you x

Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 20:48

@Bonnealle that's actually reassuring so thank you. I also paid privately for it so I presume I can get a refund aswell if if don't go for a third draw...I honestly don't know what to do for the best. But seeing even on this thread it's not totally uncommon and maybe iv stressing myself out unnecessarily!

OP posts:
Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 20:51

@CliffsofMohair thank you so much yup it seems to be available in Dublin alright, I'm in Cork, but good to know about other options definitely!

OP posts:
Jazzy06 · 15/01/2022 20:53

@Woofwoofbarkbark ya I definitely want to know as early as possible, t13/t18 have such such high chance of late miscarriage etc I need to be prepared if this was a chance...
